Time for some more Georgia-is-doomed-in-2010 stuff

georgiadogs.com breathlessly announces the inclusion of a number of Bulldog players on Phil Steele’s preseason All-American and All-SEC lists.

Five Georgia football players have been named to Phil Steele’s 2010 preseason All-American teams while 14 have been named to the publication’s All-Southeastern Conference preseason squads.

You can probably guess most of the names that appear in the release, but here’s the significant part:

… Georgia is one of five teams with at least two players named preseason First Team All-Americans. Georgia and Alabama each have two players on the First Team and are the only two SEC teams with multiple players. North Carolina and UCLA leads the way with three players each on the First Team.

The Bulldogs and the Tide also lead the conference with six players on the All-SEC First Team. Georgia and Florida top the league with 14 players listed on all four preseason teams combined.

Say what you will, but the perception is that this team is not lacking in talent.  Whether that talent will be deployed as successfully this season as the Floridas and Alabamas of the college football world manage is the question.

Ummm, I don’t guess you keep up with NFL draft prognostications, but UNC could potentially have 5 players off of its defense drafted in the first round…

Some are projecting Robert Quinn as the #1 pick next year, he is a DE for UNC. Additionally, they have DT Marvin Austin, S Deunta Williams, OLB Bruce Carter and LB Quan Sturdivant.

Butch Davis has done a really good job recruiting in-state and they were 6th nationally in total defense, they just don’t have a QB.

UNC should be the runaway favorites in the ACC this year, and should have the top-ranked defense in the country.

Mett should check out there… 5-ish hours away from Athens, NOT on UGA’s near-term schedule

They should be runaway favorites but UNC has seemed to struggle on offense in key games. Maybe this is the year that changes.

You are right about Davis recruiting NC well – over half of their roster is homegrown. Plus he has seemed to dipped his toes into FL, VA, GA, & SC for some key recruits.

I am really looking forward to the UNC opener against LSU. Mr. Jefferson didn’t look too impressive this spring and that UNC defense will show if the Tigers are any type of contender in 2010.

…If only we could all play against ACC level competition just imagine how many AA’s and First Rounders we could have!!!

Second team AA at Kicker? I don’t know who is better than Blair Walsh, but he should have won the Groza Award last season. He was a stronger kicker than Tiffin, with an outstanding percentage on 40+. That missed kick against GT must have come at the wrong time.

As a unit our OL is as good as there is in CFB but individually they must not have the creds to measure up to the top guys. I like the talent, experience, and depth we return aqcross the frontline. With two quality RBs and solid FBs working behind that line, Murray should be able to ease into the position without having to carry all the load. Still, that first road test in Columbia comes very early, for once I am hoping for an early start time.

  3. When fall camp opens the Dawgs will have more SEC caliber Athletes/football players on campus than at any other time since the NCAA went to the 85 Scholly Limits.
The Dawgs are still relatively young , inexerienced, & learning a new defensive scheme. But, the talent is there & 2010 & the next 4 years are looking better & better to this Dawg Fan. The players, the coaches, & me: We all expect a really exciting 4 year run. .

You’re right tbone. 2011 is probably the year for UGA (and beyond). Hope AJ hangs around for it.

You have to be impressed and thankful for the work Coach Fox and his staff has done since he came to UGA. He has brought excitement, fun, and future to this program. No doubt he, his staff, and his players are going to change how UGA basketball is viewed in this state, the SEC, and within the UGA fold.

What the hell are you getting on about, man?

This is a UGA football blog. Take the basketball and baseball stuff over to dawgsports.

You keep posting this stuff that is totally irrelevant to the topic at hand.

I think a lot of the measured predictions by our fanbase is rooted in the inexperience at QB, the wholesale defensive changes from last year, the undisciplined play the has resulted in crushing TO’s and penalties, the disappointing losses of the last two years, and high level of play of UA and UF in ’08 & ’09.

But you have done a great job at making a case for a resurgence in 2010.

You nailed it ‘ski. I think the Dawgs have a fine team this year – definitely good enough for a MNC run. But there’s that pit-of-the-stomach sense of impending doom that we’re going to screw it up somewhere along the way. The dumb sc loss in early ’07 comes to mind. The staff has to find a way to coach those few new starters up, avoid those stupid giveaway losses, and achieve that high level.

IMO, UGA’s season will depend on the health of the O line and how well the new D linemen can adapt to the 3-4. Boling has become the leader of the O line and Cordy Glenn is NFL first round material. Jones is a mauler and a brawler, he will fight you in those trenches all day. Josh Davis added the final piece. If those guys can stay in the lineup Murray and the defense will benefit.

Jax Dawg, why doesn’t UGA hire Pat Dye as a consultant and let him threaten the press? That bunch of candy asses needs to be threatened. Dye could start with the AJC!

How about Goldberg as consultant? He has a way with words. But do you think he’d really threaten “Mister College Football !!”? Wouldn’t want the Senator’s blog to be on ‘double secret probation’ by the national press club.

Then again, not sure there will be an AJC much longer. Didn’t their circulation drop 25% in the 1st quarter this year? Ouch! Mark Bradley might be standing at the off-ramp with a “will pick your team to win SEC for food” sign before long.

  10. I actually hoped Dooley was going to hire Dye instead of Richt in 01. I was wrong there. Also, I totally ignore the AJC & ESPN college football. That helps keep my blood pressure under control. They are Idiots.

I understand that Pat Dye tried his best to get the UGA job in ’01. Anyone got any inside info on why he didn’t get it?

      Like

  11. I don’t have the answer about Pat Dye but I remember that Barbara Dooley was in his camp to get the DAWG JOB. Dooley never publicly said why he hired Richt instead of Dye. Dye’s Tigers did real well against Dooley’s Dawgs (maybe too good ?) plus age might have been a factor.

My recollection was that Vince wanted to give JD at least another year. Michael Adams called BS on that, rowed Vince’s boat to shore, made Vince fire JD and then hire Richt.

If MA’s plans to overthrow Vince were underway, he and Vince never having been BFF before, and if MA knew Barbara or Vince, or both, wanted to hire Pat, he was having none of that.

So despite all the less than great love that MA gets, deserved or not, he ends up batting .500 on head coach hiring: a win by hiring Richt and a loss by hiring Harrick.

And as far as i can tell, MA still gets all the blame for Harrick but none of the credit for Richt.
