I’m leaving Dodge City early this morning to get up to Nashville to watch our guys play, so I won’t have anything else for you until tomorrow.
Feel free to use the comments to this post to record your reactions to the game.
And just to get you in the mood quicker, here are some last minute things to ponder.
First, from georgiadogs.com, here’s a statistical breakdown of Georgia’s total yardage by class this season that’s pretty revealing:
All-Purpose yards this season by class
Seniors: 220
Juniors: 151
Sophomores: 1,645
Freshmen: 817
Also from the same site, check out the sack numbers yielded by the offense under Richt.
Sacks allowed in a season Under Mark Richt
2001: 12 games, 15 sacks allowed
2002: 14 games, 31 sacks allowed
2003: 14 games, 47 sacks allowed
2004: 12 games, 21 sacks allowed
2005: 13 games, 20 sacks allowed
2006: 13 games, 17 sacks allowed
2007: 13 games, 15 sacks allowed
2008: 13 games, 17 sacks allowed
2009: 6 games, 5 sacks allowed
I guess what I wrote in response to Scarbinsky’s “has anyone else noticed that Georgia hasn’t quite been the same since Neil Callaway left for UAB?” was wrong. Pass protection has improved since Callaway left. My apologies, Kevin.
Okay, those of you who in the preseason saw Idaho becoming bowl eligible (h/t EDSBS) before Georgia, raise your hands… Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Finally, if you didn’t catch this in the comments, you know what a sucker I am for gallows humor, so I leave you with this:
“we’re not rebuilding. we’re still unraveling.”
Until tomorrow…
Bold prediction of the week:
Dawgs upset both Florida & Tech but lose to Kentucky.

Rather than Kiffy helicoptering in for recruit visits, I would highly recommend something much flashier—like skydiving.
I’ll pack the chute.

Neil Callaway leaving was one of the greatest things that has happened to us in recent years, his offensive lines always underachieved, with the arguable exception of this year Stacy Searels’s lines have overachieved, while the run blocking this year is certainly not great, I think the big difference in the run game is the MAJOR drop off in talent from Knowshon to his successors.

That this year’s line has underachieved is not arguable. And while Knowshon leaving certainly hurt our run game, it is more and more likely that last year’s line was also poor at run blocking, but we had a stud that could still get yards.
If our plan for improving the run game is to hope another back like Knowshon emerges, then we have no plan.

I hear you about the run blocking dude, but look at those sacks allowed stats, those are pretty good.

The fact that David Greene survived that 2003 season with all four limbs and a head is still one of the greatest gridiron achievements of all time.

That was a rough season. I mean, especially considering how well the line played in 2002, Greene likely was in shock for the majority of 2003.

My dad, now 83 and a former UGA punter, told me this same thing after the Tennessee loss. Our line is outstanding at pass blocking, but dismal in run blocking. Knowshon was such a special talent that he was able to overcome this.

I’m praying we run 32-Waterboy-Skidue, where Martinez sends in some walk-on with the goal of poking Tebow in the eyes on every play until he’s thrown out.
We could maybe win if that happened.

Fullbacks and line can’t sustain a block at the point of attack for nothing. Cox has threaded the needle on a couple but drops again hurt

Game over. No turnovers I believe. Yeehaa.
Mike Bobo on the sideline is a good idea. I thought I actually detected a theme in the play calling: keep running and pounding to wear them down in the 4th quarter. If so it worked.
Defense gets a B+.
Offensive efficiency and execution needs work.
The guys above who think the run blocking atrophied because we had Knowshown may have a point.

Remember, that was probably the worst Vandy team in a decade. It took almost the entire 1st quarter before Bobo realized A.J. was on the field.

A win’s a win.
But if I’m an OC with an automatic weapon like AJ, I’m derelict in my duty if I only throw at him 5 times.

Not sure if anyone noticed, your Offense doesn’t get any respect when the enemy declines penelties on second and ten.

It is a good time to get a week off. Lets hope that something miraculous happens and we are able to come up with a plan to stop Tebow and move the ball. I still have faith but still believe that we need to rethin things and make some changes. Go Dawgs and lets get better and kick some ass!

I thought our tackles were significantly better this week. We were getting people to the ground this time when in previous weeks we did the “hit and run”, we hit them but they run away.
Regarding the UF game, someone please tell Martinez not to try the zone against their receivers.
