I’m heading out the door, on my way to Athens.
I guess instead of keeping an eye on Malcolm Mitchell’s path to becoming the next Champ, I’ll have to settle for gauging the team’s secondary depth.
I’ll try to post during the game, if the broadband gods allow. Otherwise, consider this our game day thread.
Oh, and good luck to Hoppy on his mission in Great Falls.
Gameday FTW! Go Dawgs.
GATA! Go Dawgs!
So….like…..is Russ a redshirt sophomore or a true sophomore? Does he have the experience to handle his first game as UGA? (Yeah, I know it is not officially official till FAMU, but he knows about the promotion, right?
I don’t know, I just worry about the ink getting to him.
It gives me great pleasure to read that.
Skeptic Dawg Jr. (who is 7 and thinks Murray walks on water) and I are on our way. He is hunkered down in the backseat with his iPod and Athlon’s mag. This is the best time of the year. Hunker Down Dawgs!
I would wish you good luck against Bowling Green today but I wouldn’t mean it. You guys better get focused on TN for that game in knoxVegas in 2 weeks.
There you go Skeptic. Now get up at 3:00 AM and take the Juni snowboarding in NC come January/February, Be in the third base coach’s box when he hits his first homer, and tell him he’ll forget all about that first girl that ditched him when he kisses the lips of the next pretty girl and you’ll have this Dad stuff down cold.
When I was a kid, I used to wake up at 5:30 am Christmas morning ready for presents. Now I wake up at 5:30 am on UGA gameday. It’s finally here!
Go Dawgs!!!!!
great memories Skeptic-I remember heading with my Dad to see the opener in 65 against the defending Nat. Champs–my first game turned out to be a special one ! On the Dad thing-make sure you introduce him to a certain book-that will serve him forever ! Go Dawgs
Am I really seeing MM on crutches?
Please tell me that’s a smoke screen for MO.
Nice, Skeptic – y’all have fun.
Also…hooray!! We got FOOTBAWL, FOOTBAWL, FOOTBAWL, FOOTBAWL!!!!!!
Also, in these cupcake games I always have to beat down the urge to root for the opposing kids who are impossibly over-matched and doomed. Does anybody else find themselves with this bizarre affliction?
I’m with you there … but it appears the Bulls are not going to shrink here.
Andre Ware just said that Penn Wagers was one if the best in the SEC…
Yeah I caught that and almost spit out my drink.
Kenarious Gates looks pretty shaky on pass protection at left tackle. The Buffalo DE blew right by him on that first long pass from Murray in the first quarter. Luckily, Murray dodged the sack.
Similarly shaky rush blocking: David Andrews.
…and pass blocking now by Andrews!!!
The holding by Buffalo on the touchdown was egregious. Grabbing the back of jerseys and no call. I guess that is what you get when the announcers say that Penn Wagers is the best SEC ref. What a croc of crap.
+1
Was rediculous holding on Jordan Jenkins… Announcers didn’t mention it on any of the replays either… Weak
Far be it from me to ever go overboard,. but if Bill Bates is watching this game on ESPN 3, he’s having flashbacks
You can call me a “Gurley-man”.
My GOD a freshman!
Oh my God a Freshman!!
Pass coverage is pretty bad. First thing I see to work on this week.
The threat of a scrambling James Franklin is beginning to hit home here.
But, then, too that super-athletic play by Conley further boosts the great look of these Special Teams.
This bullshit is absolutely unacceptable.
…and that is exactly what Mizzourah will be riding next week — the simple, yet not always so simple, zone read option. The Dawgs looked largely clueless straight down the field.
94 yd Buffalo drive followed by a sack of Murray on a 3 man rush???
It’s gonna be a long damn year.
Yep, we suck balls. You must be the guy who sits next to me at every freaking game. I am gonna punch you in the throat at Columbia
This is the best comment I have seen since I got back from Athens tonight. What the hell is wrong with these folks who call themselves Dawg fans? The freakin world wasn’t supposed to end until Dec 2012. I guess according to these freakin doomsdayers, it ended today on the 2nd quarter drive by Buffalo. I started to punch the drunk ass students behind me today for cursing in front of my kids. I think they picked up on my stares cause the quit it quickly.
A lot of starters missing on defense….hope they get back for next week….kind of ugly right now.
I’ve gotta say Murray looks confused right now. Could be worth watching this 2nd half. But, damn does Barber look good.
I feel sick.
ILB play has been REALLY bad. Tentative and weak.
+1 … Almost all of the big-yardage plays have been broken QB scrambles up the middle or stuff to the TEs. (Well, and that zone-read option stuff on the huge 90-yd. drive). And Robinson is simply too slow.
Gilliard out of position several times, over pursuing. No depth for breathers out there. No excuses though–this is Buffalo, people.
