There’s really no other way to categorize what Richt did with the Crowell-in-the-backfield recruiting stunt as anything other than a violation, but note McGarity’s hair-splitting:
… Per McGarity’s letter, “Coach Richt knew that the team could not use equipment or run a play to create a tryout activity but did not not check with the Compliance Office beforehand about the offensive alignment.” [Emphasis added.]
The Bulldogs asked for a ruling from the SEC regarding the matter and were told that the formation was indeed a violation of an NCAA bylaw aimed at restricting “game day simulation” for visiting prospects.
UGA hopes the violation will be considered secondary in nature.
“UGA does not believe a recruiting advantage was gained as the PSA’s mother has stated that her son knew he was going to attend UGA since he was a young child,” McGarity’s letter stated.
I guess now he knows about the offensive alignment.
6-7 seasons will do that to a coach.

UPDATE: This tremor was so brief that none of us felt it.

I wonder if it’d be a violation if instead they had Washaun driving a scooter across the practice field being trailed by a UGA cop? “This is all it’ll take son, and the job is yours…..”

I love the NCAA. We have players line up with an empty backfield to show a recruit that we don’t have a running back and need him to take the spot, and that’s a rules violation. Meanwhile, a recruit’s father tries to solicit $200K from Mississippi State, and there’s no repercussion whatsoever, other than the NCAA frowning at the dad attending games.

The NCAA is dangerously close to making itself into a total laughingstock.

Don’t you think if the NCAA (or FBI) could prove Auburn gave Cecil the $180K they would’ve gotten killed with sanctions. All that has been proven was Cecil asked for the money and Miss State said no. I’m not saying Auburn didn’t fork over the $, and they probably did and hopefully that will come to light one day. But until then, it gets old reading people saying that Auburn payed for a player and didn’t get anything while we did this little thing and got penalized.
Now the OSU thing is a different animal altogether. Feel free to dump on the NCAA all you want with that one.

Maybe you should re-read his comment. At no point does he even mention Auburn or anyone getting paid. Just the fact about Cecil solicited from MSU. — which is still a problem

What Kevin said. Also this isn’t an I-hate-Auburn thing (even though I do). The fact that Cam was still eligible after Cecil admitted as much as he did is still mind-boggling to me. And if you believe that Cam didn’t know a thing that was going on… well, I envy your bliss.

Actually David, Kevin is right. My comment was directed to the stupidity of the NCAA rules as applied to UGA regarding Pollack attending the press conference thing and the Crowell-in-the-backfield thing. Talk about Mickey Mouse. Stupid rules like that cause a loss of respect for the NCAA as an institution, IMO.

Is there a more stupid rule in recruiting than this? What exactly is the advantage one particular school might gain over another when doing this?
The logical conclusion to the linehof thinking with this rule would be hindering coaches from telling a recruit that they were recruiting him for football.
After all, you might give the kid the impression that he will be wearing a team uniform, playing in the home stadium, and possibly having his name/pic displayed on the scoreboard.
Heaven forbid a kid gets to imagine his future.

Totally worth it. I’m glad to see Richt roll the dice on occasion.. particularly when it’s for a big need like this. His competitors are doing a lot of the same thing, so if we’re going to get jobbed, might as well be for someone like Crowell.

No word as to whether or not the PSA was able to trade the shirt he wore during said simulation for some fresh ink at the Pain and Wonder tattoo parlor on Washington St.

When UT ran there recruits out on the field with their names on the score board that was a secondary violation and big Ed O just apologized and said he did not understand the rules. As I recall no sanctions were taken against the coaches just a your bad. Now that UGA tries something it becomes a one month HC recruiting suspension. Tell me again how fair the SEC is to UGA.

In honor of OSU can we make the punishment retroactive to last year?

It reads like it was imposed by UGA.

was the punishment NCAA imposed or SEC imposed?

As I understand it, UGA self-imposed.

I’m so sick of the NCAA. Watching the haphazard way rules are enforced and the arbitrary nature of many of the regulations themselves makes me want to vomit. That said, in this case it was absolutely worth it! And anybody who thinks that other schools aren’t using similar promotional gimmicks is probably on 24-hour sedation.

I can see it as a tool for future recruits. Bobo or Grantham can say our coach will stick his neck out to help “you” win. He just can’t contact you now but sent me to say he loves you.

Richt shoulda gotten his money’s worth and used a smoke machine, loud music and tear-away jerseys during the ‘game day simulation’.

Eh, who cares…just get the studs to sign with UGA and get them on the field

To touch on this and your earlier Auburn post, you might get a LOL out of the Auburn response to the armed robbery and what they think about Richt. This is my obviously sarcastic post, and this is someone’s oblivious response.
What more can you say? Sorry to have doubted you earlier, those folks have practically buried their whole bodies in the sand.
