Setback? What setback?

Can somebody explain why this is a problem for Christian LeMay?

Four-star quarterback Christian LeMay of Matthews, N.C., has been ruled ineligible for the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Myrtle Beach, S.C. LeMay practiced with Georgia recently, which made him ineligible to participate in a high school all-star game. This is the latest setback for LeMay, who did not play as a senior following a suspension from his high school.

I mean, he’s disqualified from some trivial high school all-star game that’s no doubt put on primarily for the benefit of recruitniks, but the reason he’s disqualified is because he practiced at the school he intends to enroll at next month.  In other words, it’s all systems go for the kid and Georgia.

Now, maybe it’s a shame that Rivals has one less player to opine about (or sell subscriptions about), but I don’t think that’s LeMay’s problem at this point.

Other than the fact that I’m sure he’d love to have played in it, I think it’s just an example of lazy sportswriting.

Of course, for a guy who hasn’t played in a year, getting a look at some actual live competition probably would have been helpful, seeing as how he’s pretty much assured of taking a redshirt this fall. It’s pretty much just practices and G-Day from here on in.

Does anyone out there expect this kid’s career to be anything more than a drama-filled trainwreck?

While I agree that this particular incident is ridiculous, and in fact, I believe that all of these pimp-training sessions for 2nd-rate “agents,” a.k.a. “High School All-Star Games” are ridiculous, this kid’s decision-making gives one the idea that he will be totally inept at leading an SEC football program.

The UGA program is an absolute tire-fire right now, and not one single person associated with it can seem to get out of their own way, unless, of course, they are on the payroll at an SEC rival.

    • Which decision are you referring to? The one that got him in trouble in high school, which you have to admit is a fairly commonplace occurrence, or the one in which he accepted Georgia’s invite to attend practice?

I’m always amazed at people’s confidence in predicting how 18-year old kids whom they’ve never met are going to turn out in life. I guess that’s what the Internet was invented for.

I’m with you, Senator. If you believe what’s on the internet, certainly the kid made a bad decision in high school, but it certainly isn’t something that merits writing off his future collegiate career as a “drama-filled trainwreck”. Hey, Cynical, you do realize that in admitting the high school all-star game bit is “a bit ridiculous” you essentially discount one of only two incidents this kid’s been involved with, right? So, the one incident that gets him suspended in high school means his entire college career is doomed?

Say what you will about Mark Richt (and you have), I’ll trust the fact that he never wavered in his desire to bring Lemay on board. Richt has missed on a few players character-wise, but I think his overall record in this department is pretty good. We’ve had arrests, sure, but the overwhelming majority of them have been for typical college stuff. The rest were dealt with. I’ll trust Richt on this one.

I’m cynical of folks that use the word cynical as a noun instead of an adjective.

I am going to ignore OCIA’s response, which is pretty much what it deserves.

I would say you are right on about the damage being to the Newbergian Weasels, and I would assume LeMay’s star count will drop accordingly.

Here’s a teaser for the recruiting afficianadoes out there. How did Willie Williams do in this game? He was, according to the Newbergians, the best player in the south when he came out.

I understand being cynical is your thing, but seriously, if I were to not watch the team or follow any of the news and strictly base my opinion of the state of UGA football solely on your comments, I would think we were Tennessee or something. Lighten up!

I don’t think you can see that everyone’s heads(sic) aren’t in the sand because your head is so far up your…

Anyway, it goes to show just how stupid it was of Rivals to make this into a negative story. Anyone have any clue where the Offense Defense people keep their eligibility requirements? That’s what makes this so stupid. The kid did what he was supposed to do…he showed up at UGA ready to go when the coaches asked him to. Heck, it might even be the coaches’ fault….they might not be privy to the O-D eligibility standards either.

I think the point is, who flipping cares? It is a shame the kid can’t play if he wanted to do so…it’s probably a fun time…but to act like it is some sort of larger statement about the kid or the program is just stoopid.

It’s only a “setback” from the high school football perspective. It shouldn’t impact his future career at UGA even a little bit. It’s a shame that he lost his senior season and, yeah, the special showcase games are fun for the players. But I’m sure he’s totally focused on the future. The high school football thing has been over for awhile now. For the record, I don’t think LeMay has done anything that would indicate a disappointing college career.

Personally I think it’s a bit telling about the quality of these recruiting sites that the LeMay story is on the Mississippi State Bulldogs page, not UGA.

Way to demonstrate insider information and expertise, guys.

Not a set back? Did you talk to Lemming? I think not!

Setback??? Lemay is getting a college scholarship and an 8 month head start on college (compare that to 99% of high school graduates – who won’t begin college until Aug/Sep). Plus, how many other HS seniors are training with an sec bowl-bound team? A couple guys who followed this scenario were named Murray and Stafford. I think the kid has his head on straighter than most adults.

That’s right and what a bozo that Bobo guy is for only putting up 3 times as many points on the vaunted Jacket defense as Air Force did, Bobo’s lucky he’s got a defense to bail him out, wait a minute didn’t our defense give up 34 points to Tech to Air Force’s 7? Ah, never mind, since when do the Bobo basher’s care about facts they know from their vastly superior intellects that they can always call a better game than he can.

If I was Lemay I would have thought NOT playing this year would have disqualified me from any stupid All-Star games so I’ll do whatever I want.
I didn’t play any either, can I play in the all-stargame?

Doug, +1 Not to mention that Lemay can’t get a good education in the SEC!

Ok, so I’m sure that the coaches wouldn’t let the kid practice if it was an NCAA recruiting violation. But doesn’t that strike you as something that would be a recruiting violation? Letting a kid practice with the team before he is enrolled or signed a letter of intent? That just strikes me as odd. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad he is doing it and I think it is awesome, just a little strange.

Green, Lemay is an early entry and will start classes next month. Man, off season already sux! Watched the Tech game, sucked. Watched the Falcons, sucked. I just hope the Liberty Bowl is better. It would really suck to suck vs UCF.

Tech lost.. game was fine by my standards. Falcons did blow though. Still a victory next week and Falcons are champs. Saints will be a wild card though.

And why exactly does tech losing = “sucks”? I quite enjoyed it. Anyone that pulls against the Air Force Academy must be a communist. 😉

Cynical, you are really getting to be a buzzkill and a bore. If you are so distraught with the Georgia program right now, why follow them? You obviously don’t enjoy it, go be a Georgia Southern fan or something.

I didn’t pull against the USAFA and I am glad they won, but the game was awful, worse than watching paint dry. I was sounding like Captain Obvious, come on, somebody make a play. Tech heard me and dropped the ball, twice! Pretty bad when fumbles are the most exciting plays of the night.
