Jimmy Sexton’s wet dream

I’m still wrapping my head around two pieces of data I was exposed to last night, Auburn’s counter-proposal to Gus Malzahn…

… which was supposedly substantial enough for Malzahn to turn down Vandy’s first offer, and then the confirmation from the Washington Post that Vandy went all in as a response to Auburn’s raise.

… Vanderbilt had reportedly offered Malzahn a contract that would pay him close to $3 million per year. He has verbally accepted the job, the source said, but had yet to sign a contract.

Sure, if I were Malzahn, I’d wait and see how badly Auburn wants to hang on to my services.  If their first offer was Monte Kiffin-type money, who knows what they’re ready to throw out now?  Play my cards right and maybe they’ll name me co-head coach, with a salary to match.

Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration.  But if the above is real, that offer to make him the second highest paid coaching assistant in the country, along with Vanderbilt’s numbers (which would pay Malzahn much more than his current boss is making), should tell you that we’re moving into a period that seems destined to fulfill all the crazy promise of what the new TV money would bring to the SEC when we saw what was spent on Kiffin’s and Chizik’s staffs as they were assembled a couple of seasons ago.

The irony that Auburn may be victimized by the same spendthrift philosophy it helped put in motion shouldn’t be lost on anyone.

How crazy has it gotten?  Consider:

  • As I said, Auburn’s offered Malzahn the kind of money to stay that sounded stratospheric when it was paid to Monte Kiffin.  But at least in Kiffin’s case, you could (sort of) justify it by pointing to his résumé and noting that he took a pay cut to leave the NFL.  Malzahn is five years removed from Springdale High.
  • If Vandy wins the bidding war, the head coach in Nashville will be making about a third more than the head coach in Knoxville.  In fact, at around $3 million per year, Malzahn will be in the top four or five best paid coaches in the SEC.  Which means he’ll likely be in the top fifteen nationally.
  • New coaching hires at Florida and Vanderbilt being compared to each other.  Let that one percolate in your brain for a minute.  Along with the fact that some will judge the Commodores to have made the better hire.

If Vandy’s a serious player now, the sky really is the limit on coaching compensation in the SEC.  On second thought, forget my header.  If you’re Jimmy Sexton, that’s better than sex.

Local buzz is 7 years / $21 million. If he’s still there after 2 years then he must suck.

Can’t wait to tell these Vol fans that Vandy has invested in a better football coach than they did. lol

Gus will take Vandy’s offer. Why turn down $3M per year and your own show at a great school? Of course, you won’t get the top tier athletes. However, Malzahn has shown he can score with just about any kind of squad. I am actually really happy for Vandy. When you look over Malzahn’s career, it is really amazing how he has ignited a change in offensive philosophy all the way up to the NFL. Vandy will have the #1 offense next year in the SEC.

The Aubbies need to ask themselves which coach was most responsible for their success this season, Chizik or Malzahn. One data point for them: Chizik without Malzahn 5-19; Chizik with Malzahn 21-5.

If Auburn was smart enough, and cold-blooded enough, it would fire Chizik and make Malzahn head coach.

It’ll be fun watching Auburn next year without Cam-Cam and the only coach who could boast of a triple digit IQ.

Live in Nashville versus Auburn, no state income tax, little pressure to win titles, very few off-field problems, and no booster interference. Better strike while the iron is hot Gus, this is a no-brainer!

The thing with Malzahn and Vandy doesn’t sound all that outrageous if you think about it. Vandy is a school that needs a certain type of coach more than other schools: the type of coach who can generate wins out of decent but not usually great players. Many of us think Malzahn is that kind of guy. Vandy can’t spend money on a lot of things other schools will/can spend money on, but apparently a few well heeled alumni can pony up a coaches salary. This may not even be their best offer. Vandy needs Malzahn worse then Auburn (hell, they’ll go buy some players and be fine), so it wouldn’t completely surprise me. I guess it will change the pay scale some, but a little of this is that Vandy is just a special case.

    Dear Vanderbilt<
I am looking for a job.
I used to play playground football and drawed all kinds of neat little quardruple reverses.and other plays in the dirt with my finger. I once made up a play where the whole team acted like they were carrying a football and the QB faked the statue of liberty play. Of course, we scored.
We beat our archrivals in Ms. Smith's fourth grade class by 84 points one day. Imagine beat UT by that much…… hmmmm… Do I have your attention now?
Now now…. I know what you are thinking. I am worth at least $4-6 million a year. But I dont want that. I want $100 million a year whether I show up or not. Seems like the deal of a lifetime compared tot he screwing you are getting from Malzahn.

    Thanks….