Not impressed at all by our work in this game.
Remember how people could not imagine 17 points from Buffalo? Phil Steele has a magic computer.
I’m pretty sure Mark Richt almost cussed during that interview on his way in to the locker room. He’s not happy. Hopefully this will translate to a very different second half.
This is what happens when you come in unprepared and unmotivated. CMR better lay into these guys at half before this becomes ASU-Michigan.
I can’t believe how flat the def is playing. And Murray is uninspired. Def played one down with 10 men on the field. Grant Ham usually brings a fire. He better let it out at the half. And that white free safety , I forget his name, needs to sit. Wtf
Hey folks…don’t worry…it is all a trick, we are lulling Moo U to sleep, they will start worrying about Tennessee….In Grantham I trust. This is a great defense, we just don’t want anybody to know.
I really hope you’re right because those huge QB runs are making me very concerned about Mizzou.
Trust me, that was sarcasm.
and now, we have to win the game in the second half….
That is some Jim Jones Kool Aid right there. Are you for real? No one plans that. I hope for better next week, but this was not good.
I’m glad I reserved my confidence this year. We look terrible. The punt was impressive. And Gurley’s legit. But that’s all I’m taking away from this. And apparently, Ogletree and Rambo will be missing next week, too. Awesome.
The absence of Tree is the main reason the middle looks so soft today, IMO.
I’d agree — I think the defense looks much more solid next week, but that ain’t going to improve the Center and some of Murray’s still apparent jitter problems.
Well then, strike that first part if Turd’s info is legit.
The SEC Network broadcast had an info-graphic that listed Rambo’s suspension as a solid 4 games and Ogletree’s as 2-4 games. Hope they’re wrong, but I assume they’ve got reliable sources.
As I type that, though, I see that Richt’s response was “We’ll find out next week” when asked about Rambo and Ogletree’s suspension. So who the hell knows, I guess.
Why is he being so evasive about this?
My guess is that if the team stops publicly announcing suspensions, then there is no news story appearing in every newspaper about all of the arrests and off the field troubles. Sounds like a good policy to me.
Perhaps he would rather not tell next week’s opponent who is playing and who isn’t.
Doesn’t want Mizzou to know if they’re playing or not. I guess if they knew that Connor Norman would be starting at safety and not Rambo, their gameplancould be “find #11 and throw to where he’s supposedto be but won’t be.”
The D has got to play better than this. 150 yards rushing at the half. Uggh?
If we play like this next we’ll get blown out of the stadium.
Also, consider that the Buffalo QB never showed the running aspect of his game, so I don’t think they expected it at all. I fully expect Grantham to light a fire under the collective ass of the D and they’ll come out inspired in the second half.
I agree..the F-Bomb is coming out of Grantham’s mouth as we speak.
Murray looks horrible. O-Line looks horrible. Linebackers look slow. Maybe the second half we will wake up.
Murray’s passes are too high. He is a streaky QB. Its going to be tough to run the table with a QB who can be so hot/cold at times.
Def. some problems on O-Line.
D has looked much stouter here in the 2nd half. I definitely would not have wanted to be on the receiving end of the tongue lashing they got from Grantham during halftime.
But the QB is still taking the runs that he wants. This quarterback next week in MO is 5x the athlete that the plucky Zordich is. This is my concern, Dude.
Very worried about us defending the zone read. Very
Why aren’t we running Gurley? Marshall doesn’t compare. Give the ball to Gurley every play and we’d have 70 points by now.
See??? WTF Bobo. Give it to him every play.
Gurley is the bright spot today. Second half defense much better. Very concerned about theus’ injury.
Did anyone see if brunette came back. I think I saw him later but not sure.
He did not return as far as I am aware.
He did return.
Buffalo has gotten away with a lot of holding in the game…the worst being the hold on their first TD.
Damn straight. That only excuses a little though.
It’s also against the rules to push Jarvis down from behind just because he’s got ya beat. But that NEVER got called. It happened over and over too.
GURLEY -So nice to have a RB that hits the hole hard, runs north/south with speed, and does fall down at first contact.
Yeah, we haven’t had that since last year.
Who was that?
Karempelis?
Michael Bennett is underrated. He is clutch.
I think that it’s pretty safe to say that Todd Gurley will be SEC Freshman of the Week…and very much in the conversation for Offensive Player of the Week
Ya think?
First 10 college touches: 227 yards, three touchdowns.
You forgot one stat: zero mentions on ESPN.
In fairness, it was Buffalo. And all the offseason budget went into Lil Nicky’s clinical de-pantsing of Michigan.
I’m sorry, I’m usually a pretty positive guy, but that was a piss poor performance from a team that is talking about making a run at the SEC championship. I know I saw alot of holding that wasn’t called, but if the defense can’t perform better than this, we won’t even win the SEC east.
