I understand it’s convenient to use the transition to the 3-4 as an excuse for mediocre defensive play last year, but, man, I wish they’d quit saying stuff like this.
“I think the guys we have know where they’re supposed to run and which gap is theirs,” Robinson said. “I think we’re being more attacking right now. I think last year we were kind of hesitant. I don’t think that’s too much to say, but we really kind of sat back and wanted to play it safe…”
And this.
“You know, I’d been playing in the old system so long. And then we switched, I was just trying to pick up things here and there,” he said.
And this.
“I see a guy who’s very serious about wanting to earn playing time and earn a starting job,” Richt said of Hamilton. “He’s a guy who I know has been spending some extra time on his own trying to learn and get better, as compared to a year ago. I don’t think he was doing quite as much of that as he should.”
Don’t talk anymore. Just do.

I was gleefully re-watching the 2007 Sugar Bowl against Hawaii on Hulu the other day and I was asking myself “What was wrong with Willie Martinez’s defense?”
The Dogs surely knew where they were suposed to run and which gap was theirs that night. Granted, Hawaii is nowhere near an SEC team. But still.

This always happens with change. You get to complain about the changes, then you blame the changes, and then hopefully you move on.
To be honest, I think that the statement about Hamilton by the head man, is probably a pretty good sign. I am sure he thought that he would step right in, but that didnt work so he is putting in the work…and it isnt him saying it, it is someone else saying it…the other quotes are more about blaming the last year on the previous guy, even if the previous guy was you.

A handful of better defensive plays though the season last year and we would have been 10-3, if not 12-2.
I don’t think we could have beaten Auburn, seeing how they blew us out by 18, consequently, they likelu would beat us twice if we were 11-1 at the end of the regular season. We could, however, have beaten everyone else.
So, I do not think we began too far away from where we need to be to succeed defensively in the SEC.
We have a ton of highly-regarded DBs coming in. One or two of them probably will pick-up significant playing time. See Tree last season.
I really belive the D line and linebacker corps are more than solid with enough depth to last the season. They just need to be able to play four quarters.
Consequently, I do not think it a stretch at all to think we’ll do so much better this year, that come next January, we’ll be knocking on the door of another national championship.

Seriously Senator, there is no need to frustrate yourself by expecting to hear anything meaningful or that will make you feel better. The quotes and articles write themselves. It is standard pablum that is the same across all programs and all years, with minor variations depending upon circumstances (new coach, new scheme, new QB, sophomore jinx, senior year, injuries, etc.,). There will be nothing original or inspiring. It is all empty words and if you expect more you will only be disappointed.

+1. You’re exactly write. It’s all spring puff pieces right now and whatever positive quotes that can be written about a team that went 6-7 last year are most definitely going to be written because…wait for it…that’s what fans want to hear.
We could go on and on asking the coaches to give it to us straight with no b.s. (or as you said Senator, actually see some of this talk translate to improved performance on the field), but when it comes down to it we want these kinds of articles (the puff piece about Cornelius in The Telegraph today, for example) because they at least give us something to look forward to for next season.
I’ve bought into the spring puff before and I still read the articles (if only for the “feel good” of it) but everyone has their own opinions on what next season will bring and the puff pieces aren’t going to change that.
I am predicting a very mediocre season for us this year, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still read the articles and try to feel better about the new season. I love this team so I’m going to read about them regardless of whether it’s good or bad news and regardless of whether the coaches/players are blowing smoke up our butts or not.

Remember that the college student-athlete is limited in the amount of compulsory training that he is required to do. I’m afraid that our teams have not been very self motivated the last few years. Put this together with a totally new scheme and you have guys looking totally lost on the D last year. If the competition makes some of our guys worry enough about their future pro careers to do the extra needed to be great then we’ll do ok but if all this talk is just scripted BS then we will know for sure after the first two games.

What are they supposed to do? The reporters are asking them questions like “do you see a difference in how you understand the defense this spring versus last spring?” and “do you think that coming off of a 6-7 season that guys are hungrier this year?”. They are literally being baited into providing enough material for these reporters to write articles that will get the most reads because this is what fans want to hear. That’s it. Our players aren’t media trained. And they’ve been slammed enough in the press to know that it’s better to just say what they think will give the general public a reason to quit their bitching for a second.

I’m about tired of hearing/reading Chris Robinson quotes. Dude needs to put a lid on his pie-hole, reconcile his 3 tackles/game from last year and promise not to be daisy-picking in 2011. What is SOOOO scary is that somewhere he has been anoited “captain” of these defensive unit. I ain’t seen the crudentials…..

Christians’ been nothing but a stand up kid in Athens. Played his rear-end off and now is the kind of vocal leader we’ve all said has been missing in recent years.
So he talks…and we rake him over the coals for talking.
Christian’s the captain for the defense because he’s the one that actually knows where everyone is supposed to be and what they’re supposed to do. That’s a good thing. Every defense needs that guy. Let’s let the kids play it out and cheer for them instead of doubting everything they say and do so we can say “I told you so when they fail.” I swear, I think some Dawg fans want us to lose so they can whine more.
