What’s wrong with an unsubstantiated charge or two? 24 hours ago, everyone in the media was sure King was at the center of some thefts of computer equipment.
It’s even money somebody ties King to the Lindbergh baby kidnapping in the next couple of weeks.

I understand the point you’re making, but this is a little different. It’s one thing for people to put the wrong dots together, it’s quite another for the girl to completely fabricate the story. Believe it or don’t believe it, but it certainly doesn’t look good.

I don’t know of any criminal allegations that do look good, but, call me an idealist, they don’t mean a damned thing without proof. Or at least they shouldn’t.

I agree with you, but they do mean something. They meant something when Roger Goodell suspended Ben Roethlisberger for six games. His charges weren’t proven either, but he was still disciplined.
I think Richt might (might, key word) handle this one the same way. Would he suspend King based on those charges alone? Doubtful. However, compound those charges with the failure to appear stuff, and suddenly it’s worse. Richt was already angry with King for his decision making…then bring the blackmail issue to the fold, and it really casts doubts on his decision making skills (and his degree of innocence/naivety).

Please note that the Steelers COACH did not suspend Roethlisberger. The NFL Commish decided to do that on his own. Do not use the Commish as an example of what a coach should do. Plus the allegations against Roethlisberger were much, much more serious.

Mayor, I wasn’t using the commish as an example of what Richt SHOULD do. I was using it as an example that sometimes, people are disciplined based on allegations, regardless of whether or not the allegations are ever proven in a court of law. Sometimes, people are punished simply on putting themselves in such a situation.
I’m not advocating that Richt punish King for this stuff, I’m just saying that I can see where it might be a factor.

Yes but if there is no criminal or civil case ongoing, what would CMR do? Would he have an obligation to do anything? Certainly he knew about or should have known about this complaint shortly after the alleged victim phoned it in on or about April 28, 2010. If he didn’t, he needs to replace his intel team with a competent network of people to keep him informed.
I would like to think that if Mark knew of allegations like this against one of his players that he would give more than a superficial look into it even if no criminal or civil case was ongoing.
The report phoned in by the alleged victim says that she deposited $300 into a B of A account. Aside from the usual ‘that was my $300, not hers’ (unless she made the $300 deposit by check), ‘it was a gift’ and if it wasn’t, ‘it’s been paid back’ by cash of course with no receipt, the main issue is regarding the alleged statements about naked pictures and video being used to avoid repayment of money is whether those statements are true or false.
While I have no problem with CMR’s Quote of the Day:

The claims made by this alleged victim, if those claims are true, demonstrate lack of responsibility, may be regarded by few/some/many to be an awful act and are something that we all should just be ashamed of.

I would like to give the football team the benefit of the doubt regarding these things, but when they’ve consistently proven themselves too ignorant or foolish to prevent other things from happening, why would this be any different?

Well, for starters why doesn’t Mark simply ask Caleb if the blackmail allegations are true?
If Caleb denies that they are true, Mark probably thinks his work is done because he’s done his damage control.
However, there is probably is someone outside the program, such as Samantha of the Red and Black or the young man who wrote the article in the first place, who will interview the woman who made the allegations so she can tell her side of the story.
If she says she made false allegations confirming Caleb’
s denial, end of story. If she doesn’t, Mark gets to do damage control.

I guess I’m missing something here. There’s no criminal complaint and no evidence that a crime took place. Why is this a matter worth pursuing by Mark Richt, the Red and Black or Adam’s house cat, for that matter?

I’ve wondered about that myself. If a UF alumni does pro bono work for a bunch of UF playas does that constitute improper benefit???? You got to hand it to the Gainesville legal system they will work with UF on anything up to and including class A felonies.

You know, for not paying a parking ticket on time, two games is pretty harsh, and it’s not a stretch to think that this could end up having a very negative impact on the team in the next two days.
Either Richt or someone above him has decided that there’s a new sheriff in town and that getting arrested period is going to result in an unpleasant outcome. For what it’s worth, Washaun Ealey was certainly lucky that his encounter with law enforcement happened before the sudden toughening of Butts-Mehre. After all, he only got one game for leaving the scene of an accident that he caused while driving with a suspended license (after being told by coaches not to drive, and also apparently leaving against the instructions of Parking Services employees). I’d say that’s a much bigger deal than Caleb not paying his ticket on time.

