With Friday’s dismissal of the four players arrested on armed robbery charges, Gene Chizik’s got a helluva job ahead of him. And, no, it’s not making people like Scarbinsky happy. It’s this:
The arrests and quick dismissal of four Auburn football players won’t dramatically change the Tigers’ 2011 opening day lineup, but it has created more holes on a roster that will be radically different than the one that won the national championship eight weeks ago.
The Tigers have lost at least 32 players since they beat Oregon for the BCS title, including five players who have been dismissed following arrests in the last two weeks. [Emphasis added.]
The good news there is that the dismissed kids didn’t make the situation much worse. The bad news is that the roster was already thinned out before the arrests.
… Auburn returns only three starters on offense and three on defense, and neither of its kickers.
The Tigers must replace their top passer and rusher, in quarterback Cam Newton; three of their four top receivers; and seven of their top nine tacklers.
The high-profile work will come when the Tigers seek to replace their three juniors who have left for the NFL draft. Gone are Newton, defensive tackle Nick Fairley and wide receiver Darvin Adams and their considerable statistics. Auburn is also losing 24 seniors, 20 of whom either started or played a significant role last season.

Yes but by Fall the Fulmer Cup season will be closed. Until then, never count the University of Tennessee out on anything. If there is a school that has the tiger blood and bad decision making capabilities to challenge Auburn’s commanding lead on accumulating multiple felony charges, it has to be the Vols. They are winners and they do it with panache like a Prius getaway vehicle.

Of course, “major violations” sounds more like an NCAA thing than law enforcement issues, for which the Fulmer Cup is awarded.
However, I do like the fact that “everyone else is doing it, too” is now becoming Auburn’s answer for everything.

Take the major out of it, and you’re correct. UGA, along with (almost) every other school, does commit a few inadvertent violations that are considered secondary.
Then, there are those happy few schools who are willing to go “all in” on the NCAA violations. If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying, eh?

Read it again. UGA is guilty of a secondary violation. Richt didn’t pay anybody. Our players (and/or their families) haven’t admitted any pay for play schemes. That would be a major violation. See the difference?
Can you think of any schools that are implicated in pay for play schemes? You shouldn’t have to think too hard. It’s one you know well. And it’s not UGA.

Everyone (except Auburn fans) knew that this was a one-hit-wonder team. Chizik has built nothing at Auburn; no staying power, no repetitive success, no depth, no strong foundation, no consistency – just college football’s versions of Dexys Midnight Runners.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see it take 4-5 years before either GA or AL lose to them again.

2007: 18th-ranked Auburn team comes into Sanford with one of the nation’s top defenses, gives up 45 points, leaves wearing tight pants and lipstick.
2008: At home, Auburn manages only 13 points against the worst defense of the Richt era, loses.
2009: Auburn blows a 14-0 lead against an even worse defense, loses.
2010: An undefeated, second-ranked Auburn team beats a Georgia team that would finish 6-7. Apparently they expect to be given a cookie for this.
