Georgia, North Texas, yoots and the spread

Between the weather, the opponent, the desire to get the starters out as soon as possible… well, I won’t be surprised if Georgia doesn’t cover today.  And that may not be such a bad thing, if it’s mainly about getting a bunch of fresh faces some real work in a game, particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

There might be a temptation to use Saturday’s game against unheralded North Texas as the warm-up game that Georgia didn’t get prior to facing Clemson and South Carolina. And Georgia could yet use it that way, but there was no way the Bulldogs were going to admit that publicly.

Still, with another mega-matchup looming next week against No. 6 LSU, the ninth-ranked Bulldogs are hoping to take control early against North Texas and save some key players from further injury risk.

If that happens, a number of younger and inexperienced players will get an extended look.

Turnover margin is the one thing I worry about going in, but if the Dawgs can avoid being sloppy, take control of the game early on and cruise playing a bunch of backups, I’ll live if they don’t win by thirty.

Consider this your game day thread invitation, those of you staying dry.

Thanks. My Cousin Vinny brings a smile to start the day.

  2. Scorpio Jones, III

I have given up the stupid habit of watching the WWl before the game, I try to watch two or three episodes of Friday Night Lights instead….always leaves my eyes clear and my heart full.

  3. Rp

Hope the field isn’t too soggy. Most important stat today is 0 injuries.

    • tess

      Amen to that.

It doesn’t look as though there was much rain last night, if at all (we’re about a block from Butts-Mehre), and the forecast shows the rain possibly not coming in until nearly 3pm. Days like today make me wish this wasn’t a tv game–remember how quickly those radio-only 1pm games were? sigh…

  4. NRBQ

Will the rain be a killer for Murray’s QBR?

  5. mg4life0331

“UNT has lost a couple of guys so far to season-ending injuries in deep-snapper Blake Dunham”

Got this off the dawgbone, Why am I first to point out the lack of a great long snappah?

  6. Noonan

Watching Tech. We might score 100 on them.

  7. I would do anything to get Ramik on the bench. Can the Athens cops help with this somehow? Most passive inside backer I’ve ever seen.

    • Hogbody Spradlin

I thought he was pretty aggressive on the face mask.

      • I see what you did there… and I like it.

But seriously, he had that dude 1 on 1 and then hesitated, got beat, then “recovered” by grabbing plastic. He’s a liability and LSU is going to pick on him all day in the run game. Also, he cannot get off a block. If you can’t tell, I’m not high on Ramik.

  8. mg4life0331

    Good catch Reggie

  9. The Lone Stranger

Great catch, Reggie! I’ve seen Dawgs more seasoned than Davis drop skinny posts with naught but green in front of them. Also, a nice confluence of Murray’s 100th TD toss with the longest UGa completion in footballing history.

  10. RP

    AM: 30 ypa. Decent.

    • Dawgfan Will

I love Murray, but I refuse to say anything nice about him in this game after that pick on the first series.

  11. Do any of you blog-posters play defense? Because we have 11 open spots that need to be filled.

  12. dudetheplayer

I guess no matter how many times you tell them, 18-23 year old guys sometimes just refuse to listen.

Same issues with this team. Poor tackling, bad LB and secondary play, and an absurd special teams gaffe. Need to get this shit cleaned up.

  13. Nashville West

I sure hope that they’re looking past North Texas to LSU, otherwise its going to be a long day next Saturday

  14. Hogbody Spradlin

The Reggie Davis TD pass broke the record for our longest TD pass ever. The previous record was 93 yards. If that number don’t ring a bell, turn in your vienna sausage.

    • The Lone Stranger

Ahh … Interesting. So it knocked out the Pass That Lives in Lore-’80 Edition! That was NOT mentioned in the broadcast on the local over-the-air channel up here in the hinterlands. But the SEC Network has limited resources after all.

  15. Dolly Llama

So much for playing Hutson and the second string. Wish I’d have taken North Texas and the points.

    • Hutson would never have thrown that pick! He would have 400 yards passing and 200 rushing already! And a Heisman!

      • Forget playing Mason. Can we re-suspend Morgan and get the walkon guy back? Can he not kick it into the end zone or is this more of that directional kicking crap? This game is painful to listen to. Andre Ware is apparently trying out to be the Mean Green announcer. They have 14 of their points off special teams eff ups and he actually says that NT’s offense is moving the ball all game.

  16. cube

Amazing. Richt doesn’t even realize he butchered clock management at the end of the half. Some things never change.

    • The Lone Stranger

How do you figure that? Dawgs only had 2 TOs left and would have had no time on the clock if they had run it out any other way.

      • cube

Were you asleep? He waited to use the first of the two timeouts and burned a lot of clock in the process. We could have used that time to run a couple of offensive plays once we got the ball back.

  17. NRBQ

Well that ending was a clusterfuck of Milesian proportions.

And Bobo is gonna Bobo. Passing is wide open, with zero incompletions, 274 yards and a ridiculous 21 per attempt, yet he leans on the run in the second quarter.

  18. Chuck

    When did Fabris come back?

  19. Hogbody Spradlin

Boy, we got us a blog full of experts here to-day. Relax and enjoy the game you young whippersnappers.

  20. The Lone Stranger

… and here come the showers — a little edgey for the 2nd Half now.

  21. The Lone Stranger

I always consider mucky weather to be an equalizer.

  22. The Lone Stranger

… and I think weather has claimed it’s first casualty on the AM out pass! And now a Hold! Damnedy damn.

