‘You know, Mike, Bobby Lowder really acts like the Auburn Tigers are his professional football franchise.’

Somehow, we’re supposed to believe that the Bobby Lowder of this story…

With the Auburn football job open in December 1992, Mike Lude, then the university’s athletic director, interviewed a stellar group of candidates: North Carolina’s Mack Brown, Southern California’s Larry Smith and West Virginia’s Don Nehlen.

But Lude and the hiring committee were most impressed by a long-shot candidate, Terry Bowden, the little-known coach at Samford in Birmingham, Ala.

Years later, Lude found out why Bowden, who ultimately won the job, was so prepared for the interview. Bowden told him that the Auburn superbooster Bobby Lowder, who had sat in on other candidates’ interviews, had prepped Bowden in his hotel room the night before his meeting with Auburn officials…

has morphed into a quasi-radioactive figure who is barely known by the people running Auburn’s football program.

“In my two years there, Mr. Lowder has done some great things for Auburn, but there hasn’t been that much contact,” Chizik said. “I’m very appreciative of all he’s done for Auburn University. Just don’t see him much. He is busy with a lot of things going on in the business world.”

Athletic Director Jay Jacobs, who has avoided the news media in the week before the championship game, did not return a call seeking comment. The Auburn assistant coach Trooper Taylor said he only knew Lowder’s name.

“I’ve never even met him,” Taylor said. “I couldn’t even tell you what he looks like or any of that. I’ve seen buildings with his name on it, but I don’t know him at all.”

That’s what loosing a billion dollars will do for you. Nobody can remember your name. Everybody who believes Trooper Taylor raise their hands, the guy just oozes integrity.

I have no doubts that Bobby has a lot less power than he once had, heck he is spending what money he has left trying to stay out of jail, but isn’t he still Trustee for life at Auburn or has the bank failure made them declare him dead?

Gene Cheatsatit was hand picked because he was a former Auburn guy who knew how the deals were made. To the average fan he seemed to be a strange hire to say the least but to the big money boosters he was well known. This whole deal smells to high heaven but the NCAA can’t find it’s butt with both hands and the SEC doesn’t really care as long as they get their Champ abd their money.

Absolutely disgusting that a man would interfere with his university’s athletic department like that!

Trooper Taylor sounds like one of the ‘plumbers’ referrng to Nixon.

An Auburn alum and friend of mine told me years ago that the AU fans hated Lowder, but that AU needed his checks. Like the old Billie Holliday song, “when you got money you got lots of friends, hanging round your door, when the money’s gone and all the friendships end, they don’t come round no more.”

In the NC game and the AD is ducking the media. Everything has to be legit at AU. I wonder if he’s going to try the I didn’t know defense.

    • that’s exactly what this is. Setting the stage for when it comes out that Lowder paid Cecil, or something along those lines.
“Oh we didn’t know Lowder was even still around, I’ve never seen him, I just knew his name.”

I’m starting to feel that nobody actually knows anything in that podunk town.

The AU saga is not over. Not by a long shot.

Auburn sucks. Go Ducks! I’ve never pulled against the SEC team in a BCS championship game, not even when it was Florida…until now. And I also predict that if the Tigers/Eagles/Plainsmen whatevers do win tomorrow night that the Associated Press voters will award their MNC to TCU.

That would be golden, but let’s don’t give up on the Ducks yet.

Exactly my position H-Town Dawg, this will be the first SEC team I have pulled against in a bowl. I am having no problem with it because I don’t consider The aU a member of the SEC any longer. I have kicked them out of my fantasy SEC league so I can feel better about the Dawgs being in the SEC.

The old “I don’t want to be a member of a club that would have (me) The aU as a member” applies here. They are dirty, filthy even. And it isn’t just an incident here, scummy is institutionalized on The Plains.
