This is Grantham’s hire to make, like the OL hire in many ways was up to Mike Bobo. Richt will have a say, but it’s doubtful that Grantham wouldn’t get the coach he wants. (This, by the way, is an enormous difference from Alabama. Saban just hired a WR coach that went against what his offensive staff originally recommended, I’m told).
It’s different from how Georgia used to operate, as well. Richt didn’t delegate the Jancek hire to Martinez when he became the defensive coordinator (granted, both were in play because of VanGorder’s departure, but it’s not like Martinez was a stranger to the program) and the McClendon move wasn’t Bobo’s call.
Now we’re seeing more of an effort to let the coordinators structure their staffs. I don’t doubt that was something Grantham insisted on coming in and maybe Richt now feels that what’s good for one side of the ball is good for the other. Or maybe this is coming from McGarity. Either way, it’s not business as usual.

Since CMR is not a defensive coach, allowing TG to make the hire is okay with me. I do hope they interview someone though, unlike the OL hire. There ought to be at least 3 candidates for interviews.

You may very well be correct about UGA not interviewing anyone (re: OL hire). However, do you have any substantiation for that comment or are you just filling in the blanks? Just because Bobo hired Friend doesn’t mean they did not have other candidates or discussions/interviews. Fans are not entitled to be brought into the process on every aspect of the program, especially interview lists of position coach candidates that weren’t hired. Position coaches are obviously important, but they are a different profile level than HC or Coordinator and are lateral moves for coaches. Therefore, out of respect to the guys who were not chosen (so as to not inflame the fanbases at the schools they are currently at, scare the position players at their current school, recruits, etc.,), those details do not need to be made public. Again it is a lateral move, unlike a promo (HC, Coordinator or NFL) where people expect coaches to seek upward opportunties.

Agree, too many assumptions by those not involved in the process. No need for anyone to know who was considered, in what order, or why the final decision was made over others. Our fans need to be supportive even if their preference was not the candidate selected. I am pretty confident the merits of many coaches are discussed on an ongoing basis, just like they are in other businesses. When a vacancy occurs, the succession plan should already have narrowed the list of candidates allowing for a quick decision. None of us should have access to that, or be privy to how they evaluate different individuals.

Why would I give a crap about the effect someone being interviewed would have on the fan base of some OTHER school?
I want to know that we are out there beating the bushes to make sure we get the best hire possible.
If we interviewed other people, I want to know so I have some confidence that this wasn’t another incestuous hire of someone comfortable rather than someone potentially great.

Uhhhh….If you do not give those interviewed confidential treatment then nobody worth a damn will talk to you about the job. If they don’t get hired the fans of their current team will all be pissed off and they might. Get it now?

I am sure your level of confidence is something we should all be concerned about, especially CMR. Perhaps we should hire a new coach whose primary focus is to satisfy every irrational fan’s concerns about the way the program operates. That would probably allow them to concentrate on Job 1. You can probably name hundreds of public companies that discuss all hiring, interview, and disciplinary actions with sharehaolders….right?

Well, the public pronouncements are certainly presented in a different way….whether things are actually different, and, more importantly, whether if there is a difference things will change for the better we may not know for a while….at least, maybe, till about the middle of the second quarter or so against Boysee.
I have no idea what all these subtle cues point to, but, God help me, I am beginning to have, well……hope?

These two hires have been made difficult because of the repeated “Richt is on the Hot seat meme”. The Oline coach was brought in because he knows UGA’s scheme and will not try to reinvent the wheel. The D coach maybe a little tougher. I doubt an NFL coach that can stay in the NFL will take a job with us due to the uncertainty. CTG may have to rely on friendship for this one. Let’s hope he can get someone that is competent at both coaching and recruiting. For now the coaching is what is needed cause if 2011 doesn’t go well he might not get a chance to recruit.

This would be consistent with the McGarity/Richt pronouncement that they are going to get some “stuff” off of CMR’s plate and let him focus on new trends in X’s & O’s. I’ll bet he’s watching BSU film closely for more things than simple game planning.

McGarity isn’t personally involved in an assistant coaching search. It’s all Richt.

Martinez DIDN’T hire Jancek as you point out AND he didn’t want to keep a certain coach who was disruptive to the staff and knew he would undermine him as the DC.
It looks like Richt is finally allowing his people to make the calls they need to make to ensure success.

I believe the message is there is subtle change within the program, and with this hire being delegated to Grantham illustrates well. Personally, like this very much.

Belin was a terrific find, and had sec experience and cred. Like BVG, I wish more had been done to keep him. CTG really doesn’t have room on this hire, it has to be a good one.

jesus christmas, imagine what a full-grown and developed “head coach” would have done with the 2003, 2003, 2005 ,2007, 2008 teams. And just NOW he’s becoming a better HC and administrator?
he better reach his potential and well-roundedness real soon or he’ll be witnessing to pagan gods on easter island next season.
