The dumbassery, it burns.

Jeebus, fellas.

Georgia wide receiver Sanford Seay is expected to be dismissed from the team this morning, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Seay is accused of stealing money from another student in a university dorm room. It is believed that criminal charges will not be filed in the case.

Atlanta Fox 5 is also reporting that cornerback Nick Marshall will also be dismissed for the incident.

If a theft falls and no one gets charged with a crime, does it make a Fulmer Cup score?

********************************************************************************

UPDATE:  And then there were three.

Cornerback Nick Marshall, cornerback Chris Sanders and receiver Sanford Seay have been dismissed from Georgia’s football team for violating team rules.

“It’s a privilege to play college football and to be a part of this team and University,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a university release. “Along with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Mistakes were made and part of our job is helping them learn from mistakes. Going forward, we are committed to assisting them find opportunities where they can continue their education.”

So much for secondary depth this season.

For God’s sake… looks like every time Richt isn’t on the warpath against his players, they want to pull this kind of shit. Well, Richt, get back on the warpath. Scorch the earth. Kick these jerks off the team, and then kick off the guy who was sitting next to them in the team meeting just because you can.

  2. DawgPhan

I woke up thinking it was Keith Marshall, so…..

  3. Kennesawdawg

Fox 5 reporting Marshall is kicked off, too

  4. The ATH

Marshall had so much potential. That’s a real shame. Kid was athletic enough to get college attention for basketball and football – w/ opportunities to play QB (at tech), DB all over the place and even some Boykinish looks on O. Sad, sad sad.

    • Bevo

Agree. Sad for both of them, but I was really looking forward to seeing what Marshall could do on the field.

      • Bevo

        Chris Sanders is gone too.

Depth in the secondary takes a hit.

We are now net 16 players for the 2012 year. Hopefully we don’t go any lower. This is just one reason undersigning is irrational.

        • WH

More importantly, we’re now net -3 DB’s for the year, with S. Dawson in and DGD Boykin + 3 dummies out.

          • Puffdawg

What about the 4 defensive backs who entertained the NFL draft but decided to stay?

            • Bevo

I mentioned those guys earlier this morning in a post below when I said, “Thank Gawd the junior DBs came back.”

Having Rambo, Williams and Commings for another season was huge to begin with. Now, it’s the only thing preventing this from being an outright disaster. Who’s the fourth DB by the way?

            • Bevo

Oh yea, Branden Smith could’ve gone too.

    • Noonan

He had physical potential. Unfortunately, no one taught him the value of self-discipline or ethical behavior. Same old story.

  5. Doug

And they even had a cautionary tale about this a few months ago, when that recruit from Columbus got caught boosting cash and iPods from the players’ lockers!

Yeah, yeah, blah blah, “teenage kids don’t have great judgment” and all that, but seriously, this is beyond stupid even by 18-year-old standards. Whether charges were actually filed or not, if this is the most respect these assholes can show their own teammates, Richt should drop ‘em off at the Clarke County jail personally.

  6. Always Someone Else's Fault

And in other news, the coach at North Alabama just danced a little jig.

  7. I can tolerate emerging from alleys and even underage consumption. Those are indiscretions of immaturity. But, theft? This aggression will not stand, man.

  8. Ginny

Derek Dooley is already making phone calls.

  9. Darrron Rovelll

It is a shame that they apparently have blown their opportunity in Athens. Hopefully, they understand how lucky they are that charges will not be filed and they can move on productively.

  10. Irishdawg

God, what a waste. I’m not concerned, though.

I am glad there are still hobos in this world.

      Hoboing is a dying art.

      • Scott W.

Nothing beats the hobo life, stabbing folks with my hobo knife!

      • Normaltown Mike

You must not live in Athens.

The hobo population is thriving here.

        • AthensHomerDawg

If the surrounding counties would develop their own social services we wouldn’t be so overwhelmed here in Little Moscow on the Oconee. Living in a tent/plasic sheet isn’t exactly thriving though.