Say whatever you want, but we’re the only team in the nation that would have suspended him. This is a non-issue at any other school.
I’m beginning to think being so close to Atlanta has a lot to do with this. The scrutiny on UGA’s discipline is greater than at any other SEC school, namely because of our proximity to the AJC, by far the biggest paper in the South. And the strange thing is that our coach, despite what some people falsely think, is the strictest disciplinarian in the conference.

I like bashing the AJ-C as much as the next guy, but a lot of the blame for this has to fall on the fan base, too. There are a lot of people who are out for blood, regardless of the seriousness of the infraction.
All in all, it’s a pretty good indication that MR is worried about his level of support in Athens right now.

True. The thread yesterday had plenty of loons who wanted him kicked off the team. So congratulations, lynch mob, you have probably influenced a decision to suspend the only established sure-handed running back on the team. And yes, I’ve erased the Colorado fumble from my memory.

CMR needs to start limiting access, especially to the AJC and in particular Schultz. He is a douche. It seems like he has a major bone to pick with UGA/CMR. The FOIA being used to find out university punishment (and then putting it on the front page of the web site) is beyond stupid. I go to bed praying every day that that paper goes belly up while I’m asleep…or at the very lease they dump Bradly/Schultz…and yes Tucker (worthless as well).

Seeing that we now have enough for an all-penitentiary football team I think the punishment is appropriate. No, it’s not a big deal what he did but he is fully aware of what’s going on with the program and why there has to be higher standards. He has already been arrested once a few years ago for driving w/ a suspended license. I’m all for sending a tough message. Given the circumstances it’s pathetic he put himself in this situation. I’m all for suspensions for stupidity.

Yep…he’s back. Though he won’t be playing against Mississippi State this weekend, he’ll likely be ready for Georgia after their off weekend. Of course he’ll be ready for Georgia. And Demps will be healed up. And Brantley will be healed up. And during the off week the Jorts will install an offense no one in the country has seen. Oh joy…almost time for the WLOCP.

Do not give a damn for the AJC…a yellow liberal paper. So my argument about King has nothing to do with their view or any blogger. I’m not on the “lunatic fringe”, either.
Now why I would cut King. It is hard to run when you carry baggage all the time. Get’s in the way.
I’d cut him because I want that scholarhsip for next year. I’ve given the guy every opportunity to play for us and not be a distraction and cause me and the AD office to waste time on this kind of stupid crap. How many plays has he played the past two years? Tell us Senator. This is all about production if I was the coach. You see I lost a little respect and trust with this player. Seems to always be in trouble. How can I develop a game plan and factor him in when I do not know if he will be there. What if he gets arrested the night before a game. What if this happened this coming Saturday. See it is more than responsibility and maturing a kid. Hell we have coaches livelihoods on the line here as well as the running of an athletic department. But gee, I guess most mature adults can not see that, even if they are 23.
No I want that scholarship back since King does not seem to give a damn about it and his fellow players.

He played in 9 out of 12 last year and 4 out of the first 6 this year. And you should definitely blame him for missing those two games with an injury, because injuries are all about not caring. What a selfish prick. Tyrone Prothro didn’t care at all about playing football or his teammates or his scholarship. That’s why he decided to shatter his leg.

I agree Will. Who needs King, a kid who has proven he is a capable, SEC-caliber running back, when we could use his scholarship to recruit a 2-star kid out of Albany who bleeds red and black?

Here’s a hypothetical example in light of the earlier post about evaluating vs. developing talent.
How mad would you be if Ken Malcome comes in on Saturday and is dominant? You know, like doesn’t self-tackle himself like Carlton Thomas (once popularized by Richard Samuel) or isn’t just otherwise pedestrian/fumbles like Ealey and King.
I frankly would be pretty upset, especially with the debacle of redshirting of Knowshon in our past. Richt said in pre-season that Malcome just wasn’t quite ready and if he comes in and kills it, I’m just not gonna be very happy because it would show that we evaluated the talent just fine but are not deploying or developing it b/c of upperclassmen

Who would have expected Ealey and King to be as unproductive as they’ve been? Ealey averaged 95 yards a game from Vanderbilt on last year, and King closed strong. Neither had any fumble problems. I will not fault Richt or Bobo or anyone for playing them ahead of Malcom.

