Watch for the fake.

After a while, it really does reach the point where it’s beyond trying to understand what goes through the mind of Les Miles.

There is really nothing more stupid than running the ball with your field-goal kicker on 4th and 1, unless, of course, your field-goal kicker is better than your starting RB.

The reasoning for even going for the fake was so ridiculous that it boggles the mind.

I really don’t understand how LSU keeps winning. It is beyond comprehension. It is just…..there isn’t even a word for it…but, anyway, nice to see UF lose, and you know that losing to a numbskull like Miles cannot be good for Meyer.

It is beyond comprehension that these guys get a lucky bounce like that pretty much every time there is a close game. I think Miles must have sold his soul to Nick Saban somewhere down in the Mississippi delta.

Not to mention that the lucky bounce was an incomplete pass that the Refs could not see and that the replay official was not going to reverse per the SEC rule that states “if any call shall be against an SEC that is undefeated in the regular season, and that team is playing a team that has a loss, then the replay shall be decided in favor of the Undefeated team.”

I hate UF with my body and soul but that was just another case of SEC ain’t going to screw up the ratings.

“There is really nothing more stupid than running the ball with your field-goal kicker on 4th and 1…”

Unless you’re more confident in your kicker getting a couple of yards on the ground with the over-the-shoulder pitch than you are in him making a 52 yard field goal to tie the game.

I’m not an LSU fan (far from it) and I’m certainly in the camp that thinks that Miles is out of his gourd more often than not. That being said, it took balls to get unconventional and go for the fake when you might not have been convinced that you had a good shot at making the field goal.

Corch Meyers loses a stressful game to Alabama, and is later rushed to the hospital because of chest pains …

Mark Dantonio beats Notre Dame in OT with a fake field goal, and later has a heart attack …

… but, after all he’s been through, Les Miles seems fine.

A friend asked last night if Miles was a football coach or just a nutcase. I answered that I think he might be an escaped mental patient who played a lot of Tecmo Bowl.

As entertaining as LSU makes games, it pisses me off that a jack-ass like Les Miles gets the lucky breaks he does and a class act like Mark Richt gets absolutely none.

As I have said on this blog before, it ain’t just luck its the SEC refs. If you look at all the wacky endings in LSU games it always comes down to a ref’s call and LSU always gets the call.

Seriously? You can trip over 100 times hotter blondes walking around UGA’s campus right this minute.

Well I’m not on North Campus right this minute, more’s the pity. She looks pretty good from where I sit. Anyway saying she is hot in no way diminishes the girls at UGA, the last time I was in East-West the Playboy Mansion couldn’t have had hotter girls. In any event though agree to disagree on the LSU blonde, I like the flower.

How the Florida coaches did not know LSU was going to try that was inexcusable. Hell, Miles even telegraphed the decision by calling time-out.

Everybody on the Florida coaching staff, from Meyer on down, from the OC to the Dc to the special teams coordinator, was out thought by Les Miles.

Think about THAT for a minute

UF played it about as well as they could have. The kicker made a helluva run.

    • What fresh hell is this?

I had the same thought Mike. Inexcusable and just plain stupid.
How can Florida go for the block? If you do go for the block, you go up the middle on what should be a low trajectory kick (52 yds.) and the outside plays contain against the fake, especially after the time-out! Both players on the side of the fake went upfield hard. Even if LSU makes the 52 yarder you’re still in a tie ball game with time left on the clock for a game-winning FG.
Out-coached by The Mad Hatter…….brutal. If CMR was burnt like that, let’s face it, there would be many calls for his head.
Urban Myer is not nearly as smart as I thought he was. Anyone notice his “deer in the headlights” stare on the sideline that has replaced the cocky demeanor of the last couple years? Somehow I think that health wasn’t the only reason for his surprise retirement. Maybe he saw the handwriting on the wall with respect to lack of talent.
Regardless, great to see the gators go down.

Corch may be getting a little exposed now that Tebow is gone. Every person in America thought he was the second coming of Knute Rockne and John Heisman wrapped up in one. It is pretty easy to look like a genius when you have the best player in America basically running the offense for you on gameday. Just ask CVD. Herschel runs left, Herschel runs right, Herschel up the middle—first down. In Corch’s case it was Tebow runs left, Tebow runs right, Tebow up the middle (with an occasional pass to a wide open receiver ’cause the DBs are all in the box looking for the run)—first down. Now he is going to actually have to coach. Let’s see if he can really coach in the SEC. Long term, I’m betting “no.”

So what? Meyer won a BCS title with a mediocre offense led by Chris Leak and a stellar defense led by Jarvis Moss.

