Paul Johnson doesn’t do nuance well.

The feisty Georgia Tech coach thinks his remarks about punching Georgia fans in the face were taken out of context.

ACCSports.com:
You’ve had some run-ins with the Atlanta media in the last two years. Can you talk about the incident that led to the “Johnson says smack them in the mouth” headline in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that caused such a stir following the Georgia game last fall?

Johnson:
The paper sensationalized the whole conversation. We’re getting ready to play Clemson the next week (in the ACC title game). I’m trying to move on. The guy on the radio won’t let me move on.

And finally he gets to it and says, “What do you say to the Tech fans who have to hear about Georgia all year long?” I said, “You know what, they probably gave it to them a year ago, so turnaround is fair play. They have to take it for a year. Move on.” And he follows up, “What if they just won’t stop? What if they keep going on and on?” I said, “Well, if you’ve heard it enough, and you tell them you’ve heard it enough, and they still won’t hush, you turn around and smack them in the mouth.” That was the whole conversation. They left out the first part. The headline says, “Johnson says smack them in the mouth.”

It’s the Popeye defense:  “that’s all I can stands, I can’t stands no more!” A DragonCon fan can only take so much, you know.

I believe the Techwood thugs have been beating up enough of the nerds lately that they should look for more nonviolent methods.

the Tech administration, in conjunction with the Carter Center, is about to announce the formation of the Paul Johnson School of Conflict Resolution. In the offseason, Mr. Johnson will host seminars attempting to spread the gospel of triple option solutions in an I formation world. He will also lead a team of mediators in trying to reach a resolution of issues between Isrealis and Palestinians, Russians and Chechens, and most importanly, Irvin Meyers and Lane Kiffin.

For crying out loud, Mini-Skipper. You made the comment. Man up and own it. Apologize if you regret it, stand on it if you think it was justified, but don’t just try and blame the whole thing on those lyin’ Atlanta newspapers. Even Tech people won’t buy that, especially when UGA kicks your doughy little ass again this fall. You keep banging your gums, we’ll keep flattening your B back.

Completely not how it went down! I actually heard the interview live on 790 and CPJ was not backed into a corner. He was playing big boy on the radio with Brandon and Jeff, yet now the story changes. How rapidly CPJ has adapted to his GayTech surrounding!

I’m still waiting for the first Tech fan to try to smack me in the mouth. Believe me, I was asking for it that night at Bobby Dodd, but couldn’t find a taker. CPJ is a good coach, maybe even great, but he doesn’t have a very good grasp of what kinds of people make up his fan base. No, running home and putting a boxing game into the ol’ XBox and programming a character to wear a red shirt and then e-punching it’s about as close as 99% of Techies are going to come to smacking anyone in the mouth.

Unfortunately, in order for a Tech fan to smack you in the mouth, you’d have to create an avatar in World of Warcraft first and meet them in the realm of Mordor.

    Advocating violence is not good.

True. But can we make an exception? Perhaps a corner blitz off the edge…. Dawg CB gets the qb untouched and there is a “violent collision” behind the center?
      just sayin’

Just like watching cars wreck is not a part of NASCAR.

‘George Carlin summed up the relationship between war and football: “In football the object is for the quarterback, otherwise known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy’s defensive line.”

I am just shocked- SHOCKED- that the AJC would take something out of context and blow it up into a bigger deal and engage in sensationalism- SHOCKED!!!

That’s a fair point about the AJC, but I don’t think it applies in this case. It looks to me like the Johnson did some big-talk chest-pounding on the radio and is now trying to crawfish away from his antics. He probably realized it would be in the best interest of the health of his fan base to pipe down. I reckon he must have witnessed the slap-fighting techniques of some of the tougher nerds.
