Fortunately, Mike Hamilton doesn’t work in Athens.

I know we live in a strange world, but if this scenario were to play out and Greg McGarity hired Derek Dooley simply because his father coached here, I’d be looking for a new program to support so fast it would make your head spin.

Lots of crazy out there right now…

I don’t think CMR is going any where any time soon. However, my most basic concern is that the talent coming in may not right the ship fast enough for those who think that we are always entitled to 1980-1983 or 2002-2005 results, and reject as unacceptable results consistent with the balance of our football history. Therefore, I’m not certain that we get to 2012 without a change for the sake of change. I hope it won’t be an issue, but the barbarians are approaching the gate whether I like it or not.

Having said that, among the choices that would be presented to us, I think that Derek Dooley may be among the best of the choices. One benefit is that there is no way that Derek works for Adams, which means we add a Dooley and subtract an Adams, if that were to happen. I also think that UT is better than what most of us anticipated. They are at least competitive vs. superior teams and most thought they’d fall on their faces this season. In addition, while I am happy with CTG so far, having watched BSU play, I thought that CMR should have seriously considered UT’s current defensive coordinator, who presumably would come along.

So I suppose Senator the question is, beyond believing that any choice Hamilton makes is bad, what is your hesitation with Derek, if all of these things do come to pass?

    • Let me begin with your questionable assumption that the powers that be who backed Adams in his fight with Dooley the Elder are now going to side with the son over Adams. That’s never going to happen.

      Aside from that:

      1. You are judging Dooley’s merit based on a three-game SEC career.
      2. You have no idea who will be in the talent pool should Richt go.
      3. Dooley as a head coach has a career losing record. That’s going to be your choice after firing a guy with a 75+% winning record, compiled in the SEC? I’d love to hear McGarity spin that.
      4. Adding insult to injury, Dooley’s contract has a large buyout that UGA would no doubt wind up paying.

You know what that sounds like? Ron Zook at Florida.

No offense, but your question is just crazy.

        1) I assume that Derek is not even a candidate if Adams remains president.

        2) I assume that Derek is not a candidate for the Georgia job unless UT does very well. In other words, by the time there is a discussion about a new coach we’ll have a larger sample from which to judge Derek. If his success is Zook-like, McGarity isn’t calling Knoxville.

        3) I assume that CMR is our coach through at least the end of the 2011 season.

So the premise of the question is based on:

        If Adams moves on;

        If Derek Dooley has relatively good success at UT. Meaning finishing higher in the East than Georgia in 2011 for starters;

        If Dooley is raiding Georgia for talent because of concern about stability in Athens;

Why would this be a bad hire just because Hamilton did it? I’m suggesting that you look out 2 to 3 years down the road and view it from that perspective, because its clearly not an issue today. Think about UT riding high and UGA in the middle of the SEC come the end of 2011 or 2012. Again, this will only be an issue in the future. My thinking is that if we have to cross that road we’ll have:

        Smart

        Muschamp

        Dooley, and

        who the hell knows?

Dooley’s head coaching experience trumps Smart and Muschamp and the name still has a lot of currency in this state. So, if everything falls like that, my question is why not?

Again, I hope that we don’t get there. I’m just wondering why you are so sure that Derek is unworthy of consideration, ever. Surely he has to earn the consideration, but let’s say he does.

        • … and the name still has a lot of currency in this state.

That’s the only reason it’s being tossed out there. Put a different name with DD’s resume and you wouldn’t pay serious attention to it.

And why do I have to consider what might happen? If Richt goes, there are plenty of D-1 head coaches to look at who have already excelled in the real world. Give me real results over a name any time.

If he has the type of success that would garner the attention from us we could only land him because of his connection. If some other coach had gotten the ut job he wouldn’t even be a candidate because he’d stay. My point is that iif Dooley starts succeeding at a high level, he might want to come home because of who he is. And again, I agree that he hasn’t done anything worthy of consideration yet, but what I’d he does? I’m just not ready to right off the possibilty yet just because Hamilton hired him. I hope we dint have an opening, but I cannot understand what he’s done to disqualify himself at this point and he may yet become attractive. Let’s see how it plays out. This discussion reminds me of when donnan was fired. My first reaction was anybody but cmr. The reason was that I thought he’d be brad Scott who failed miserably at USC. Obviously I was wrong.

