Long range kicking

Check out this piece at cfbstats.com on the active leaders in 50+ yard field goals.  Mr. Walsh is in pretty good company.

… Eight of the ten kickers in the table are on the Lou Groza Award watch list — only Mahoney and Jackson missed the list.

Note that all of the kickers tied or ahead of Walsh in long range field goals made are juniors and seniors.

I hate it when people who have never played the game try to confuse those of us who did with “numbers” and “facts”. I know in my heart that Blair Walsh has a dead leg and is best suited for kicking the ball out of bounds.

That way, our defense has more of a challenge in store for them.

Coach Fabris’s post above got me thinking about the inconsistent treatment the coaches give Walsh. On the one hand, we’ll trot him out to attempt a 68 yd field goal, then after he makes it, we don’t trust his leg to kick deep on the kickoff.

I guess it’s all part of the plan.

If this kid can survive the head trip our coaches have had him on for 2 more years the NFL will be getting one bad a$$ kicker.

Interesting stats on that site when you look at the UGA team statistics considering all the negativity from fans. I am also very unhappy with the OL run blocking, the inconsistency at QB from game to game, and the vulnerability to the short to intermediate pass coverage, but I expected us to be much worse on a comparitive basis.

We are pretty equal, or ahead, of our schedule with yards per rush, QB rating, yards per play, 3rd down conversions, kick returns, kicking game, points for an against, etc. I realize you don’t win with stats but to listen to how everyone says we make other QBs look like Joe Montana, or cannot stop anyone, the stats just don’t show us to be a team that cannot compete. And this isn’t against cupcakes like other teams have played for 1-4 games thus far.

OT Question regarding 69dawg’s comment about Walsh’s kicking, what happened to Coutu after he got to Seattle? I thought he was pretty solid but he didn’t beat out the Seahawks kicker. Like Walsh, he was rated among the Top 3 when he left UGA I have seen other teams fire their kicker and pick up someone but have heard nothing about Brandon’s status. (I admit I don’t follow much NFL news, so he could have latched on and I just didn’t see it.)

He was the backup kicker last year. The Seahawks waived him last month.

Thanks for the response, I didn’t think I had heard of him being traded. Seems he could help some teams around the league but maybe Seattle doesn’t want to release him.

He tried out with Tampa Bay a couple of weeks ago, but they went with a kicker the Colts waived.

I guess he’s just unlucky with his timing, given the glacial pace of turnover among kickers in the league.

Pretty surprising given his consistency at UGA. Sometimes it is an adjustment with the tee, or turf, but Brandon never used a tee coming into Georgia, and kicked off real turf. Maybe he is pressing because, other than in wind, he was money.

I’ve asking the jail for months to put a damn blocking sled in the holding cell. God knows VV needs the work.
