Cue the butt flying monkeys

I have to admit this move floors me:  Al Groh, whose main goal in life seems to be to produce ever more boring and ineffective offenses in every succeeding year has just hired former Bowling Green head coach Gregg Brandon as his new offensive coordinator.

That’s the Gregg Brandon who served as Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator in Meyer’s first two seasons as a head coach.  He’s a big time spread guy.  He was in the rumor mix as possibly going to Florida as a replacement for the recently departed Dan Mullen.

I have no idea what’s gotten into Groh.  It’s reminiscent of Tuberville’s Tony Franklin move.  It will be interesting to see how much autonomy Brandon has in running the offense, that’s for sure.

Almost seems like a semi-lateral move. Head coach at a non-BCS school to OC at a 2nd class ACC program.

Maybe the good news for us is that Brandon will not be coming to Florida.

The bad news for Groh and UVA fans is that not only is it reminiscent of Tuberville-Franklin, it will probably be exactly like it. Except it may take Groh longer than a half a season to fire a spread OC and longer than one season for UVA to run off Groh. I hope that Groh negotiated his contract extension before he made this hire

The potential bad news for us may be the next OC for UF whose fan base is not going to miss Mullen as OC at all. They wanted his head on a pole after the Ole Miss loss. Their reaction down here to Mullen being hired away is similar to the FSU fans’ reaction when Adams made Dooley hire Richt. Most were ecstatic to see Richt go until it dawned on them that he was going to replaced as FSU OC by Jeff Bowden. Although I wish he would, I don’t think Meyer will come anywhere close to making as bad a hire as sucessor OC. With the UF cupcake 2009 schedule, maybe they’ll hire Tony Franklin.