            Like

There really is no “split” in the fanbase. There are the UGA faithful (which is 95%) and the nutcase lunatic fringe element which is 5%, if that much. Trouble is that the nutcases don’t have lives and are beyond vocal while the faithful do have lives and say nothing because they are too busy with jobs, kids, etc.

For my part, I’m behind Coach Richt 100% until we finish the season. I think it’s incredibly bad form at any point during the season for any fan of the program (alum or otherwise) to be as negative as some are being now (especially only 3 games in). It’s smacks of “defeatism.”

It’s about trying to sabotage UGA’s program by scaring off recruits, Chuck. UGA is a real threat to Bama when UGA fields a good team. Most schools except for FLA cannot compete with a good Bama program even in their good years. Plus he probably hates UGA because of the UT thing, anyway.

But I still watch every game. I buy heaps of UGA merchandise directly from their licensed stores, and I go to the UK game every other year here in Lexington (and maybe once every few years I can work things out to go to a home game in Athens).

That shouldn’t make me less of a fan, and frankly I resent the implication that it does.

This “Mr. SEC” site has no credibility. Credible blogs like yours do everybody a disservice by linking to his posts and lending you some of your credibility. The fact that they’d publish such a patently ridiculous theory simply boggles the mind. IF Richt was shown the door, coaches would be lining up to coach in Athens. Richt “knocked the lid off the program” and now it’s clear that UGA is capable of winning titles and also locking down the talent in one of the nation’s most talent-rich states. Simply put, we won’t need to recycle the Dooley to get a head coach. Tennessee was damaged goods after Kiffykins, and they face uphill recruiting battles already because they are in a talent-poor state. That’s why they ended up with Dooley.

That said, Richt is safe. The two losses look bad because they were losses, but this team’s in position to get a lot better and hopefully be an even better team in 2011. “Mr. SEC” should bark up another tree.

If a guy who won 2 SEC Championships finished #2 in the nation 3 years ago, never had a losing season, plus averaged 10 wins a year got axed they would wonder what would happen to THEM if they took the job and THEY didn’t win enough to suit the crazy fringe. All the guys we would want have good jobs already. Why leave a secure thing to coach somewhere where inmates run the asylum? We would end up with a mediocre coach, certainly not one as good as we now have. Also, for all you guys who are in love with Muschamp and Smart let me say that it is a big leap from DC to HC and the skill set necessary for success is not the same. There is a risk to giving an assistant his first HC job no matter how good an assistant he may have been (see Weis, Charlie). Personally I would want a HC from a top program and if the Richt situation ended ugly none of those guys would be coming.

No doubt. Can we please dispense with the notion that either of those guys would automatically be on the list, much less even be interested in the job. If, and it’s a big IF, it ever came to that, I would make a bee-line for Gary Patterson or Jim Harbaugh. Flip a coin. Either of those guys are proven HC’s for whom our job would represent a marked step up from their current gigs, though I think Patterson would be the more likely to jump at the chance, as he’s currently not in a BCS conference, where Harbaugh is.

Gary Patterson has 85 wins in 9 seasons at TCU(less than 10 per year). He went 8-5 three years ago and had a losing record just 6 years ago, all in Conference USA. What automatically makes him a no-brainer upgrade over Mark Richt? Just asking.

When the Richt on the hot seat meme has come up before, I have often compared our current coaches resume to that of John Cooper @ Ohio State.

    There are a lot of similarities – Cooper’s overall winning % @ OSU was .703. Richt’s is .758.

Cooper and Richt have won conference games at nearly the same rate. .673 for Cooper and .676 for Richt.

Richt (7-2) has a superior bowl record than Cooper (3-7.) However, Cooper won 3 conference titles and finished second 4 times while Richt has won 2 SEC titles, finished 2nd once and tied for a division title once.

