Close call

Bill Connelly goes back and tries to figure out what made the Georgia-Kentucky game such a blow-out, or, as he puts it, “(h)ow does a 13-point victory over an average team rank as one of the season’s best performances (and help to vault Georgia into last week’s Weighted S&P+ Top 10)?”

Basically, the answer is that Kentucky did virtually all its damage in garbage time.

The disparity in total yardage is misleading, UGA and KY had exactly the same yards per play. KY simply ran that many more plays (20+) due to UGA having more short fields. Little doubt UGA’s offense would have put up over 400+ if they had needed to. Like time of possession, this stat must be looked at “beneath the line”. As Paul Harvey would say, the “rest of the story” is often the better one.
