    As to the Hatfields/McCoys stuff… yes, this is just one more example of how the SEC West is a truly embarrassing collection of schools.

    They are all very poorly academically ranked. They are all states that are among the poorest in the country. They are all lacking in basic ethical controls found at most universities.

    Just sad, backwards places, and it’s a growing detriment to UGA that its name is affiliated with such groups.

      Before one starts slandering major universities it is might be a good idea to know a few facts. There are literally thousands of colleges in the US. There are over three hundred fifty colleges that one might classify as major academic institutions. The latest edition of the US News and World report college rankings has Bama rated at 79 (tied with Baylor and Michigan State) and Auburn rated at 85. UGA is rated at 56. Florida is rated at 53. Let’s not go off half-cocked and start saying that because the fanbases of Bama and Auburn (most of whom never set foot inside a classroom) are nuts or that because the tail is wagging the dog in their athletic departments that this somehow means that the universities are “very poor academically.” The facts do not bear that out. Like it or not those schools are only rated slightly below UGA academically. I know a lot of folks who are very intelligent and well educated who went to Auburn and Bama. A friend and classmate of mine at UGA used to be the Dean of the Auburn College of Business. In fact, there is a lot of inbreeding among the various universities of the SEC and the South in general. I haven’t done an analysis but I would venture a guess that UGA has professors that went to both of those institutions either as undergrads or for grad school and that Bama and Auburn each have a number of UGA grads on their respective faculties as well. P.S. Since we are talking academics, the search is now on for a new Chancellor of the University System of Georgia. I have it on good authority that Mike Adams is NOT being considered.

        And, let’s also remember that if not for Zell Miller and HOPE, Georgia would be ranked much lower than we are. Georgia wasn’t always the school that it is today, and we have every right to be proud of what our school has accomplished. That’s not to say that gains aren’t being made at Auburn, Alabama, LSU, et al. In fact, I’d say that outside of Vanderbilt, there’s really no room for anyone in the SEC to look down on anyone else. Except for South Carolina. They’re just awful.

    Would an intrastate war be considered a civil war? Auburn fans could be the confederacy and Alabama fans could be the double confederacy. A bloody landwar would ensue. There would be an unprecedented involvement of tigers, elephants, eagles and something like red bacteria floating in the ocean in tactical combat.

      In Oregon they call the rivalry between state schools the civil war. In alabama, I think it’s more like ‘dog eat dog’. When you celebrate the mnc by throwing TP over a couple trees it’s hard to believe someone could come up with a way to skulk even lower.

        Actually, a rarely seen documentary was made about the 1981 Iron Bowl and it featured some fan interaction prior to the game (link below).

        The title is a reference to the famous Vulcan statue in Birmingham.

    My brother whom is a Dawg fan like myself, lives in birmingham and he said “At least when these idiots shoot each other after the iron bowl they aren’t dumb enough to confess on the radio, usually. I think that if Auburn doesn’t get sanctioned by the NCAA soon, there may be riots in the streets up here. The bammers are livid that the barners bought a nc and they just are about to lose it, literally. That is really why this happened. They took the sheen off if sabans nc so quick and under such circumstances that they cannot take it. Add to that the blowing of a 24-0 lead and I’m living in a powder keg over here and it may be more than trees that end up dead. If auburn could just get caught red handed it would calm things down a bit.”

    I only took one Psych class during my undergrad days at UGA, but the entire rivalry seems to me to boil down to what Freud called the “narcissism of small differences”. YMMV.

    You just can’t understand athletic acrimony unless you either live, or have lived in Alabama.

    Georgia fans especially have no basis to understand this situation since there are many, many more Georgia fans than fans of Georgia’s only in-state rival, Tech.

    I lived in Alabama for 15 years. Frankly I am not even surprised at the attempt by a Bama fan to poison the Toomer’s Corner trees.

    Folks this has been going on for almost 100 years….the difference is that it is easier to know about individual incidents.

    Alabama has more “Walmart Alumni” than Auburn, and the most outrageous behavior has always come from people who did not attend either school.

    If a Georgia co-ed marries a Tech man, at the wedding there are jokes and kidding and general hilarity.

    If a Bama grad marries an Auburn girl nobody comes to the wedding.
    The children of this union are said to be spawn of a mixed marriage.
    And if you don’t think folks take this seriously you are just uninformed.

    Tommy’s suggestion above that this situation is less important than the Arabs vs Israel may have some validity in states other than Alabama.

    Many Auburn and Alabama fans do mix and mingle, but there is always a visible line of demarcation in any mixed gathering.

    The surprising thing is that more people are not aware of this.

        i lived in bama for 5 years. sj3 speaks the truth.
        the first day of class (4th grade) the very first question i was ever asked was “who ya for”. after i figured out what they were getting at i just randomly said auburn. from that point on i had cut myself off from being friends w/ about 80% of the school. they just wouldn’t even talk to me.
        it was the weirdest thing.

    Having recently moved from Montgomery after ten years exiled there, my experience was this. A person is expected to declare for Alabama or Auburn, period. Alumni of Troy, South AL or any other state school will refer to themselves like this, “I went to Troy, but I pull for (fill in the blank)”. When a fan or alumnus of an out-of-state school reveals this fact, you are left to a limited social circle of outcasts. Most of the “fans” that I know are not so different than the Dawgs I know.