Their records against their most important rival (FL & MI) are equally abysmal. Both Richt has only managed 2 victories against FL and Cooper was only able to beat Michigan twice.

After two subpar years (6-6 & 8-4), Cooper was fired and OSU hired Jim Tressel. All Tressel has done take OSU on its most successful period of football since Woody Hayes’ early years.

Richt is a good coach but his career arc is definitely trending toward Cooper. I definitely think Saturday night in Starkville is a must-win game. In fact, I think all games between now and the WLCP are must win games. Otherwise, he will be staring 6-6 in the face and I think he will be out.

I sued this exact example in an earlier post to PuffDawg. Cooper was very well liked, a fine man, and won very often. He just couldn’t get over the hump that was Michigan. Similarly with Richt, if he had beaten FL a time or time more often, he’s likely have a national title or two to his credit.

We won’t know if Richt’s arc is trending to Cooper’s just yet – that is for ’10 and ’11 to reveal. I suspect that if the stagnation continues, Richt will be replaced after 2011, should his contract buyout not be very large at the time.

And for those worried about becoming TN or what AL was before Saban – I take much comfort that McGarity would not let that happen. I don’t want to see Richt gone, but this is a results-driven business folks and there may be someone better suited to take us up from here.

Richt’s last two years were 10-3 & 8-5. He is currently 1-2. I do not think any of us want to see where this goes if we lose on Saturday.

Led by senior quarterback Joe Germaine, the Buckeyes were the preseason number one throughout the majority of the season. The Buckeyes only loss came late in the season to the Michigan State Spartans. The team blew a late 15 point lead late in the game to fall short 28-24.

Because of the late loss, Ohio State was kept out of the National Championship Game, the 1999 Fiesta Bowl. Their regular season “miss” of not playing fellow tri-champion Wisconsin also cost the Bucks a trip to the 1999 Rose Bowl because Ohio State was the last to play in the Rose Bowl in 1997, Wisconsin last played in 1994.[1]

While the Buckeyes politicked for a share of the national title, their poor second half performance in the Sugar Bowl and #1 Tennessee’s victory over #2 Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl, forced the Bucks to settle for a number two finish in both polls.[2]

Cooper’s main problem was that he could not beat Michigan and could not win bowl games. Do not know much about the schemes. He was 11-1 in 1998 and they were ranked #1 until the first week of November when they lost to Mich. St. The BCS controversy that year was not about who played in the championship but about Kansas St. finished 3rd in the final BCS poll but not receiving an invite to a BCS game while OSU and Florida received at large bids.

Oh yeah … Cooper’s teams had persvasive academic and discipline problems.

He had HUGE talent at OSU putting gobs of guys into the NFL.

Richt probably has not had as much NFL talent as Cooper (but he still has a lot) and he does not academic issues. But the discipline thing is not solved and gets much harder to ignore when you less than double digit wins.

If it weren’t for the lunatic fringe, Dennis Felton would still be coaching the basketball program and Jim Donnan would be working on his 15th consecutive 8-4 season.

It is not reasonable to expect UGA to go 13-0 every season, but it is within reason to expect to watch a well coached team on Saturdays and have a program about which an alum can be proud every other day.

I don’t think that it is only the lunatic fringe who realize that neither of those conditions is currently being met. It is up to the coaches and players to shut the lunatic fringe up by honoring their responsibilities on and off the field.

Certainly he gets the opportunity to turn it around….I just keep thinking back to that day in 2004, sitting in the stands when the clock struck zero against Ufk, shocked, absolutely shocked that we had just lost the game.

During that time, it seemed that we were going to win every single game that we played. Even if we did not win, we were going to physically assault the other team so badly that they would likely not recover by the next week’s game. Other teams feared playing Georgia.

Now, it just seems that the opponent waits for us to beat ourselves. Reminds me a lot of sitting in the stands for all the Donnan years. Befuddling play calls, ill-timed penalties, momentum robbing special teams blunders head-scratching time-management decisions.

