I doubt this will be the last time we hear Charlie Weis wax sarcastic in Gainesville this year.
In five years as Notre Dame’s head coach, Charlie Weis regularly lost recruiting battles to Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators. He was halfway joking when he said Monday that was the reason Meyer won two national titles in Gainesville and Weis was fired in South Bend, Ind.
One of the players Weis could not pry from Florida was current starting quarterback John Brantley, then a senior at Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala. Now that they are on the same team, Weis, Florida’s offensive coordinator, is comfortable taking a “Jersey swipe” at his new protégé.
“Yeah, you came to run the spread – that made a lot of sense,” Weis told him sarcastically. “That was a great decision on your part.”
He’s so lovable. And you can tell he’s working on a warm relationship with his head coach.
… He has three Super Bowl rings from his time as the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator, and now must submit to a rookie head coach who is 15 years younger than him.
“I want to hire the best in the business,” Muschamp said. “I don’t want a bunch of guys that are going to agree with everything I say, because … I don’t have all the answers, especially on the offensive side of the ball. You hire somebody that’s got high expertise on that side of the football and that’s what we did.”
Weis said, “This is Will Muschamp’s team,” and referred to him as “the boss.” He also believes he can impart some of the lessons he learned as a first-time head coach at Notre Dame.

I suspect I’m really going to enjoy watching the Gators this season.

I am also very interested to see how this whole situation works out. Muschamp trying to contain Weiss’ ego on one side, a Gator community that is skeptical of his resume on the other side, and Corch sitting down the hall broadcasting news for ESPN. I haven’t been to a circus in a number of years, so I’m happy to see one has come to me down here in Gville.

If Brantley had went to ND, them Weis is still the coach with multiple national championships and the earthquake in Japan never happens. Boy, that was a stupid decision.

Weis and Muchamp could end up in a fist fight on the sidelines and we would still figure out a way to lose to those guys. 20 yrs of losing will color me a bit skeptical.

Regardless, Weis is still in Corch’s shadow (at least in the college ranks). Urban was the top choice for the ND job. Urban was the head coach at Florida, Weis is an assistant.

In the end I don’t believe any player appreciates the sarcasm, even if made in jest. If questioning Brantley’s life choices is the start of a relationship, then it’s not going to be a happy one.

I’d like to be excited about the “dysfunction” that seems to be brewing at UF; however, isn’t it going to be that much worse for us UGA fans if (when) we lose to the Gators in J-Ville? I mean, Weis has been the butt of jokes throughout college football since his first ND speech and I fear the day I have to see his lard ass celebrating on the sidelines against us.

Jeremy Foley has proven, with the exception of Zook, to be terrific at selecting head coaches at Florida. In fact, I keep waiting for FL athletics to dip but the fact is that it will not as long as Foley is employed there.
To that, regardless of what I/you all may think about Will, the sonofabitch can coach defenses and has a pretty darn good offensive mind at OC. You can make fun of the guy’s physique, but the gator’s potential combination at O and D has the potential to be very potent personalities aside that is. Do I see Florida maintaining their 20-year dominance? No, but Meyer to Muschamp isn’t the same as Dooley to Goff and unless Richt and McGarity work really, really hard during that offweek, things are likely to be the same in 2011. Long term, I’ll give Foley as his program the benefit of the doubt.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Foley is a front man, always has been. The real brains in Gainesville was Greg McGarity and he is in Athens now. It might not be next year when it first shows up, but the series has already turned UGA’s way. Just give it time.

If you say so, Jax. I’m not sold on Will’s defensive prowess yet. We flat out owned him the last few times we played against his D. Greenie against his LSU D in ’04. Stafford against his Auburn D in ’06. Moreno & Stafford against his Auburn D in ’07. And we owned him in Baton Rouge in ’03, too. We just couldn’t catch the dadgum ball.
Of course, he put up solid D’s at all his stops, but we faired better than anyone against him. But I’m not convinced he has the head coach make up yet. He’s a crazy man. That’s awesome as a DC, but not many HCs have that personality. Stoic and intense is different than crazy and intense. Saban is the only one that pulls off crazy. Look at Meyer, Richt, Brown, Tressel, and Stoops and how they behave on the sideline. Can Will tone it down and thinking clearly in a game? Can he make the gameday decisions? We’ll find out. I’m not sure he’s ready. And I hope he falls flat on his face.
The time is now for us Dawgs. We’ve got the QB who grew up in that state. They’re changing everything down there. We just signed an awesome class. We don’t just need to beat them this year. We need to beat them the next 2 years.

Making fun of overweight people only makes us smaller. We need to think of positive attentions for everyone. Like Weiss: Picture a t-shirt with gator eyes at chest lavel and the teeth at stomach level. It could go viral as the biggest toothy smile of all time.

I heard an exNFL’er call Charlie a “dark room guy.” He meant that old Charlie is great at drawing up plays and designing an offense, but not an on the field coach. Charlie is not a people person, however, the idea of him up in the booth is a little scary to me.

It’s not really about the coaching abilities of Muschamp or Weis; both are proven coordinators, without a doubt. What is amusing is the likely combustibility of the two. Weis is an arrogant, ambitious dick and Muschamp has a temper somewhere between an Irish boxer and Vlad the Impaler. There could be gunplay on the UF sideline and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised.
