My Mumme Poll ballot, Week 9

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Oklahoma
  • Penn State
  • Texas

  • Boise State
  • Georgia
  • Missouri
  • Oklahoma State
  • Southern California
  • Texas Tech
  • Utah

  • The only tough call for me was at #12.  In the end, I like Boise’s win against Oregon over anything Ohio State’s done so far.
  • Florida’s resume strikes me as a tiny bit better than Georgia’s and Southern Cal’s right now.  The Gators’ loss was due to sloppiness with the ball;  the Dawgs and Trojans simply got dominated, at least for a half, in their losses.  That, of course, will not matter after Saturday, I hope.
  • LSU, you’re dead to me now.
  • I don’t think that Texas Tech’s win over Kansas was as big as a lot of folks make out – the Jayhawk defense looked flat out awful – but I don’t feel bad about including Leach’s crew in the dirty dozen this week.  Now if they beat Texas, that will make things interesting composing a ballot next week.
  • No school from the ACC or the Big East even crossed my mind in putting this ballot together.

I agree with you about the ACC and Big East, although there are a couple of teams coming up in the rear view mirror that may make my Top 12 as big match ups continue. I struggle more with Oklahoma due to defnsive struggles. My gut tells me they are Top 5, but I keep seeing teams move the ball up and down the field on them (of course I have that same concern about Texas and Texas Tech but they have both managed to outscore everyone thus far.)

I also have trouble justifying USC as Top 5 despite their talent. Just cannot get the taste of them losing to Oregon State, and not in a flukey way…. they got gashed by a freshman running back all night. Then USC goes to play a decent Arizona team knowing they need to play well to keep themselves up in the polls, and they play very close. There just isn’t many chances left for USC to impress and they blew this one. The Ohio State win was their one notable win and that continues to get diminished. I have trouble seeing them moving back into the Top 5 based on anything they do, it will have to be others stumbling.

USC dropped from my Top 5 this week as well. The Gators have been playing to well to not jump over the Trojans in my book. The Trojans are too inconsistent on offense and I no longer think they would win head to head with Florida as I did a few weeks ago.

I finally gave Texas Tech some love by moving them into the Top 12. They can prove they deserve to stay this week against Texas. I did struggle slightly with whether or not to leave Mizzou in the Top 12 with two losses but finally decided to nudge TCU ahead of them whose only lose is to Oklahoma. For me the number of teams to consider for the Top 12 keeps shrinking each week.

loss…not “only lose is to Oklahoma.”

USC was remarkably lucky Saturday night. A potential late scoring drive by Arizona ends after being stopped on 4th and millimeters. Then USC fumbles within its own 10 yard line for a 36 yard gain.