        I hope it gets better.

I remember a Bama player commenting after we had played them in 2002 that our defense was meaner, tougher, and faster than Oklahoma’s, who were in their early, glory years then, too, and who Bama had played a week or two prior to our game.

That just warmed my heart at the time I heard it. I hold out hope that we will hear similarly again before too long.

Don’t flatter yourself. Unless you have a very large adult beverage distributorship or otherwise give mega bucks to good ole UGA what you and everybody else thinks is irrelevant. Money talks and when the money has had enough Adams calls McGarity and CMR is history. UGA doesn’t make much money off of the lower level alums and believe me the lower level non-alums count for nothing unless they have lots and lots of money.

I am in the camp that if CMR is fired short of a total losing season with no bowl, we would have no shot at a quality Div I coach. We fired Jim Donnan and if you believe Mark was number one on Dooley’s list you are dreaming. Mark applied for the job and when we could not get a Div I HC to lateral to a school who had just fired a winning coach we went with Mark. Ohio State had a built in replacement in Tressle. He coached DIV IAA Youngstown to national titles and he knew the area. Look around see any FCS coaches around here that you want to promote??? Fire CMR and we are mediocre for at least 5 years.

The question is who would be “Tressel” and would we be happy being in the game but not winning it 😉

I have no idea who are Tressel would be. He was initially an unpopular choice for the OSU fanbase because he was not a “national” name and had not coached at the Division 1 level.

But he had an unbelieveable coaching record and had success at each rung of the collegiate ladder. Also, he had a great reputation within the collegiate coaching community. Finally, he had that connection to Ohio HS coaches in general because his family had a pretty stellar legacy for coaching football in Ohio.

I do not see anyone like that who has a connection to UGA. But again, only the true insiders knew about Tressel.

Our team is MUCH better than it’s fanbase at this point. All the “anyone not crying for a head are sheep” can try to convince themselves they are rational all they wish, but they are the raving lunatics that are in the pile, if not at the bottom on this whole hot seat-squared issue. It has become absurd.

I have already stated you can be constructive in expressing your concerns, or destructive, but the ones making idiotic posts and phone calls are hurting, and have hurt, this program. You have to be naive to think otherwise. Because of this, they are not good fans to me, true fans will handle downturns and adversity better than this. UGA has become the most delusional fanbase in the country….and we had to replace some stout competition for that title.

Anyone handling concerns in the workplace in the same manner would have been terminated before now. Just because you are anonymous on the internet or with a “handle” to sports-talk radio shows does not excuse bad behavior. Again, this does mean people should not/can not express concerns, or want to see changes, but there are more effective, and civil, ways.

Perhaps, but even allowing for the enthusiasm and passion CFB generates friends shouldn’t let friends post drunk. It is as if the each outlandish post incites someone to go further off course. I hear a lot of UGA fans grumbling, occasionally ranting, but you bring them back in. On the net it is like pouring more fuel on a fire once this subject occurs.

On Sunday I looked at Saturday’s gameday threads on three different teams’ message boards to see how fans reacted to being behind during the game, only UGA’s conceded in the FIRST quarter. Go look at Auburn’s where they confident their men would turn it around. Frankly, they were more dominated in the first half than we were. Hard to be envious of Auburn fans, but I really wish we had that mentality of sticking together and fighting back.

Most anyone can coach successfully when they have a full roster.

How many players has each team in the SEC lost since the first of the year due to injury, redshirt, suspension, or dropped due to violations? How many lost conference members lost an AD due to “violations”.

Just maybe…some of this is due to the atmosphere and lack of discipline in the Classic City.

Plus you need more than a couple of the annual 5 star players…how about just a complete roster of good players wanting to play for a team and a championship.

How many 5 star players are on the rosters at Boise and TCU…ask rivals and all of the forever and a day rankers that are there everyday. Boise has 4-5 players from the Netherlands. Explain that.

How many games will Green have played last season and this season? How much production did you get from that scholarship and position? Here is a clue. A 2-6 record in the SEC.

