Only Steve Spurrier could mock a coach whose team sports a better record than his like this:

… Spurrier relayed something he read about the Ryder Cup, that the winning captain is on par with John Wooden and Vince Lombardi and the losing captain is like an SEC coach after a loss. He said that losing an SEC game makes you a dummy.

He was just setting himself up for this …

“Sometimes you can win and still be a dummy,” Spurrier said, eyes widening and grin stretching across his face. “We’ve learned that recently.”

Spurrier didn’t say Les Miles. But he might as well have.

Haney goes on to speculate about what Spurrier would have thought watching the last moments of the LSU-Tennessee game.Ā  Probably something along the lines of “I can’t believe this guy made us look that stupid.”

You mess with the Les, you get the Hat, dude.

Say what you want about The Evil Genius, they guy just calls them like he sees them. Feelings be damned. Everyone is talking about hiring Smart and Muschamp. I say hire Spurrier. Give him the athletes to run his offense and we will win the BCS. He still has a bad taste in his mouth over the UF/Meyer hire. I wonder if he would be tempted?

    • Go Dawgs!

He hates Georgia and always has, going back to his playing days at Florida when we ruined pretty much every season he played. He would laugh on the call with McGarity, and then he’d call a press conference to crow that we came crawling to him for help.

He does hate Georgia. But he did say this; back in the late 80s when UGA was looking for a replacement for Dooley, he stated publicly stated that had the AD Dooley given him a call, he would hae been interested.

Back in the mid 90s, Bianchi wrote a funny parody of what would have happened to the fortunes of both programs had that happened.

Needles to say, had that happened, in all likelyhood UGA would have still owned Florida in the 90s and Florida fans would be complaining that Jacksonville gives Georgia too much of an advantage.

To get out of coaching Duke, I’d probably be pretty interested in coaching for a major rival, too.

In all seriousness, I’m familiar with that situation, but I have to believe that circa 1990 or 1994 or whenever Florida would have come up looking for a new coach, he would have left Georgia to go there even if he’d come in to coach UGA after Dooley. I don’t see him ever coaching a school like UGA or FSU or Miami. I think that school loyalty does matter to him.

  2. I listened to the press conference – and I think everyone is misreading the comment. Remember, he spent a good deal of the conference grilling a local journalist for being a know-it-all.
I took his comment on Miles as more a slam of the media for jumping on an undefeated coach.

Oh, and thanks for the LSU fake punt memory – ruined my day

  3. Russ The Temporary Mascot

This has got me to thinking, “I wonder if the Ryder Cup could use a mascot?”.

That’s got to be as cushy a gig as Ryder Cup captain.

Ahhhhh, you don’t want to do that, talk about a boring job.

Beat Tennessee and bask in your fame.

Dummy as in putting Conner Shaw in to throw an interception?

Prick to the end. I have no doubt that when Spurrier dies, they’ll have to hire pallbearers.11 years since a conference title and counting Stevie
