GTP sells out.

Ahem.

I suppose a little explanation is in order.

From its inception, Get the Picture has been a labor of love on my part.  I didn’t start it and nurture it with the aim of it becoming a money making venture.  And that hasn’t changed.

WordPress made it easy to stay pure.  It’s the best of the basic (read:  free) blogging platforms that I experimented with when I launched this blog and it didn’t allow for third party advertising to be promoted.

Until now, that is.  WP introduced a beta program that allows certain bloggers to run AdSense ads on their sites.  GTP qualified and I’ve decided to take a modest plunge.

It’s a pretty easy way to generate revenue and it’s hopefully not too obtrusive.  If I find that it’s not meeting my expectations in either way, rest assured that I’ll take it down from my site.

I do hope this bit of commercialization doesn’t offend anyone too much.  Please let me know if it’s a big problem for you.

Do you get commission from ad clicks? I use firefox + ad-blocker so I don’t notice anything different.

  2. You do great work here and it’s more credible and worthwhile than most monetized blogs. Don’t apologize for making what will be a very small amount of change by adding something that isn’t even a minor inconvenience to your readers. It’s long overdue. Congrats.

I’m all for you receiving some kind of return for your efforts Senator… until AdSense starts picking up on the use of the word “Gators” and starts dropping links to gator websites and paraphernalia. Then I might get upset.

Perhaps a substitute word should be chosen in order to avoid triggering those links. “Filthy swamp hicks” sounds nice.

    • No offense, Rum Dawg, but I can’t see ads appealing to “filthy swamp hicks” as being that big of a step up. Perhaps you could refer to them as ‘our sexy lady friends.’ Less accurate, to be sure, but likely to be less visually problematic as well.

why should any of us begrudge you some ad money? I’m surprised it took you this long to decide to take the plunge.

It’s sad we live in a time where people have to apologize for trying to make money. Make that cash, Senator!

Nothing short of you changing the header to a picture of Corch and Tebow would stop me from making GTP my first stop of the day. Thank you, Senator, for such a wonderful blog, and congrats on the revenue opportunity.

Yeah, but he walked on and earned it his senior year. I love this blog, and a few ads are not going to change that.

You’re not going to get many – if any – complaints. You put in more time than almost all the bloggers except for maybe Hale, you deserve a bit of monetary reward.

For God’s sake man where did you get such a hideous picture for a caption? Never mind, I don’t want to know. I just hope Jimmy Carter doesn’t see it. He’s apt to think that the 70’s are back in full force and mount a challenge to Obama in 12. After all there are some things worse than socialism and he is one of them. Remember Billy Beer? Despite the impending nightmares that are sure to come from Tarzanette and Jane, thanks for the great work on the premier football blog on the net.

Are you going to run into any intellectual property/copyright issues by going to profit motive?

    • Good question. Hopefully not. I try to be careful about what I post – I’ve only been asked to remove one item in three-plus years – and I will continue to do so.

Anyway, while my traffic is good for a regional college football blog, on the larger stage of the blogosphere, GTP is a blip.

Only one problem. The first ad I to appear on your site was for North Avenue VoTech.

Ads are fine, but you need some standards.

May I offer a humble style suggestion? You might want to consider creating a signature type of end to your posts so that we can easily tell where your post has ended and the ad has started.