Yeah, if we play the rest of the way like we did today I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost at least three out of south carolina, florida, tennessee, and missouri. We’ve got to get our act together.
I don’t want to make too much out of one game but yeah that was awful. I really hope it’s just a hiccup not a sign of things to come.
Defense looked slow. Gurley is a beast.
Issues.
1. O-Line. Buffalo had several sacks and too many tackles for loss. Andrews and Gates burned a few times.
2. I have my doubts about Kenarious Gates at Left Tackle. He is still a Guard to me. Doesn’t seem quick enough to defend the pass rush off the edge. If he can’t stop the Buffalo DE from running around him, just wait till he lines up against lightning quick SEC defensive ends.
3. Murray inaccurate in first half and he still holds on to ball too long contributing to sacks.
4. Buffalo QB scrambled repeatedly for big yards against our defense. TE for Buffalo had his way with our D.
5. We gave up some big plays. For a great D, we gave up 45 big plays last season, and Buffalo had quite a few today. Obviously, second half was a different story. But the game is 4 quarters.
As a whole the team looked uninspired. Exceptions were the tailbacks, receivers, and secondary.
And Garrison Smith and Jarvis Jones…..
Well I don’t believe that this wasn’t more than a glorified scrimmage. One where coaches and game plans were all about repping plays and rehearsing for Mizzou. Hard to get those kids up each and every Saturday. It was splochy and not at all a heavy dose of Dawg Entertainment. That being said ….. I’ll reserve judgement until we play an SEC team. See you at The Zoo. That one counts.
It’s certainly not the first time in the Richt era that we have played like this against a cupcake. I remember squeaking by UAB 16-13 in 2003, a season where we played in the SEC title game. We also had a stinker against Georgia Southern and another against MTSU in seasons where we ended up winning 10 games.
Remember the vast improvement between week one and week two last year? Let’s hope history repeats itself (other than the outcome of week two).
True. Glorified scrimmage was what it was. Denard Robinson is wishing that’s what he had
Gators up 17-14 in a battle late against Bowling Green. But BG has ball in red zone with 2 minutes to play.
2 min to play in 3rd Q. BG has missed 2 short field goals.
Mark Richt has lost control of the Bowling Green place kicker.
As bad as Georgia looked in the first half (should have run the ball a lot more), Florida looks horrible.
I think Georgia found firmer footing in the second half.
A lot of Buffalo’s success in the first half was due to holding. When they showed Pen Wagers face I almost puked. They did let Georgia get away with some holds also.
Honestly…..TG and CMR worked very hard not to show too much.
I was really, really impressed with the lack of penalties.
Todd Gurley is the stud we’ve been looking for.
I would like to see Georgia more inspired.
Still, this is a good team…..I think a very good team.
The leaders of the SEC East Div haven’t lived up to their hype in their first games. Opening Day jitters?
Anyone know about the injury list?
Now I know we’re in trouble. Cojones is having doubts…;)
Seth Emerson has an injury report posted, btw. Not great news.
At first I felt kind of bad about our 22 point win today, but after reflecting on South Carolina’s game and seeing Florida’s game, I realize that things could be a whole lot worse. That Year of the Quarterback meme sure didn’t last long.
Also, my Fabris Invitational picks are effed.
Well said……..I feel a LOT better than either Florida or USCe right now…..Even Tennessee wasn’t quite as good as I think everyone is making it out to be (sustained drives missing).
But then you watch Bama play and feel awful again.
+1
Is that team Bama is playing a Division 1 school?
Unfortunately, Vandy is a heckuva lot better than Buffalo and we are supposed to be a heckuva lot better than Florida.
Bama is very, very good. They look to be in mid-season form. I think Michigan is part of the reason…..they aren’t physical enough. Alabama’s just throwing them around.
Who’s watching LSU? Auburn?
Flippin back n forth, watching Bama makes me wish we had half that team
Listened to the call in show on the way back. According to Kevin Butler we kept everything vanilla on O and D.
We definitely did. Very boring D and the offense may’ve run a dozen or so plays. All we showed was that we’ll run lots of no-huddle.
I saw Murray’s post-game interview and read a few articles… Apparently we had 0 film on these guys that could really help us. All new staff doing all new stuff. Saw somewhere that we didnt even know they would run the QB. Hard to look good with those 2 things working against you. The suspensions (and *sigh* injuries) only exacerbated things.
we have serious problems. i dont know they are but we really should have played better and covered the spread
I know how much y’all enjoyed seeing the Cocks struggle against Vandy (a well-coached team that went to a bowl in 2011). But after seeing y’all go up against Buffalo (3-9 in 2011), it is an absolute crying shame that South Carolina doesn’t play Georgia next week.
Shoo, fly.
