Ahem.
I suppose a little explanation is in order.
From its inception, Get the Picture has been a labor of love on my part. I didn’t start it and nurture it with the aim of it becoming a money making venture. And that hasn’t changed.
WordPress made it easy to stay pure. It’s the best of the basic (read: free) blogging platforms that I experimented with when I launched this blog and it didn’t allow for third party advertising to be promoted.
Until now, that is. WP introduced a beta program that allows certain bloggers to run AdSense ads on their sites. GTP qualified and I’ve decided to take a modest plunge.
It’s a pretty easy way to generate revenue and it’s hopefully not too obtrusive. If I find that it’s not meeting my expectations in either way, rest assured that I’ll take it down from my site.
I do hope this bit of commercialization doesn’t offend anyone too much. Please let me know if it’s a big problem for you.
Do you get commission from ad clicks? I use firefox + ad-blocker so I don’t notice anything different.
I do.
You do great work here and it’s more credible and worthwhile than most monetized blogs. Don’t apologize for making what will be a very small amount of change by adding something that isn’t even a minor inconvenience to your readers. It’s long overdue. Congrats.
make all the money you can!
I’m all for you receiving some kind of return for your efforts Senator… until AdSense starts picking up on the use of the word “Gators” and starts dropping links to gator websites and paraphernalia. Then I might get upset.
Perhaps a substitute word should be chosen in order to avoid triggering those links. “Filthy swamp hicks” sounds nice.
No offense, Rum Dawg, but I can’t see ads appealing to “filthy swamp hicks” as being that big of a step up. Perhaps you could refer to them as ‘our sexy lady friends.’ Less accurate, to be sure, but likely to be less visually problematic as well.
We can deal Senator.. a brotha’s gotta get paid every now and then.
It’s all about the Benjamins.
why should any of us begrudge you some ad money? I’m surprised it took you this long to decide to take the plunge.
Mazel tov. And, GATA (get after those ads).
It’s sad we live in a time where people have to apologize for trying to make money. Make that cash, Senator!
What are you selling? Cause I’m buyin’…
So, Senator, you sucked us in with timely, clever posts of interest to all rational Dawg fans, then, BOOM.
Well, WE WON’T GET FOOLED AGAIN!
[trite smiley face do-hickey here]
Capitalism in its purest form. More power to you.
Just don’t pull a Leather Helmet Blog on us (lexicon entry?)
Nothing short of you changing the header to a picture of Corch and Tebow would stop me from making GTP my first stop of the day. Thank you, Senator, for such a wonderful blog, and congrats on the revenue opportunity.
Is this the bloggers equivalent of a full scholy? Congratulations.
Yeah, but he walked on and earned it his senior year. I love this blog, and a few ads are not going to change that.
so do our clicks increase revenue for you? if so i’ll be clicking away…
Yes, and thanks.
You’re not going to get many – if any – complaints. You put in more time than almost all the bloggers except for maybe Hale, you deserve a bit of monetary reward.
“Despite a voluminous and often fervent literature on “income distribution,” the cold fact is that most income is not distributed: It is earned.”
Thomas Sowell
Go ahead on with your bad self……
Love Thomas Sowell.
Me too.

“It is earned.”
The old fashioned way. Like Salomon Smith Barney Morgan Stanley Citigroup.
“They make money the old fashioned way–they steal it!”
For God’s sake man where did you get such a hideous picture for a caption? Never mind, I don’t want to know. I just hope Jimmy Carter doesn’t see it. He’s apt to think that the 70′s are back in full force and mount a challenge to Obama in 12. After all there are some things worse than socialism and he is one of them. Remember Billy Beer? Despite the impending nightmares that are sure to come from Tarzanette and Jane, thanks for the great work on the premier football blog on the net.
Just don’t have those crazy ads that cover the content and make you have to figure out how to get rid of them.
Thanks for telling us . No apologies necessary. Doesn’t bother most folks one bit and Good Luck!!
Keep goin’ you bloviatin’ old ahole. And we all won’t be givin’ any candy. That’s a pretty daunting crowd above me that appear to know how to keep you on the straight. Now about that Lexicon………
SemperFi-Didn’t Pabst brew Billy Beer? I thought it was decent. Did you ever get a chance to try it?
Ain’t no thing man. Most other blogs have ads anyway. I doubt i wouldve even noticed (or cared) if you’d done it without saying anything
No problems from me, more power to you for getting a little extra coin in your pocket for doing something you love to do. Read you every night when I get to work.
I think you should use the money raised to help offset the disparity between Big 6 and non-Big 6 conferences- specifically the Mtn West. Show Hatch some love!
Do what you gotta do, just keep those posts coming!
Are you going to run into any intellectual property/copyright issues by going to profit motive?
Good question. Hopefully not. I try to be careful about what I post – I’ve only been asked to remove one item in three-plus years – and I will continue to do so.
Anyway, while my traffic is good for a regional college football blog, on the larger stage of the blogosphere, GTP is a blip.
You’ve got my blessing.
Only one problem. The first ad I to appear on your site was for North Avenue VoTech.
Ads are fine, but you need some standards.
Get. Yours.
May I offer a humble style suggestion? You might want to consider creating a signature type of end to your posts so that we can easily tell where your post has ended and the ad has started.
Excellent idea. Something like this?
Or if that’s too much of a reminder about Jennifer Anniston, this one?