As bad as you guys think Meyer might be, he IS 4-1 against Richt. That is 2-0 without Tim as the starting QB. Heck, if memory serves, Tim barely played in the 2006 Florida/Georgia game

For the record Zook was 2-1 against Richt, with Richt arguably having his best teams of his coaching career during that period.

And the camera even caught him whispering into the kicker’s ear, then followed the kicker to the holder where he whispered into the holder’s ear.

I told my gf, ‘they’re going to fake it’ and ‘you should see this one fake they did where the snapper flipped it behind him, i don’t think they’d do that here, it’s too obvious, but it was cool’ …

knowing it was Les and watching the TO and the coach to kicker to holder whispers made it pretty obvious guys. If UF couldn’t see that, or didn’t pay attention, they deserved to have what happened

How in the hell does that ball bounce right up into his hands. You just know if we ran that the ball would have bounced backwards 10 yds to end the game.

They should have at least been flagged for celebration in the end zone after the TD. That would have been poetic justice.

After the game the sideline babe asked Miles how he felt about the “Mad Hatter” nickname.

He denied being “mad” and actually did not seem to be amused.

Neither was THEGENIUSURBANMEYER when he was asked about Miles in the press conference after the game. (“Next question”)

Mark Dantonio’s heart attack play even got Vladimir’s attention….didn’t work quite as well as for Sparty.

Remember when we used to think Steve Spurrier was a wild and crazy guy?

The bounce was very lucky, no doubt, and even luckier in this particular case that it was on a ‘lateral’ angle instead of a forward pass, but I think that particular fake play is the best of the fake plays.

Everything right up until the kicker makes his break right looks like a normal kick; what is the D supposed to key on? The rules protect the kicker so they have to stay back a little or, if they are going to try for a block, they have to aim in front of where the holder is. All the defensive momentum is heading in one direction at the wrong spot when they see it is a fake, and they have to change direction. Get a good pitch from the holder (imo, the hardest part, it is like a no-look pass in basketball) and a kicker with any speed at all is practically destined to get 3-4+ yards.

The interesting thing to me about Miles’ coaching….ah…philosophy? is that it appears Miles has never read the “conventional wisdom” book.

Two qb’s…can’t work, works for him…and last night pretty well.

always do the expected thing….Not him…seems, at least so far, to work pretty well.

Miles biggest problem is that his thinking, or lack of it, is outside the box everybody on tv wants to put coaches into.

He fools the announcers, which is always bad PR.

You know, something I have not seen written or heard talked about is that LSU was in the situation it was in in the first place because of a Miles brain cramp. When LSU scored the TD that put them into the lead earlier in the 4th quarter Miles went for 2 and failed. That gave LSU a 5 point lead. If Miles had just kicked the extra point then LSU would have been up by 6. In that situation when FLA scored to take the lead, because kicking the extra point would have only put them up by 2, Meyer goes for 2 and makes it, giving FLA a 3 point lead. Had Miles kicked the extra point on LSU’s previous score and led by 6 FLA would have had to kick for the single extra point to take the lead and would never have gone a for 2 point conversion. The net result would have been a 1 point lead for FLA and LSU would have won the game at the end with a field goal. LSU never would have had to try the all or nothing BS. Another Miles screw-up that turns out just fine for him.

I saw the game in Charles’ hotel room last night before we went home to Savannah.

    I can tell you this:

When you do research on your opponent, you understand his tendencies and it clues you in on how to beat him.

Sonny still likes the old TV show “Star Trek” and many times Uga and me would be playing in the den when the show came on.

Spock’s life was an empty series of percentage-based decisions, which works well among others who live similar conservative lives.

However, Captain Kirk used to drive Spock nuts with his unpredictable behavior and obviously, the Spock character describes Meyer very well.

So when the percentages are not in your favor, do the unpredictable and you will often beat Meyer.

When Coach Richt faces Meyer in 2010, Coach Richt should find his inner Captain Kirk, like he did in 2007.

Then he should apologize for it, then do it again in 2011.

This kind of stuff drives Meyer nuts.

    Les knows this.

    Russ.

The best part of the video is watching Corch signal 1st down so confidently.
The scary part is that there was no doubt in my mind that Miles was gonna run the fake, which means he is either getting predictable or I’m on the same wavelength as a psychopath.

I was watching it with a friend who’s a Florida fan and we were both calling for the fake. And that was before you could see Miles whispering to his kicker and holder. Telegraphed it all the way. And yet, they get the bounce, they get the lateral call (it was a lateral), and they get the first down. Amazing luck.

If you listened to Miles’s postgame interview, not only were they trying to get the first down … Miles thought they could have scored a TD on the fake but the bad flip hindered it.
