Perverse thought of the day

He probably is too good a guy to think like this, but I wonder if Mark Richt doesn’t get some some slight, secret degree of pleasure out of making the media twist in the wind on the defensive coordinator hire story.

Evil Richt probably does, now that I think about it.

“and the answer, my friend, is twisting in the wind?”

“Twisting, Twisting, Twisting the night away?”

January 8th is not in the first week of the month.

Actually, Jan 3rd starts the first week of January because the 7th is the first Thursday of the month. I’m just saying…. for whatever that is worth.

I would prefer if he left Kirby Smart alone. 🙂

+1 Many of us feel the same way. Good guy, probably would be a decent coordinator, but a bad fit for us at this time.

I am not really sure where your head is at this current moment.
What do you mean by “bad fit for us at this time?”

The guy just won the Broyles Award and is coaching in the MNC. What about that says a bad fit for us?

What if he is made head coach in waiting so he doesn’t leave?

Let me think for a moment about whether I want a kabuki theatre HCIW thing going on. Okay, that’s done. Bobby Part Deux? Why would I ever agree to hire my replacement? I shall whenever I feel like it present to you a DC who shall bless me by being grateful for that position and that position only. He shall therefore pose no immediate threat to my job security (cough) Murpheesboro.

In my mind we are two years late pursuing Kirby Smart. He is one of, if not THE hottest property on the market to day….and I am talking about for a HC spot. He could even get that offer this winter. If not, and he has a good year at either Bama or UGA this coming season, he will be certain to be interviewing for several HC jobs next winter. Do you really want another disruption/search just 12 months later? I don’t, and I don’t think it is good for recruiting or team continutity either? Think he wouldn’t take one or more assitants with him, those guys he just recently picked to come to UGA with him? Too messy for me.

Let’s take the other side, he comes to Athens and the program struggles for a couple of years so he falls off the radar. Are we happy then? No, it means we probably made a bad hire, in which case we are screwed again, but with no momentum. At that point if things don’t seem to be working, we might begin to feel the Bama defense (and LSU’s) could be strong because of Saban. I don’t like either scenerio. This is no knock on Smart, he may be a great DC, but I don’t see how this pays out for us, just an opinion.

As to the HC in Waiting, are we in a position to make that kind of decision before he even joins the staff? Will there be good chemistry? Does he have the skill set for being a HC at a program the size of UGA? How do we know this, from his time at UGA before?

I am not sure how I feel about the whole HC In Waiting concept as it has been applied, but I am sure I don’t want to make that commitment until we get a closer look at the merchandise. There are many great regional managers who don’t have the skill set to run a national operation. And even more assitant coaches who cannot take that next step.

It may come to that with someone once they are in place, but I would definitiely not want to use that as a way to hire KS. I actually am more in the camp of hiring people who have already been HCs. You get lucky sometimes with bringing a coordinator in, like we did with Richt, but that is too risky in today’s market and where UGA is within that market.

What does MNC stand for? Something National Championship, I’m sure, just never known the “M”

    Thanks,

No it’s not, son. It stands for Monte’s Nun Chucks. Now give them back to me before you knock your front teeth out. You may not have socialized Dental coverage. You’re welcome. Dad.