          • Normaltown Mike

I would draw a distinction b/w the Athens Hobo community and the Tent City residents. The Hobo’s are mostly college aged kids that come and go via the CSX yard at Homewood Village (I saw 2 girls this morning coming out of the gully towards Prince). They seem to be embracing an alternative lifestyle of wandering across the country.

Tent City (or Heidiville as I call it) appears to be home to the drug/alcohol addicts and mentally sick. The unofficial “Mayor” of Tent City was a married father of two living in Athens 20 years ago.

      • The Lone Stranger (aka Sam Elliot)

Ridin’ the rails is all good. I read an outstanding book a few years back, called strangely enough “HOBO”, that offers a sort of cultural history of said hobos of yore and even some contemporary drifters. I recommend it as it was really well written.

Strange that Tree was allowed to remain on the team when he was busted for the moped helmet theft incident. If I remember correctly charges were filed in that instance.

I do not condone stealing in anyway but I wonder why Richt is coming down so much harder in this case where charges were not filed?

    • For one thing, this incident evidently involves a teammate as the victim.

      • Jman781

Which is why I feel the team is better off without Marshall (or Seay) than with him. Anyone who would steal from a teammate would probably cause more harm than good on a team.

How big is that Sheldon Dawson commit now?

    • austintwo

IIRC, Tree’s “excuse” of mistaking the helmet for his based on similar look had at least some plausibility; after all, the “victim” didn’t report the “theft” for several months while Tree openly rode around campus wearing the helmet.

Different type of case to say the least.

(Please note: I may be mis-remembering.)

  12. PatinDC

Does that open two more scholarship slots?

  13. Comin' Down The Track

We’re just roster managing because of all that oversigning we do. It’s cool.

  14. Skeptic Dawg

On the bright side, at least we brought in a full recruiting class two days ago for this very reason! I mean really, who could have predicted a player or two being dismissed at some point prior to the season starting? Our HC is a friggin’ genius.

    • Puffdawg

Seriously, he only has like, the HIGHEST WINNING PERCENTAGE EVER BY A UGA COACH. We’re ranked in the top ten in the country in most 2012 preseason polls and in the top five in some. I hope we get rid of him soon. I can’t stand this ineptitude.

      • AthensHomerDawg

        Thankyou!

      • ben

Honestly, I don’t agree with Skeptic, but you can’t say that there isn’t some truth in there. That highest winning percentage in the league thing may be out the door if Saban has anything to say about it. I’m not saying I want Richt to act like Saban. I’m just saying when’s the last off season we DIDN’T see us lose a few players?

        • Puffdawg

          ben,

I am not questioning the fact we see attrition every year. I just take exception to the implication our head coach has handled it like a dumbass. Who cares what this recruiting class looks like if we win the next five SEC championships? Bashing the coaches for the quality or quantity of a class that has yet to step foot on campus is just bashing for the sake of bashing.

    • Puffdawg

P.S. The line to give hummers to Saban is over there.

    • ThePetis

I was so excited reading a Skeptic Dawg quote that started out saying “On the bright side”. I thought he had turned over a new leaf…

By the way, does anyone remember this….
“As many on this site know, I have been banging the “CMR IS DONE” drum for sometime now. I was not a believer. Until today. I was wrong. To CMR and to all that stood by him, I apologize. Great win for the Dawgs and the Dawg Nation. I will not doubt him again.
      Skeptic Dawg
In Search Of A New Handle”

      • AthensHomerDawg

        Oh! You ARE good sir.

        • Skeptic Dawg

As anyone can clearly read, I was not calling for a new HC. That train left the station with Puffdawg as the conductor. I did, and will continue to, fault him for not bringing in the full number of recruits.

          • South FL Dawg

Richt has said many times we only offer kids who can help us. For you it sounds like it’s about warm bodies. Way to stand your ground though.

          • Puffdawg

“I will not doubt him again.”

You are a dumbass with a keyboard.

          • W Cobb Dawg

Criticize Skeptic Dawg all you want, but he’s got a valid point. Off season attrition is a part of the job coaches have to deal with. To ignore the problem or act as if it doesn’t make a difference puts the team at a disadvantage.

    • Cojones

Born Again- Are you making waves again? Methinks you are not a Dawg as you protesteth falsely.

