State of the art

Via Dawg Post, assistant AD Josh Brooks takes you on a tour of the new Butts-Mehre facilities.  What they’re able to do with computers now is particularly impressive.

Nice digs, fellas.

I can’t view the first video but I read the article in the R&B and all I can say is WOW!!! I don’t know if Coach T knows much about S&C but he certainly seemed to be a progressive thinker in terms of his vision with the video aspect. Hopefully he will bring that same kind of forward thinking to the S&C program.

A couple of thoughts concerning the article….
I find it interesting that Georgia is the first to go 100% Apple. I have a Mac and BookPro and love them. Really everybody I know that converts is always happy. It will be interesting to see over the next couple of years how many other programs start going with Apple.

It is nice to hear that Georgia is 10 years ahead in something. Again kudos to Coach T and really Damon too for funding this given all the talk of UGA spending less on the program than others and Damon being a bottom line guy.

The use of iPads is an interesting concept. I wonder if there are any security issues at hand here? Anyway the whole BM expansion, renovation, etc. is truely amazing. These guys are getting a free top of the line education at a beautiful institution and get to use state of the art facilities and technologies. No wonder 4 & 5 star guys are lining up to sign that letter of intent.

    Wow again…I am blown away!!

Yes I can see some security issues, too. What happens if a player’s iPad is stolen and gets in the wrong hands? Could completely ruin a game plan for years!

At 3:21, he says that UGA’s coaches can look at video of Auburn’s practices. How do we get video of their practices and why does Auburn allow this? Do they also have access to video of our practices?

All that new “UGA has the most football profit but low % spending on football ” stuff that just came out was actually for the 2009 football season, right?

If thats true, wouldn’t that mean all the spending on this project will show up on next year’s report for the 2010 season? So, if I heard $40M correctly, that means UGA’s actually one of the highest spenders for the current period.

*WARNING: GAAP ACCOUNTING CONTAINED HEREIN: not to get too accounting-nerdy, but the $40M probably won’t show up next year. It’s all but certain that most of these improvements are booked as capital expenditures and not expenses. I’d bet the report just picks up direct expenses, of which the depreciation for the new building will begin to show up as it begins to be amortized, but the full amount of the expenditures likely will not.

Correct and much of the facility specific outlays (building/structure) can be amortized for as much as 20yrs or more resulting in only an incremental $1-2M annual outlay for $40M. The computers, whirlpools, etc will be depreciated over much shorter periods based on useful life assumptions.

Ok how many of the GT Nerd Herd are already working to hack our new system? I like the idea that the players are getting the IPads for use at home, it seems we have had a hard time getting them to view film at BM on their own time. If we could just get our film to play like Madden then we would be the best prepared team in college football.

Why does it just seem logical that in a few months there will be an iPad scandal with the football team?

Of course. “Additionally, 60 scholarship football players will receive iPads this semester to be able to watch film outside of the football complex as well.”

I asked before on this site about their “film”. What I thought all along. Way outdated. That is why I said a few months ago that some high schools were better than the Dawgs.
Good to see this football program beginning to do somethings right. S&C. Video update on games, practice, and S&C. You have to break it down, study it, overlay it, and put your personnel in certain sets and see where they go, and etc.
Now let’s see what we do with the Big Dawgs in the O line. They need a new master who puts some bite into them and takes the leash off in games.

It looks amazing. The only part that still has me scratching my head after actually seeing it would be the turf field. Beyond literally walking through plays, what in the heck can they accomplish in there? It would be a challenge just to have the entire team in that room and still have enough space to walk through a play. With the amount of money we dumped into the expansion, would it have really taxed us that much to put some more money in and extend the thing out another thirty yards or so where we’d at least have 40 or 50 yards to work with? I know that the indoor practice facility is still a dream of ours, but why didn’t they just go ahead and do it with this project? Auburn’s got a 50 yard building, and it seems to suit their needs well enough.

I believe the option was indoor practice field or facility expansion. Not both. Plus, other facilities need(ed) to be updated ( and baseball) and Damon didn’t want to dump money for everything all at once.
