I admit it. As a Georgia fan, I suppose I should totally despise Steve Spurrier, but I can’t bring myself to do that because amid all the smug arrogance there also runs a streak of self-mockery which occasionally generates quotes like this:
… [Spurrier] pointed out his office window and showed me the space on the façade of Williams-Brice Stadium where they will unveil the words “2010 SEC East Champs” during Saturday’s spring game.
“We don’t have many championships here [one to be exact, 1969 ACC champs] so we’ll celebrate half of the SEC,” Spurrier said. “Most schools don’t celebrate it quite like that but we have plenty of room on the walls of our stadium.”
Don’t get me wrong, he’s a jerk. But he’s a jerk with redeeming moments now and then.

True but like he said, what else are they going to celebrate? He also probably knows that the window of the east being as easy to win as it was this past season will not last very long, if it has not already closed.

My current take on Spurrier is best arrived at through the lens of how I view the current coach at Florida. I hated Spurrier when he was at Florida, obviously. I relished at his failure in the professional ranks, and when he returned to the SEC, I figured it would be a return to form. I actually felt, dare I say, a little sorry for him. The blatant trash talk had subsided into comedic commentary, and the beast had lost its teeth. Along comes Urban Meyer, who made Spurrier look like Emily Post.
Ultimately, Spurrier was the coach I loved to hate when he was at Florida. Despite his frank nature with the press, the comedic value was money. In retrospect, there was a likeable and comedic quality to how he spoke publicly that has remained, and actually been amplified since he’s come to South Carolina. Along comes Urb, the guy you just hate, and suddenly you miss the comedic taunting. The defense of running up the score on opponents with anectdotal quips. Urb just ran it up and gloated.
I never thought I’d despise an opponent’s coach as much as I despised Spurrier, but Urb cured me of that. I’m absolutely certain that I’ll never look back and say any good things about Meyer, save for that I think he was a good coach. I’m real curious to see if…… er.. how Muschamp can duplicate the douchery that goes along with being head coash at Florida.

SOS beat the Pumpkin King when we couldn’t and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him wipe the smirk off Fulmer’s face. “You can’t spell Citrus without UT” priceless. I thought he handled the drubbing by Nebraska well. ” If we played them (Nebraska) 10 times they would probably win 8″. When Donnan beat him his response when asked as to what happened?…
“They are a good team and were clearly better than us today.” As for Urban- calling that time out was poor form. It’s just a game ……but I really don’t like that man.

Agree with others in this comment thread. The OBC keeps it real. I hated him with a passion and always felt he was a complete asshole. But as you start to see the depth of Spurrier, he doesn’t give anyone slack including himself.
That’s what I appreciate the most about him. He will say, “We suck and our quarterback played terrible.”. That is as honest as it gets. Sometimes I wish we had that same honest, upfront nature in our football program.

As long as that douchery is against Florida’s main rivals, Florida fans sincerely hope Muschamp will equal or exceed his predecessors in that regard.
Also, it is interesting to note that even though Zook was 2-1 against UGA, losing his only time to Georgia the game right after he was fired, UGA fans do not hold him with as much contempt as they do the coaches that preceded him and followed him.

That’s pretty simple Mike the Zooker was not an ahole about winning. Teams get beat all the time but their is a great deal of difference between beating a team and trying to humiliate a team. That’s why I was appalled by our celebration, it was so out of character for Mark.

Thank you, simpl_matter, for reminding me of that quote. I was sitting in the car on Broad St. after that game when I heard that comment on the radio and it went right through me. I don’t think I had ever despised that man as much as I did at that moment. He can be quite entertaining at times, but he is still Public Enemy #1 for the Bulldog Nation in my eyes. It doesn’t help that Gamecock fans now try to live vicariously through his accomplishments at Florida, i.e. his record vs. UGA.

I was there too and counted myself among the few fans left at the end of the game. The thing that annoyed those of us that stayed to the end of the game is that after the last score, Spurrier did not go for 2 and then attempt an onside kick.

