Georgia post-NSD roundup

A few things that got my attention from yesterday:

  • Ray Drew had this question for his new head coach:  ‘Coach, once I’m on campus, can I keep recruiting for the next year’s class?’
  • Yes, the puppy that committed with Isaiah Crowell is named Uga.
  • Mark Richt rededicates himself to competition“They know they have to earn it. They really feel like they can make an impact at the University of Georgia and that they can do it sooner than later. I think everybody better hook it up and get ready to compete because we are not giving anybody a 100 percent guarantee. Everybody has to make sure that they earn it.”
  • David Ching notes that Richt signing seven of the top ten players in the state is unprecedented for him.
  • Another sign that Richt is all in with this class:  Jay Rome will get a shot to play at what is arguably the deepest position on the team.
  • The coaches are keeping things in perspective: “This hopefully will give us some positive momentum,” Bobo said, “and we need to keep that going.”
  • Speaking of Bobo, he’s the subject of my favorite story from the recruiting trail.

… But a couple weeks ago, when Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome announced for Georgia, Bobo called that probably the best he’s felt since the day Matt Stafford committed.

Ironically, Bobo had lunch that day with former teammate and old friend Kirby Smart.

“We didn’t talk,” Bobo said with a grin. “We just sort of sat in silence.”

Speaking of Uga, a friend at the Vet school says he may not make it to the end of the month. He’s in bad shape. Tech continues to play off their class by explaining that their high academic standards is why they don’t get the top players although it’s doesn’t seem to bother Stanford or Notre Dame not to mention such intellectuals as Rueben Houston and Reggie Ball.

You do have to chuckle at the thought of Smart and Bobo having lunch, especially in light of the many recruiting battles between the two of them. For this season, besides Pagan, Bobo had the upper hand. Well I guess that means the next lunch is on Smart.

I’m loving this on Crowell, turn up the heat on Washaun already coach:

‘”I wouldn’t be shocked to see him run that rock in the dome against Boise State, on the opening play if he does what he’s supposed to do,” Richt said on ESPNU shortly after Crowell’s announcement.’

Yep. We had heard it was there. We took a few minutes from work and drove down to the Florida line. Closer to Tallahassee and Gainesville than Athens. But it is there. The Wall of Recruits. Some thought the wall could not be rebuilt. Amazing how Coach Richt and Company put that wall up. Damn good job Coaches , staff, and the 2011 recruits.

When we have Aron White, Orson Charles and Jay Rome (not to mention Figgens and Lynch), why don’t we put some packages together where we can get 2 or even 3 of them on the field at the same time? That guy Hernandez at UF was pretty much a TE, but they used him in the slot all the time. I’d love to see those guys get plenty of playing time.

Figgens has officially been moved to FB, so that clears up at least one TE spot. I think that we see Orson play more of the “Hernandez” role this year. Slot receiver, flexed out wide, etc.

This class stands out to me for it’s home-grown loyalty to UGA. These guys have Dawg pride to begin with and it will take them all a long way. The out of state guys won’t be lonely either and will supply as much juice to the gravy as anybody. Yep, too much can’t be said for the character of this class and what it will do when added to the waiting athletes who have already earned the title “Dawg”.

Hope the cheerleading and intra-organization keeps them building during the summer. They will need to put some smoke on it to better the Boise St summer work ethic. Hope S&C has a big summer plan.

    SIC’EM DAWGS!!
