Greatest Athletic Director of Our Era

What is it with you and head coaching candidates, Mike Hamilton?  Your last hire of a young man with a career losing record who’s the son of a famous coach worked out so well you decided to try it again?

Seriously, as Groo points out, Hamilton’s got nobody to blame for his situation but himself, thanks to that revolutionary new concept he sold himself on in laying out those ridiculous contracts for Junior’s assistants.  It all came back to bite him in the ass.

UPDATE: Not quite so fast – maybe.  Sumlin’s an intriguing option.

Hamilton is not doing a very good job as UTk AD. He’s the one who got Phil Fulmer fired because of all those games scheduled in ’08 when the other team had the previous week off–5 I think. UTk lost 4 of ’em as I recall. Hamilton was the guy who should have gotten the ax, not Fulmer. (Please do not give me that weak sh!t about the SEC setting the SEC schedule. You saw what a real AD does when Mal Moore reacted to the same BS about a future Tide schedule with the same problems.)

P.S. David Cutcliffe has to much class and integrity for what UT has devolved into. Remember, you can’t spell “devolve” without “vol.”

This is a unholy mess at UT. Unbelievable.

Getting Sumlin would be quite an accomplishment at this point. Dooley’s got the name, but I almost feel sorry for him if he takes that job. Those fans up there might eat him alive. This coaching hire might be Hamilton’s last hurrah.

Music that Mike Hamilton has on his iPod to help him concentrate better on today’s activities inside the Green Zone…

I’ve got to admit that, as much as I hate those Big Urnge wearing morons, I will find it difficult to pull against Derek. Here’s hoping he brings some class to the bunch.

Reports are that if the Dooley or Sumlin deals fall through, Hamilton’s Plan F Troop is supposedly this guy

Still, the USC AD gets the DA of the Week award for hiring Kiffin.

“An announcement could be made by Tennessee officials as early as Friday. However, a source told ESPN.com that the deal is not finalized and that Houston’s Kevin Sumlin remains a possibility.”

Hamilton’s coaching candidates are like al-Qaeda #2’s – when one goes down another one immediately pops up to take its place.

Glad Cutcliffe turned them down, he is definately a better coach than the Laner.

    Dear Mike Hamilton,

Thanks for everything you have done for UT athletics over the last 15 months. You deserve a raise and a promotion… to athletic director at Florida! Please let us know if there is any way we can assist your move to Gainesville for your next great challenge. And if you want to go ahead and consider replacements for Urban Meyer, I understand Jim Mora, Jr., is available.

    Regards,

I will say, in his defense, that Bruce Pearl was a really excellent hire.

By the way, does anybody remember that before Hamilton was hired, Pat Summitt was a candidate for the AD job there? Wonder how she’d have handled this. I bet she’d have kicked Lane Kiffin’s ass.

Well, looks like Derek Dooley is in at UT. I won’t look forward to playing against him, but it will be nice to have a little more class in the SEC coaching ranks.

While I cannot blame him for taking the job at an SEC school with the past success as UT, I feel sorry for Derek Dooley. I think he is a class guy who will try to bring some dignity to the program but he is not a heavy hitter. We all know the cupboard is bare there. They have to have lost recruits over this. Plus he’s stuck with the coaches that Lane didn’t want. He cannot even bring his own staff. Next year will be a long season and the hillbillies have a short memory. The over/under for DD at UTk is 3 years.

I thought hiring Junior was the dumbest decision he had ever made until I read about the $300K retention bonus he paid Monte for being employed on 12/31. As the Lane Train pulled out for southern Cali with all that gold I wondered if Hamilton even knew NSD was in February?

Honorable Mention goes to having to pay CLK $7 million if he were fired but only getting $800K if he left TN. Seems a little out of balance from a negotiating standpoint doesn’t it? Perhaps he knew in advance you didn’t want to make it too hard for the idiot to leave.

I will say hiring DD is a huge step forward, in both class and coaching ability, from the embarrassment of taking Kiffin. I doubt either of them could take the Vols above 4th or 5th in the SEC East next year, nor do I expect any better fan support from a fanbase that is pretty divided.