Just a question for you and some other Dawg fans out there, should/could CMR further discipline AJ for the jersey sale?

On Friday before the game, I had five fans come out and say that Richt should drop him from the program or offer him a redshirt this season. They cited the fact that Green should have known that it was illegal to sell his jersey to anyone. It was a selfish act that put his eligibility at risk.

The fact that he sold it to a potential agent he met on Facebook who may or may not be a drug dealer was stupid. It further tarnishes his reputation and that of our program.

Also, the fact that it has been a question and distraction for the program since the beginning of fall camp has been a problem. Not to mention that the AJ talk sort of dominated the week of USC and Arkansas.

Their feeling was that we do not owe AJ anything at this point. He is most likely to leave at the end of the year anyway and his draft status probably will not change whether he plays or not. If anything, he may only hurt his draft status if he plays now.

I dismissed their position on Friday but after Saturday’s loss to Arkansas, I sort of see their point.

If I was AJ and Richt “offered me a redshirt” I would tell him to stick it where the sun don’t shine. You people are idiots. You want UGA to win but you want to throw the best player off the team.

This whole fire Richt thing is just nuts. I wish we could know how many fans of other teams are posting as Dawgs just try and destroy any hope we have of recovering. I know what Finebum is up to but the rest of the crazies have got to have some agenda other than just being Bat crazy.

Wow. Senator, your blog is now officially the dogvent. We don’t owe AJ anything? The guy commited to UGA when he was barely a teen and never waivered through the recruiting process. He has been the best receiver to ever play for the school and has been the best player on the field every game he has ever played for us. He is personally responsible for 3 or 4 wins over the past couple of years. He didn’t rape a coed. He sold a jersey for $1,000. You think that he tarnished the reputation of the University. If anything, he has helped college football fans understand the absurdity of NCAA rules. He probably did it for the same reason we all drank beer at 19, occasionally speed or run an orange light, because it’s not a big deal and he didn’t think that he’d get caught. AJ has been a great representation of the university, as a player and a person. I look forward to him representing UGA on Sundays for a long time and I look forward to watching him play the balance of the 2010 season.

Really? A great representation to the University. Selling your game jersey for $1000 to a drug dealer that you barely know via Facebook?

Really? As a Georgia fan, we should be so thankful to AJ for illustrating the absurditiy of this rule. I am glad to have college football’s answer to Curt Flood on our team. Let’s just roll out the red carpet for him.

The fact is be broke the rule and if there is one team in D-1 who should know about this rule and understand the consequences of this rule , it should members of the UGA football team. The frickin’ rule was put in place after the members of the 2002 squad sold their SEC championship rings on eBay.

For that reason alone, Green’s move was stupid and it was selfish. Given the fact that he was supposed to be a leader and our most important offensive player in a transition year, we should not expect him to act accordingly?

He’s been suspended for four games. That’s hardly strewing roses in his path.

If we’re going to start imposing season-long suspensions for stupidity or selfishness, there are going to be a helluva lot of D-1 schools running short on players.

I must be missing something here. I have seen nothing, not a word, about AJ knowing this person as a drug dealer. This came up later in a seemingly unrelated event. Unless you know something more, this line should be dropped from your comments. I also don’t know if this guy was an “agent” in the sense we usually hear that term, nor do I know if AJ knew he was an “agent”, if indeed he is.

What we do know is AJ has just about served all of his punishment decreed by those who are supposed to know the WHOLE story. And we also know that punishment was more excessive than the one given the Bama player who did knowingly associate with a real agent on not one, but two occasions. If fact it was double the punishement for a little over 1/2 of the value received by the Bama player. A very weird punishment, on a relative basis, by any measure.

Yes, he broke a rule, and that was stupid. Ealey knowingly broke a rule/law and that was stupid too. Both hurt the team, should Ealy be removed for the season as well? Have you ever broken a law, speeding ticket or parking violation perhaps? If so, that was dumb too, and hurt your family in some way. After paying your fine and doing your community service, did you go fling yourself off a cliff? No, wait! I shouldn’t mention that idea to a UGA fan these days.

