Uncanny

You know, I read this story

Though he never mentions Matthews by name, Meyer said at a recent Gator club meeting, “If you want to be critical of a player on our team or a coach on our team you can buy a ticket for seat 37F, you’re not welcome back in the football office. You’re either a Gator or you’re not a Gator.”

Does Meyer really have the right to control what former players say, especially those in the media who have a job to do? He seems to think so…

and it suddenly dawns on me that if they ever make Urban Meyer – The Movie, I know who to cast in the lead role.

The Gators were competely enamored with themselves in the 70’s and 80’s – when they continuously tripped over their own jocks.

Spurrier and his winning ways took this to new heights in the 90’s. All the smack-talk from the prior two decades seemed justified, and boy did it escalate from there.

Now we have a man who, rightfully so, is proud of his accomplishments. Who wouldn’t be? But Meyer’s is beginning to sound like a true megalomaniac. And that is not a compliment.

All I can say is beware Gator. Pride cometh before the fall. And when you’re down, and you will be again, the pounding and kicking and stabbing and the bleeding will be warranted.

  2. I suppose Urban Meyer and Dick Cheney are good pals. You criticize Meyer and you’re no longer a Gator. You criticize Cheney and you’re un-American. Funny how that works.

I believe that applies with Obama too. Selective memory, eh? If I remember correctly disagreeing with a higher tax rate was called un-American too. Let’s not start this Audit and keep it on football.

      • Dude, I don’t know what it is with people but anytime a jab is taken at a politician there is assumed bias. Let me tell you, I voted for Bush/Cheney twice and voted for Ron Paul in the last election. I’m not taking sides, just making an observation. I was making a snide comment and you took it the wrong way. I am so freaking sick of everyone getting their panties in a wad whenever “their guy” gets fairly criticized. Jeez.

          Agree 100%.

I remember the sh!t that others take and the Senator took some time ago at the start of the Lane comedy era when he commented that perhaps, maybe, just a little bit a parallel could be drawn between Lane and W. on the fact that neither would have gotten where they were without their Daddy and then, after getting there, having no clue whatsoever about how to do their jobs.

Know this is not a political board but as long as the comedy of politics can be meshed or even jammed together with the comedy of sports, why not?

Example: Five Deferment Chickenhawk Cheney’s has never been through SERE training or even sniffed it. It’s a By God insult and disgrace to those who have to have he and his freaking daughter use that as a justification for torture. If any SERE trainer had done one tenth of the sh!t set out the Red Cross Torture Reports, they would have been court-martialed, convicted, imprisoned and dishonorably discharged quicker than a cat could lick its ass.

Here’s the sports comedy part: He can’t Finish the Drill because he was too much of a candyass to ever start.

Does that mean Jesse Palmer is in for Urban’s hate, too? Or is attacking an ESPN analyst off-limits for Florida?

If pride cometh before the fall, I hope their fall is flat on their face this season. Nothing in football would be sweeter than to see them NOT win the BCS title this year. I hope, along with the rest of the SEC, to see this team take a nosedive soon and very soon. Stomping on the Gators with a hobnailed boot would be fantastic.

Meyer to Gator Nation: “Do I have a god complex? No. I am god… and Tebow is my one and only son, you dig?”

Me to Rest of Humanity: “If that’s the case, can we go ahead and crucify the sumbitch?”

Much better choice! Before settling on someone with a bland low-key demeanor like Keanu, I kept trying to think of the actress who looks like Mark. Couldn’t remember her name and only could only think of Holly Hunter who didn’t look like him.

“You’re either a Gator or you’re not a Gator”. That’s gd right. I, for one, am not a Gator. I am praying to Alec, err whoever, now that the face fall mentioned above happens early and often in 2009.

    “Pride cometh before the fall.”

Seems like a great description of 2008 UGA football.

    • Really? I think there were some chemistry flaws with last year’s squad, but oversized egos wouldn’t be how I’d describe the problem.

I wouldn’t say “oversized egos” per se, but I would argue the dawgs were overconfident in 2008. Heck, I even bought into the hype. You may recall my 2008 preseason prediction for the BCS title game was UGA and tOSU (how wrong I was!). I based this on the trajectory UGA ended the 2007 season with – I honestly believe the dawgs could have beaten any team in bowl season 2007. As an “objective” outsider looking in, it appeared the team was driven by hubris rather than humility (IMO).

No “seriously”, injuries galore cometh before the fall in ’08. Let me remind you that Florida holds the original patent on arrogance. They purchased it from the Romans.

Thanks for reminding me about Florida’s patent on arrogance. I remember reading about that in the “Big Book of Completely Made Up Bull Shee-ott”.

Other than Sturdivant, I don’t recall a single significant injury for UGA. Meanwhile, the Gators lost 8 to ACLs before the season started, including several starters. But please, don’t push the pause button on your whining about injuries – it’s good preparation for you in the lead-up to WLOCP 2009.

        • I don’t blame last year on injuries, but seriously, Seriously (I’ve been waiting to do that), Vince Vance, Jeff Owens, Dannell Ellerbe, Brannan Southerland – none of those names ring a bell with you?

I believe the Dawgs played a portion of the season with four healthy linebackers. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s kinda cutting it close.

Blame anything you like for last season. My claim is overconfidence was a factor in the disappointing season (and shouldn’t have been).

          Typical Gator hypocrite.

You didn’t hear that whining coming from me, pal. Injuries are part of the game and you may as well complain about losing due to the weather if you make excuses based on injuries. Besides, I could easily mention an upset victory in Jacksonville that most dawg fans blamed on DJ Schockley’s absence – so whine on!

              Tebow played in ’07.

              DJ did not in ’05.

Therefore, the two games are not comparable. ’05 was not an upset imo.

Maybe not an upset in your opinion, but check the rankings – a lot of people with better credentials than you said it was an upset. You’re saying that the two are not comparable – fine, I wasn’t comparing them. UGA beat UF soundly in 2007 because the Gators defense sucked. Tebow was beat up all season, but he couldn’t have won that game with the crappy defense they fielded. In 2008, it was a different story. 🙂

Frankly, injuries are the dumbest excuse for losing a game. You might as well say, “we would have won that game if we had recruited a better QB”. It’s just lame.

Dude – it’s more about having to play Joe T than it was not having DJ. If Joe Cox were the backup, I think we win the game. Btw, not saying it was an upset is a backdoor compliment to the ‘turds. The teams were much more evenly matched with Joe T under center.
