The king of spring

If nothing else, you’ve got to give Zach Mettenberger credit for knowing when to work up a school’s fan base.  He’s got that down to a fine art.

    Ah, what could’ve been. This kid could have been Mr. G-Day Game for four years. Now he’ll have to settle for being the hero of the Purple And Gold Game for the next two.

    Mettenberger has a huge arm. But in Miles’ defense, there is more involved in the position than throwing the ball. Hell, Reggie Ball had a good arm, too.

    Not really sure why the shots being taken at ZM. I am conceding stardom to the guy yet, but in every chance to shine, he has stepped up. First the G Day Game last April where he looked pretty polished and showed a lot of progress under Richt/Bobo in the time he had been on campus. (They do have a pretty sterling reputation of developing QB talent, in case you hadn’t noticed.) Then he had a very impressive TD/INT ratio in JUCO. Now he looks the best of the QBs in Red Stick.

    Sure, those aren’t the same level of tests he would encounter in the SEC on a weekly basis but if he is not batting a thousand, he seems to be the most promising stick in the Tiger pile. If I were wearing Purple and Gold, he would be my pick. Will he make mistakes? Of course, but have you seen the QB situation LSU has been saddled with the past 4 years? I hate to think what they would have done with solid QB performance. I am not saying he would play in front of Murray, but I would feel better knowing he was available when needed. Miles may not start him against Oregon but I expect to see him play a lot this year.

      I’m not taking shots at ZM. I’m taking shot at his respective fan bases, who have reacted pretty similarly based on the very small sample size of a spring game.

    I always kind of thought Mettenberger would start for LSU, lookin that way. He had a great year over at jr univ. espn hs the kid as a bonafide heisman candidate. Think he’ll put up some big numbers, and a load of wins.

      Not hating on Mett, just don’t see it. You think Less Miles is going to develope a QB? OK, gotcha he has just been frontin’ about QB developement all these years. BUT, now with METT, he is going to whip it out like a NERD at prom, with no girls.

    Big arm, slow release, slow feet. I never thought he would beat out AM. Miles, like everybody else, wants to win. He’s seen both all Spring. One Spring game isn’t going to change that. If Jefferson flops the Mett might get a chance.

      I agree with your assessment of Mett. The point is that he is better than anyone else at QB in Baton Rouge, though.

    Look’s like these Spring Games are getting to be like Golf. You drive for the show and putt for the dough. Spring games are noting but Driving competition. Putting in golf is where quarterbacking is in football. A lot of pretenders have had “better” spring games and can even drive those white balls to eternity. Just watch what happened at the Masters.

    I pull for Mett. Perhaps he’s not a sterling gentleman, but I like anybody who has the cojones to come to Athens and compete with Murray, the presumptive starter as soon as he committed. With some luck, maybe we’ll square off with him in the dome this december.

    And – dang – what an arm!
