Draft mor juniorz.

A few random observations about last night’s Chick-fil-A Bowl:

  1. Um, with Georgia’s September 2013 schedule in mind, let me just say that I saw a number of third-year players on both teams who looked NFL-ready.  Don’t be afraid to climb those golden stairs now, fellas!
  2. There’s no way Georgia’s defense will hold up in the September heat letting Clemson run 100 offensive plays.
  3. Which means Georgia’s offense had better avoid eight three-and-out possessions.
  4. After watching Southern Cal’s complete lack of interest in playing its bowl game, it was a pleasure to see two top-fifteen schools giving it their all for sixty minutes.
  5. Once again, the SEC’s fifth-best plays the ACC’s second-best no worse than evenly.  Sounds about right.
  6. Zach Mettenberger, 5.2 yards per pass attempt; Jeremy Hill, 10.3 yards per carry.  It just goes to show that you’re never out of it late in a tight game with Les Miles.

  1. Clemmers talking about “national championships” with Georgia on the schedule next year. That never really works well for them.

In the give credit where it’s due dept, I was most impressed with Boyd last night. He willed them to the win. He took a BEATING last night and kept on keepin on. Why would any QB (looking at the record setting kid from GA) want to go play in a system where they run the ball 30 times against LSU? Miracle he didn’t get hurt. My hat’s off to him.

Why did LSU run 2 pass plays on 2nd and 3rd and 2 with less than 2 mins to go? A first down there and the game is over with an LSU victory. The one thing the LSU offense does well is power running. The one thing they do poorly, pass, esp in critical situations. Made no sense. They gave that game away. If I were an LSU fan, Im pissed at the OC / HC today.

Even if unsuccessful, running plays allow the clock to run down / make Clemson take time outs. SMH (shakin my head).

I thought it was a great play call on 2nd/2 YTG…Mett missed his target in the flat badly, almost so much so that his 2nd read could have caught it. Lost his mechanics on the rollout. Now, to come back and throw again on 3rd was a bit mind-bottling.

But that play pass off left tackle on 2nd down was open — Mettenberger simply missed the guy.

If you have watched LSU play this year, any pass play is of limited probability to be successful. That is an easy throw for Murray but not for Mettenberger. LSU fans know that and their coaches should also. I think LSU’s RB was averaging 10 yards per carry in the second half. LSU’s front seven / RB can’t move the chains on 2nd and 2? LSU was lucky that Mett didn’t throw a pick 6 the way their passing game has gone this year.

And yet again the game swings on the vicissitudes of the Official’s flags. I thought some of the PI no-calls & calls to be capricious and arbitrary.

  5. Always Someone Else's Fault

Les turned it into a contest to see who had the better QB. Smart.

LSU coulda/shoulda had 250 yards on the ground last night, with Boyd watching from the bench. Just dumb.

An overconfident SEC team got their just desserts last night. Miles’ late game play calling really boggles the mind, but it is nothing new. Against Bama he went overly conservative. Not sure what you call not being able to force at least one Clemson time out with under 3 minutes to play. Oh yeah…stupid comes to mind.

It could easily happen today if too many SEC teams buy into the notion that they are the second coming the NFC Central. College football is a game of emotion….ask USC about that.

BTW, where are all the folks who swore that Mettenberger was better than Aaron??? What a joke.

Those Mettenberger fans are still around. They are the ones who spent the first half of the season swearing Mason is better than Murray. Strangely, they all seem to be enjoying a steaming hot cup of ShutTheHellUp lately, and that’s just fine with me.

If Murray stays, our offense will be light years ahead of LSU’s last night. It may be a shootout, but I’m not worried about the offense in that game.

That said, I hope Hopkins goes pro because I think Sammy Watkins is a sophomore.
