Mystery to me

Once we get past the disappointment after the season ends (well, some of us, anyway), all we’re going to be left with is puzzling out why this team struggled with becoming bowl eligible.

    – Ealey’s fumble on the goal line at USC
    – Bobo’s bad call on 3rd down against Arkansas
    – Ealey’s fumble on the goal line at MSU
    – King’s fumble at Colorado
    – Commings not falling on the ball against Florida

Just five plays. Now reverse their outcomes. What do you think Georgia’s record is?

Would the time, money, and effort involved in finding a new coach make you feel confident that these five plays would be reversed? Beats me, honestly. That’s why they pay McG the big bucks.

      Yes.

The proof is in the pudding. We’ve been battling the same demons for 4-5 years and they persist. It transcends players so it must be coaching. What other variable could it be?

Richt will have 2011 to “make it happen”. I expect the D to improve, again. We’ll see about the O as we know Murray will improve but won’t have Durham or Greene.

If no sustantial improvements are made then no one can defend our coach.

The bottom line to me is that I don’t think Richt is having fun anymore.

Solid points all around. We’re in for some tough decisions.

NO! Who would we hire (realistically)? I am as frustrated as anyone, but of the 5 plays you listed 4 were player error. You may say “well then we must not be recruiting the right players and that falls on coaches”. But coming into the year we all thought Ealey and King would have big years, not memorable (well forgettable) fumbles. As far as the fumble against Florida, Commings said after the game something like, we are told over and over that if we are in a crowd just fall on the ball. He admitted it was his mistake. I think Richt deserves another year…Garner and Searels not so much.
To answer your other question, if all those plays went our way I think we would be sitting at 8-2. The 2 being Carolina and Arkansas.

I’m not so sure better S & C won’t help out RG and SS. The linemen need to be A LOT more flexible than they are. Honestly, if Richt doesn’t bring in some help for Van Halanger then I believe next yr will most certainly be his last…

Caleb got hit during a handoff. That one was on the line.

I don’t want to pile on Bobo, but actually the called play was a draw with the linemen feinting passblocking. Trouble was the Colorado D-linemen aren’t stupid and ignored the pass fake knowing UGA had to run the ball in that situation. So they went straight after the ball carrier. The guy who caused the fumble said as much after the game. Galactically stupid playcall in that situation by the OC.

Griff I think DN is saying that McGarity is in for some tough decisions after 2011, not this year.

Richt may have some tough decisions after this season relating to asst coaches but I don’t look for him to replace anyone.

And if you think that we should continue down the same path of mediocrity with the same problems plaguing us year and year out, then I’m sorry to tell you that you are in the minority. Georgia fans have a right to demand more from their program and considering all the fundamental advantages we have over 9.5 of 10 other schools, they should.

Personally I think that another year like this one in ’11 will force Richt into retirement. He’s not the kind of person to drag a school/program through a protracted battle of egos.

Griff, apparently you and I are not smart enough to realize, coaches are to blame for all the mistakes on the field of play, and the Athens Police/UGA Campus police are to blame for all the mistakes players make off the field. This is America, adult men over the age of 18 are not to be held accountable.

I look at the national stats and think we should pluck Holgoresen from Okie St., and demote Bobo back to mere QB coach, but let someone else call the actual plays.
Aaron Murray in a faster-paced offense, rolling out more? Could definitely help offset the loss of Green (plus I have nightmares thinking back to what the offense looked like with no Green and Bobo calling plays.)

We need to sacrifice a chicken …. and move forward. It’s apparent that the Mad Hatter has already done so..and more. I doubt CMR will give up what Les has in order to win games. That might mean we need to recruit.
      just sayin’.

To answer the question as posed, UGA wins at least 4 out of those 5 games and maybe all 5. Current record would be 9-1 or 10-0.

    Senator,
I don’t feel I should even have to mention this but ‘regression to the mean’

Last year we were talking about how a team so statistically hideous could win as many games as we actually did. Now we’re wondering how a team who seems to dominate on paper could lose as many as it has.

Just nature balancing itself is all.

  3. The stats are misleading because we REALLY fattened up on 2 cupcakes, Vandy, and Tenn.

Also, we can talk as much as we want about what if this play or that play went differently, but:

    1) They didn’t.
    2) It wouldn’t guarantee a win even if they had gone differently.
    3) Every football team makes mistakes. Good ones overcome those mistakes.

The fact remains that we have a lackluster, predictable, non-elite OC. If we want any hope of being truly elite in the modern game, we need an innovative, elite level OC.

Yeah, LSU is 8-1 and was 13 people away from losing to one of those “cupcakes.” Not to mention LSU gave up more and scored less on Vandy – a Vandy team that SC didn’t exactly roll over either. Not the typical “cupcake” status one might think.

Somebody like Dan Mullen, whose offense ripped off three less touchdowns against Florida than Bobo’s did.

I don’t think it as simple as the type of offense being run at UGA or the play calling alone, although that may be part of it. If the decision is made to relieve Bobo as OC (and I am not saying that is the answer) the thing to do is get the best OC from the NFL possible, sort of an offensive CTG, IMO. If you try to switch to the spread without the right personnel we would have all the same growing pains we went through on D this year only they would be on O.

Dear God, please don’t let this off season turn into the circus that last year was.

It was bad enough listening to idiots clamoring for David Pollack or Dick LeBeau to be brought in as DC. Now we have to listen to those same people recommending we bring in Mike Leach or Peyton Manning as the next OC? Hey, don’t scoff at Manning, we’re UGA. We have the money to make him an offer he can’t refuse.

My first choice (if it were to happen) would be Mike Mularkey of the Falcons. If not him, Falcons QB coach Bill Musgrave.

Before the season I thought 2010 was going to be a great year for the Dawgs. I really thought we had a legit shot at the MNC. Ten (10!) starters returned on O. Terrific kickers. The D was definitely going to improve since CWM was gone. But it all fell apart right from the start. I like CMR and appreciate all he’s done for UGA. But I just don’t see him as a top coach any longer. He’ll be back in 2011, but his organization has some serious problems.

If our defense makes even half of the third-down stops needed at key points, we win a whole lot more games this season.

Not even that. See the #1 post on this thread by D.N. Nation above. If only 5 plays are different the Dawgs are 9-1 or 10-0.