I wonder if they ever use any of those facts as motivation when we play South Carolina? If there is one coach who has done everything in his power to humiliate us, it’s Spurrier. These young pups need to know their history; it’s not just South Carolina we’re playing, it’s the man who has done anything within his power to humiliate UGA.
If any of you don’t know where this hatred stems from, here’s some history. During Spurrier’s heisman year at quarterback (1966) the Gators headed into Jacksonville undefeated and ranked #7 in the country. An unranked Georgia team handed Stevie and crew their lunch that day, 27-10, ruining Spurrier’s hopes for a National Championship and an undefeated season.

I hated the bastard for running up the score between the hedges, but at the same time, it’s not his job to stop scoring, it’s our job to stop him from scoring. He’s an interesting character, and I’ll admit that I’ve always kinda liked him, even when he was at Florida. I enjoy his little one-liners, sometimes even some of the ones lobbed in Georgia’s direction. I’ve always respected the fact that if he beats you, he’ll let you know about it, but if you beat him, he’ll also let you know about that. When UGA has beaten him, he didn’t equivocate about who the better team was that day. And he still talks about Georgia snuffing out his championship chances as a player, and he speaks in nothing but terms of respect. And, with the exception of his recent love affair with oversigning, he’s always seemed to be determined to do things the right way. I have to respect that. I’ve got a problem with his oversigning, for sure. And, the fact that he also has a bit of self-deprecating wit is great, too. All in all, the SEC’s better with him in it. I look forward to wiping the smile off his face this fall.
Gotta agree with heyberto, also. Spurrier’s cocky. But Chizik is just smug. I’ll go to dinner with Spurrier everyday over Chizik.

This is what has become wrong with college football. It used to be a game played by gentleman coaches, played hard but fair. Your job was to beat your opponent not humiliate him. The media has turned it into an absolute blood sport where it’s not just that you won but how badly did you run up the score. The style point bullshat and the rest is why the fans are now fighting in the stands and after the games. The game is just continued in the parking lot. CFB has become as low as Pro ball has been.

Spurrier has a direct circuit from his heart, gut, and spleen to his mouth. At no time does any verbal impulse pass near his brain. He can nore more control his impulses than an incontinent 90 year old can control his bowels.

I’m probably alone in this, but I have no problems with Spurrier whatsoever. He never said anything about Georgia I wasn’t thinking. And he never said anything about Georgia that he wouldn’t have said about his own teams had the same been true. All he does is drop truth bombs, and that’s fine by me.
Georgia football in the ’90s was, with few exceptions, dreadful. Spurrier was simply the messenger. I don’t know what good it would have done for him to handle us with kid gloves. The gators were, on average, 5 TDs better than us most seasons. If we didn’t have Spurrier to make that an empirical fact on the scoreboard, God knows how long we would’ve toodled around with Goff.
If you want to be angry with someone from that era, be angry at the AD that allowed our football program to lag that badly behind a UF program that, at best, was a peer and, in reality, was a team we used to own.

Ok, I read these responses (most of them anyway) and I have to say this:
Spurrier is a good football coach.
Spurrier runs his team with accountability.
Spurrier is a friggin’ tyrant and knows it and doesn’t really care.
Spurrier has won, is used to winning, and hates losing.
Spurrier doesn’t abide losers and will lose a game to prove he’s the boss.
Spurrier is a smart and witty guy with a self-deprecating sense of humor.
But Spurrier is a frigging asshole and has always had a hard on for UGA every since 1966.
I honestly believe he would rather beat UGA than FSU any given year.
So, I guess he hates UGA as much as I hate Florida.
So I guess he’s ok in my book.
But the “nobody’s ever hung 50 on Georgia between the hedges” makes him right a home at SoCarolina… he’s a pure-bred Cock… and I don’t like him.
But I would play golf with him… heard he’s pretty good… and a member at ANGC…. so that’s kinda cool.