  15. AusDawg85

Cue AJC Headline writer using “Thuga” in 3…2…1…

By the way, I blame Bobo.

  16. Cojones

He who steals my purse, steals nothing. He who steals my good name st……wait a minute…..Poor Richard wasn’t in on this one. My bad.

Theft from others you live with never benefits the thief and only makes the victim feel insecure and stupid. Someone should have given a “blanket party” and then turned them in.

  17. Will Trane

Young men who play college football like many in society fail to see, to understand, and to seize opportunity when it is there for them. Unfortunately they make poor decisions that have long term impacts on their life. In most cases they lack inner discipline and motivation. College football is very demanding…you have to commit to the workouts, practice, field, study hall, and …keep your head in a book of study. Amazed how these guys do not see what a treasure sits there right in front of them at the University. Why steal, when there are people there who will go out of their way to help these guys.

It is a shame this happens at UGA or any other campus and program. Do not think there is a more committed man and coach than CMR to the development of each player on the football team, his staff, and the University at large. The man is unrelenting it making people better.

That means there are two more scholarships available. And as I have said before. Legions wait outside the gate to stand in the gap of the wall. Go find them CMR.

  18. WFdawg

Turns out Marshall was the Outlaw.

  19. charlottedawg

I’m going to go ahead and say it even if it’s unpopular: this is why you don’t undersign. You’re going to have attrition almost every year it just happens. You need a full or more than full class of recruits to backfill that space. in addition awarding a scholly to a walk on that doesn’t have a scholarship offer from a comparative school is a waste of a scholarship you could have had a recruit use that space. As an example use this year: Bama signs 27 guys we sign 19 assume equal talent levels. for these 2 classes to even out Bama would have to have 8 (27-19) guys contribute nothing and all 19 of our guys pan out.compound this over several years and add in the fact that Bama will let go of its underperformers and replace them with new blood and can you see how it would be almost impossible for UGA to keep up in the long term if we keep undersigning? Assuming attrition is equal UGA has to be that much better than say Bama at recruiting, identifying, and deploying talent just to stay even.

    • Puffdawg

If you ain’t oversiging, you undersigning. New meme established.

    • yurdle

You’re right about the advantage that Alabama gains from his signing philosophy. But they can keep it. That’s not how I want UGA to recruit.

    • when will reason prevail?

Forget oversigning for a minute. Can’t we just sign the amount that we had spots for? I’ll call this just “signing” (not over, not under). Going into Wednesday, we had 19 spots open. We could have signed up to 22 but chose to sign only 16. We left 3 spots open.

On top of that, we have spots being taken up by former walk-ons who were given scholarships last year when spots opened up and are getting to keep those scholarships for another year.

      • when will reason prevail

I apologize for my overuse of the word “spots” there but hopefully you get my drift. We left 3 scholarships open on Wednesday and we already have 4 walk-ons getting to keep their scholarships for another year. Are we running a charity or a major college football program?

    • Cojones

I hope we don’t have a plane crash with team members aboard. Richt will surely lose his job over that unforseen event. Cheez!!

  20. Irishdawg

“You must not live in Athens.

The hobo population is thriving here”

    For now, Mike. For now.

  21. dean

Not that it matters or justifies what these dumbasses did but I would like to know how much money was stolen. I’m guessing it wasn’t over 20K. Last time I checked that’s what annual cost of attendance was running at UGA.

  22. Alphadawg

We have a saying in the Marines. “There is only one thief in the Marine Corps, everyone else is just trying to get their gear back”. Thats why you also punish those who leave gear/valuable’s unsecure.

    • Cojones

That’s why you give blanket parties in an environment built on trust. The message is indelibly imprinted on their face as delivered from the rest of the trust. That prevents ever stealing back to replace lost goods.

  23. shane#1

Seay will hear about it when he gets home. His family moved from Camilla to Lee County to get him more playing time and to help his academics. LCHS is a very good school with no Justin Scott-Wesley. If I uproot my family for one of my kids and get him a free ride at a major university and he pulls this stunt! I would uproot his ass when I got my hands on him!

  24. Cojones

The upside? No Fulmer Cup points!