  23. Dolly Llama

OK, now. Are we headed for an App State-defeats-Michigan moment?

  24. The Lone Stranger

Consider the game Equalized. And the notorious specialty teams exposed. Aye-yay-yay.

  25. Rain+Penn effing Wagers+special teams eff ups=a game that the backups should be in now tied.

  26. Can we just pull a Saban and cut Morgan for some fake injury? I put that KO return on him and frankly trust the walkon guy more on FGs than him at this point.

  27. Nashville West

Anyone else feel the need to turn the sound off? How did we get North Texas homers on the SEC Network?

    • +1000. You’d think they hadn’t scored 2/3 of their points on our crappy special teams.

      • NRBQ

I’m watching on the computer and listening to the Dawgs radio broadcast.

The delay is annoying, but anything’s better than that dumbass Ware.

IIRC, he predicted Hawaii would spank UGA in the Sugar Bowl.

  28. And Andre Ware is a horrible announcer. C’mon SEC network. You’re at old Jefferson Pilot production standards.

    • uglydawg

Andre is the announcer who proclaimed Driskell as the best QB in the SEC last year.
      N. Tex is game, but this game should not be this close. Penn Wagers believes calling holding against Georgia’s opposition is a mortal sin. Several blocks in the back on the kickoff return..but Georgia is not playing as hard as they shuld. I also think Marshall may be the third running back..he goes down too easy.

  29. Scorpio Jones, III

Nobody listens….this is a pretty good football team.

    • uglydawg

Scorp…I believed it…but it should have been over early. Give NT credit, but Georgia doesn’t look like a championship team today.
Georgia is loaded with talent…young talent…

      • Scorpio Jones, III

Two FU’s on special teams will do that for you. Defense given up what?
        14 points?

      • Rebar

+100, this, we are young; but we will see how much we grow through this season. No one should expect a green defense to be a shut down defense, and props to North Texas State, that was a damn good team, played disciplined and tackled well in space.

  30. Hogbody Spradlin

Chris Conley is our expert on tipped passes.

    • Scorpio Jones, III

Yep…the better athletes are beginning to get more interested…blocked punt may have woke somebody up.

  31. This team does NOT need a Special Teams coach(sarcasm)!

  32. Scorpio Jones, III

-11 or so yards rushing for them…terrible defense (sarcasm meter pegs)

  33. AthensHomerDawg

Meh…. here is where we pull away.

  34. Scorpio Jones, III

Man, their LB’s really move to the ball.

  35. Hopefully playing this sloppy a game will get these players and coaches heads out of their asses for the LSU game.

  36. TennesseeDawg

Dallas Lee has replaced Gates as the new turnstile

  37. Scorpio Jones, III

Here comes the Great White Beast :)

  38. Russ

Can we get N. Texas to show our guys how to tackle? They really wrap up well.

  39. Scorpio Jones, III

Ok, lets get this mess over….I gotta pull for my Vols!!!!! (for a quarter or so, anyway :))

  40. Scorpio Jones, III

Man…we have really got some talent….young, but really talented…like somebody once said about a running back, “If they ever learn the plays they are really gonna be something.”

  41. Chuck

Reckon Greg could take some of that $3M surplus and buy some in-stadium electronics that work. Embarrassing.

  42. Driskell’s on crutches and the Vowels are up 7-0.

  43. RP

Let’s try to remain positive. 7 yds rushing. Good pressure on the qb. AM could choose his throws all day. They really sold out on the run.

Didn’t notice anything else. The rest was perfect :)

  44. Billy Mumphrey

I know it is obvious, but if Hutson Mason is on the field he not only catches the kick returner from behind to save the TD but also delivers a better snap on the blocked punt. Fire Mark Richt!!!

    • Ausdawg85

He only needed two plays to score too! Imagine if HE had, started, the, game? I won’t link to the stats since this is original journalistic thoughts and I’m too important studying for my Masters in blog snark.

  45. Nerd

Special teams pathetic again. What a fucking joke it is. Sloppy ass as usual. It don’t look good against LSU.

  46. Russ

I’m really enjoying the meteor game. Those are two wretched teams except for UF’s defense. The derp is strong in this game.

  47. uglydawg

Tennessee’s run defense is a little better than I thought it would be, but that could be because the Gators suck. Driskell going down might actually benefit Fl…Murphy looks better by a good bit.

  48. Russ

While it’s funny that Arkansas lost to Rutgers, they’re making the SEC look bad.

  49. watcher16

Just got back from the game. Stayed the whole time even with my soaked socks. Few observations:

-Really impressed with the number of fans there, given the opponent and weather.
-I haven’t seen a team tackle as well as N. Texas in a long time. Very disciplined team and give them credit.
-N. Texas sold out to stop the run and Gurley still almost got his 100 yards. Very tough yards after contact!
-Could have been a few more INTs if we were playing a better team. Some of those passes barely got by defenders.
-Defense only gave up 7 points! Much improved.

That’s all I got for now. Time to watch ASU-Stan and Aub-LSU!

    • Debby Balcer

The students stayed even with the rain!!!

    • Will (the other one)

Run D was much improved. Sure, maybe not a good opponent, but compared to giving up 200 yards on the ground to Buffalo and Kentucky last year, I’ll take it as a good sign.
Floyd and Harvey-Clemons are going to be very good.

  50. Boz

Our special teams play is so bad, Lou Holtz proclaimed Fabris’ unit as the best in the SEC
