It all depends on your point of view.

About the uptick in offense in the SEC so far, Steve Spurrier says po-tay-to (“The more you look at it the more you see that the offenses are difficult to stop. They really are…”) and Nick Saban (“who suggested the SEC might lack the same number of ‘dominant defensive players’ as in the recent past”) says po-tah-to.

SOS is right…just look at those QBR’s!

obviously, one causes the other. if you had better defenders, the QBRs would be lower. Honestly, I don’t really know what to make of things. If we look at the three teams that have played consistently great defense over the past 5 years, UF is the only one that appears in tact, but they have not been tested. As an aside, despite heavy losses a year ago, UF’s defense has a great mix of veterans and young guys.

Ultimately, I would love to calculate the numbers to see if it was due to over signing or a higher hit rate or both, but both Bama and LSU appear to have exited a stage where they produced an extraordinary number of great defensive players. Is it possible that this most recent wave of 4 and 5 stars that Saban has recruited are simply not as good as the ones earlier. Is it possible that his own team colored his remarks to the question? Human nature would say yes….I would love if he had been asked that follow up question.

To your point, I am wondering if the class size restrictions are finally having some impact on LSU and Alabama. They do restrict the amount of roster management that can be done.

I was just talking about this very thing with some coworkers this morning. I think that with the restrictions on oversigning the SEC West is finally coming back to the rest of the field. Amazing how equal things get when you don’t get an extra signing class over the course of 4 years

          • Now Little Nicky ain’t doin nothin different than he has since he arrived in Tuscaloosa Alabama. At least that any one knows….or can prove. Ahh the burden of proof. Johnny WHO?

  2. Well, we say po-ta-toe at GEORGIA. Maybe we should say it the way Little Nicky does.
