Stay classy, Rocky Top.

This strikes me as incredibly pathetic:

The University of Tennessee Athletic Department today offered a statement from head football coach Lane Kiffin for fans critical of Phillip Fulmer being chosen to receive the 2009 Robert R. Neyland Award.

“Coach Fulmer has had a tremendous impact on Tennessee,” Kiffin said. “He’s the second- winningest coach in Tennessee history behind General Neyland. It’s only fitting that he receives this prestigious award. I hope all Tennessee fans will show up early Saturday to show their appreciation for all he has done for our program, our university and our state.”

I just can’t figure out the worse part here – that there are Vol fans pissed off enough to object to honoring a guy that’s won ‘em a MNC and a few conference titles, or that Fulmer’s being bailed out by Junior.

I’m not a Fulmer fan by any means, but that Orange and White Game should be one cringe-inducing experience this Saturday.

That’s what happens when you have 8 family reunions a year. You all begin to think your sh_t don’t stink.

Bad move by the UT PR department. Why call attention to the fan criticism this way?

We wouldn’t be any better if Richt went SEC Title less for as long as he did.

The Orange and White game, with a limited crowd seems an odd place to present this. Why not to a packed house against UCLA, or Florida? It also seems a little soon to me as the wounds are still bleeding. Almost like they either want to force closure between the different factions, or perhaps just want to get it over with so they can push him out the door. Either way, it appears awkward and spotlights the bitter feelings and dysfunctional supporters. Baby Kiffin playing peacemaker is pretty funny.

I will be attending this game on Saturday. Really looking forward to being in Neyland without either having to stand sideways, or sit on one cheek. Also hoping to see the topless coaching staff…..OK, actually hoping it carries over to the wives……OK, OK, perhaps just one of them.