I won’t be surprised at all if Malcome looks great – who knows what is going on.
Remember last season v. LSU when Ealey’s redshirt was burned? He looked 10x better than anything we had seen up til then, and now he runs tentative and can’t hold on to the football. What a difference a year makes.

How mad would you be if Ken Malcome comes in Saturday on a crucial 3rd and 4 and completely whiffs on a block. Undoubtedly our fans which bitch and moan about wasting a RS on a kid who wasn’t ready. It’s a two way street.

Fair point, it would definitely suck if he came in and missed a key block. If he gets in, I hope he does well. And it’s true Vandy isn’t very good, so there’s a chance he could break out. I’ve just been frustrated with our running game (which our o-line does deserve a lot of the blame in my opinion) and have been underwhelmed by King, Ealey, and Thomas.

Not interested in the games he played or did not play. I want to know the plays. Injuries…some types you can play with and some you can not. He is a junior…where are his numbers. Where do you think he would be at Bama, Florida, LSU…you play with production or you are not playing. Durham and Sturdivant hung in there thru serious injuries and are productive. Do not see any suspensions or off field issues with those kind of players. Brantley for Florida played with cracked ribs this past weekend. Sometimes you have to play when you are injured. Big deal. The question is his scholarship and how productive it is. No fumble at Colorado, and Dawgs had a possible victory. But I guess when you dress out 72% of the time and you can not establish yourself as the back after two years you are entitled to being in trouble most of the time.

Also, yes, the fumble killed our chances. Also killing our chances: The D sucking, AJ getting cramps, Aaron’s pick, a slow start, a missed FG, and a bunch of other silliness that didn’t work. King’s wasn’t the only mistake of the night.

MY RANT. The officials in Walton County know who Caleb King Is & Knew where to find him. The APD forced their hand on this one. Everyone but the APD would have preferred to let ”Sleeping Dawgs” alone.
There is not another county in Ga. where misdemeanors (any minor offense) receive such press coverage. I find it difficult to believe it only applies to student athletes. It is time for UGA officials to find out what can be done to rectify the situation & get the APD to allow the University to have more input in how to deal with misdemeanor offenses by students. This profiling of students has gone on too long & is causing the APD to look foolish. Motor Scooter Offenses ?.

Do not believe he would start at Bama or Florida.
Compare him to other backs at UGA and let me know where is stands.
But if you think he is such a productive back, ask around other programs.

Let’s see here:
He’s averaged 4.8 YPC over his career (219 carries, 1,069 yards).
In 2009 (and so far in 2010) he’s averaged 5.2 YPC (158 carries for 822 yards).
Knowshon, by comparison, averaged 5.6 in 2008 and 5.38 in 2007.
Perhaps the poor productivity is more reflective of the issues facing the offensive line in the past couple of years and not so much the backs themselves. The comparisons to other backs aren’t exactly made in a vacuum…and as good as Searles has been advertised, that hasn’t really translated to dominant run blocking.
Would he start at Bama? No. Neither would any other back in the country.

You have an opportunity to drop a scholarship on a player that has never performed to his all star rating. He has one year left. Maybe he can mirror the end of last year. You play because you can…not now and then.
I understand Durham and Sturdivant did not play all those years. They did not jeopardize their scholarship, and managed to keep their butts out of trouble. They fought and played their way back. They generally start. They are not suspended.
But go ahead be satisfied with this kind of player and the record the last two years.

I, for one, am excited to see Malcome play. I hope he gets a decent amount of play time this weekend. Comparing HS highlight videos, he reminds me of a thicker, stronger Knowshon. Obviously, he could be a huge bust. But he could also be the starter by the end of the season. And if there was ever an opportunity for a young RB to have a breakout game, it’s against Vandy’s rushing defense.

I, for one am still waiting for a Georgia running back to look….well like an SEC running back…if it is Boo, well, that’s fine. (He’s only a freshman.)
It is historically incomprehensible to me we don’t have a top flight running back.

I don’t think he has the breakaway speed of Knowshon however I like the way Malcome keeps his legs moving after getting hit. He reminds me of the SC running back.

Yeah, he doesn’t have breakaway speed in the secondary, but Knowshon really didn’t have that either. It looks like he has a good burst though and he does a good job of making people miss. Lateral movement seems to be pretty smooth. Looking forward to seeing him run this week.