Global War on Marks (GWOM), “The Plan of the Day?”

    Butts-Mehre Defense Complex, Underground Bunker

    1547 hours, 23 September 2010

Mark, after hearing again from his Mother that she is not happy, gets the latest daily intel report from the other Mark.

    Mark asks Mark, “What’s up?”
Mark tells Mark, “Not much. Just the usual noise in the system. Some have gotten tired of blaming us and are blaming Van Halen for S&C.”
Mark tells Mark, “That’s good. That means they’re tired of thinking about us.”
Mark asks Mark. “What do you think Greg is up to?”
Mark tells Mark, “Walking into traps?”
Mark tells Mark, “The way I see it, Greg has two alternatives:

    1. Win out up until we lose in Jacksonville and take up this topic next year. We will then be in Year Two of the Five Year Plan to let a coach go.

    2. Not win out and lose before we lose in Jacksonville and they may implement this plan immediately after the loss before the loss in Jacksonville especially if we don’t take the one in Starkville. It’s a big game:

They’ll bitch and moan to Greg so much that he’ll have no choice other than to get a consultant for the new coach search after you grow weary of all this sh!t and tell the heathens to stuff it and split but do so with tact and diplomacy. It could even be this Left Coast crew.

Mark tells Mark, “Only problem with them is that they may recommend Lane because he can’t coach up a two-point conversion worth a darn and they’d want to get Pete back after a couple of 8-8 seasons with the Seahawks and the USC probation penalties furor dies down.”

Mark tells Mark,” Of course, they could circumvent and just directly hire Pete for $20,000,000.00/year with a contract for life so they could have their very own version of (pick only one): Saban/Spurrier/Petrino.”

Mark tells Mark, “That would be rich. Who would have the last laugh then?”

Mark replies, “I don’t know. Who?”

Derek Dooley as a replacement? Ugh. Teh stoopid burns.

If your wish list for Richt’s replacement has Muschamp or Smart as a primary option, then hand in your brain because you aren’t using it. Georgia does not need an alumnus to be coach. In fact, Georgia has more success when they do not.

If you want to find a model to follow, do what Florida did. Find a successful head coach who is ready to take the next step into the big time. Petersen, Harbaugh, and Patterson should be the first three names you come up with. If none of those three are available, then you should hold on to the one you got because they are the best available, and they still might not be as good was what you have.

+1 The last thing you want to do is hire down. If there is no one better available just hold. UGA has not learned much from history. Dooley pulls the plug and no coach in Div I will take it. Erk is too old so we turn to Ray, bless his heart, and are screwed for 7 years. Then we fire Ray and we still can’t get a quality Div I coach to give us a sniff so we try yo get a second rate hack in Mason but even he gives us the brush off. Dooley is now in panic mode again and makes a pretty good hire in Donnan but Donnan being the egotistical guy he is is never able to get over the beginning the last pick. He has the karma of a cobra with a tooth ache. He wins some games but is always being a horses butt with the fans and he can’t beat the skipper at GT.

Given our track record with hiring football coaches I’m guessing the first call from McGarity would be to Charlie Strong or more likely Dan Mullens. God help us we will become Florida without the championships.

If a change were to be made the question to ask is: Who is the next Urban Meyer or Nick Saban? That would be the guy you would want. Someone who went to places that were not doing well and turned them around. Let’s look at Meyer’s record for example. HC at Bowling Green which was a loser in the MAC. In 2 years they were winning 11 games. On to Utah where they had been losing for years. 2 years after Meyer arrives voila: 12-o. The guys who took over those programs after Meyer left are good coaches but they just maintained what Meyer had done (I think BG has slipped back now). Same with Petersen of Boise. He just is maintaining what somebody else started. Dan Hawkins, too. When Hawkins went to Colorado he couldn’t do it there because he had just maintained what had been started at Boise. The guy you want is the starter, not the maintainer.
