Revisiting a Dawgy theme or two

For your lunchtime reading pleasure, here are a couple of links to pieces that touch on subjects I’ve just blogged about.

The Albany Herald reports on Richt’s Bulldog Club meeting in Albany yesterday, and has two quotes from the man relevant to that “Preseason of If” vibe I discussed:

“I really believe Joe is going to benefit from the mature offensive line,” Richt said. “He will probably have better protection than Matthew ever had in his career. Our runners will probably have a little more space than Knowshon ever had. If that is true, we could end up being as productive even though those guys are gone.”

I think he’s right about that. Offensive line play will be one of the two biggest keys to the season. Now if we can just get the starters sorted out, we’ll have something.

“Bottom line is if people build up inside we will go outside,” Richt said. “If we can’t make plays outside when people are determined to stop the run, then we will have big problems.”

For that, he will rely on freshman receivers Marlon Brown and Rantavious Wooten to instantly contribute, admitting the chance of either redshirting to be “very, very slim.”

No real surprise there. Let’s hope the talent comes through – quickly.

On another front, one that stirs plenty of passion among Dawg fans, Bulldawg Illustrated makes a good point about where fans’ attention should be drawn with regard to the Georgia-Florida game.

… If a fight absolutely must be picked, then lets pick one over the schedule. I’ll argue all day long that the schedule is more of a liability than the plane ride, the heat, the name of the stadium, or any reason given for moving the game.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve only had 3 open dates prior to the Florida game, whereas the Gators have had 13. Georgia is 4-16 over that time frame. Break it down over the last 4 years (Richt vs. Meyer) and Georgia won the game in which we have had an open date but Florida didn’t (2007). Florida won the two games in which they had the open date and we didn’t (2005, 2006). Florida also won when we both had games the week prior, but they played Kentucky at home and we played LSU on the road (2008).

If you want to bitch about something, how about this?

P.S. Take a look at our future schedules and, as they sit right now, 2009 is the last year Georgia has an open date before the Florida game until at least 2017.

Go back further to 2004- we had an open date and they didn’t (lost to an atrocious Mississippi State team, fired [NAME REDACTED]).

Also, you give Georgia a week off before in 2005, and you-know-who torches the Gators in Jacksonville, easy.

I agree that the week off has been most decisive in Georgia’s recent Jacksonville woes. But wouldn’t making the series home-and-home not provide us with more flexibility so that it would be easier to schedule an off-week before the UF game?

Looking at our future schedules, all of the games but one through 2016 involve SEC opponents. But those SEC games all are tentative rather than confirmed and thus are at least theoretically open to being changed, if we have the flexibility to do so. We may currently have some limited flexibility to try and change the schedule, but we need all the flexibility we can get to try and obtain an open date before the UF game.

Good question (although Jax doesn’t seem to have prevented the Gators from scheduling the off-week frequently) that I don’t know the answer to. Anyone have a clue?

On a side note. A person who attended that Bulldog club meeting in South Georgia said Richt asked the audience would they prefer to stay in Jax, go Atlanta-Jax, or go home and home. He said he was surprised that about 75% said Atlanta-Jax. Felt for sure the majority would want it to stay as is.

If I’m CMR this open week is what I’m lobbying for instead of a change of venue. Spurrier made it known he wanted the week off prior to the WLOCP and look at how that worked out for him. I’m not saying that’s the only reason for the losses but it was a factor.

I have read before (maybe a quote from Damon Evans?) that teams put in requests to the SEC for when they want open dates in the conference schedule, and they “try” to accommodate. Supposedly we asked for one last year and didn’t get it. We need to figure out whatever magic SOS used on the SEC to get the open date every year and exercise it.

I’m not sure if SicEmDawgs was just guessing about the dates of future SEC games or what, but my understanding was that teams make their open date requests each year. (Which, given the current era of non-conference contracts being rewritten constantly, is the only sensible way to do it.)

Sicem’s schedules are tentative. The games marked with ** are confirmed and not a single one of the games that precedes the Cocktail Party has a ** by it. It’s just a guess on his part, per this disclaimer:

Note: The 2010-2016 Future Football Schedules are tentative. The opponents are correct, but some of the dates are unconfirmed and are based on prior scheduling patterns. Confirmed dates are noted by a double asterisk (**) after the opponent name.

Also, 2012 looks very ‘doable’, from my viewpoint…

  8. Florida’s week off before the GA game has always been my biggest gripe.

Can someone please look up the stats over the last 20 years of how the team with the open date has performed? I seem to recall it being shown on tv once and it is something like a 90%+ predictor of who will win.

    • The team with an off-date has won in 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

1997 is the only year in which a team with an off-date lost.
