Extra gloss on the glass house

Okay, I admit I broke a self-imposed rule.

I read a Bleacher Report post.  I couldn’t help it.  A post entitled “Is It Time to Examine Mark Richt’s Recruiting Standards Now?” was too tempting not to check to see if the author was willing to go someplace truly stupid.

And Larry Burton, bless his heart, doesn’t disappoint.  Nah, he goes there.

… It’s not like Richt’s seat isn’t already hot, but does he need to throw gasoline on his own fire with his choice of Bulldog players spending so much time in handcuffs?

For Georgia fans, it may be time to examine the source of the problem.

You’d have thought Richt unlocked the door and told the recruits which lockers to rob.

Seriously, it’s one thing to blame Richt for not exercising enough control over the kids who’ve enrolled in his program.  It’s another to argue that Richt should somehow be held accountable for high school recruits who victimized Richt’s own players.

Which Burton does.

Since Bonner has in fact been given offers by many other big time schools, it could be hard to blame Richt for also recruiting him, but just the sheer number of players in trouble at Georgia should make even the most ardent Georgia fan at least begin to question the recruiting standards of Richt and his staff.

But wait a minute.  Bonner’s been offered by every major program in the South, and the other two recruits… um, the other two recruits don’t hold offers from Georgia.  None of them are “Bulldog players”.  So now we’re down to blaming Richt for merely allowing kids on campus.

At this point, I couldn’t help but wonder ab0ut Larry’s loyalties.

He writes professionally for Touchdown Alabama Magazine and covered games during the Championship Season run from the press box and interviewed the coaches and players. He is proud to be a member of the Football Writers of America Association and the most read SEC and Alabama football writer at Bleacher Report.

Larry lives with his wife and Pug (Baccardi the Wonder Dog)… He is Community Leader for Alabama here on BleacherReport.com, He served several terms as a director in the Red Elephant Club and loves to meet with the Crimson Tide coaches and administrators. His Bama time were from 1976 to 1981 during the back to back National Championship years!

Hmm.  Well, I’m sure they had nothing to do with the premise of his article.  After all,

… Bonner was being heavily recruited by several schools and held offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, South Carolina and USC.

Somebody pass Larry the Windex, please.

That’s quite a machine that Alabama has managed to put into play. An Alabama fan worrying about what Georgia fans must think is rich. Their concern is noted. This is our house we can look after it without their aid …thank you very much. I can’t help but think that CMR is making someone nervous.

What’s even funnier is the Barners carrying on about Georgia’s arrests when it would serial killer to be enrolled anywhere else to catch them in the Fulmer Cup this year.

I thought the same thing when I read this .
Dude is quite the dot connector.
    It’s all Richt’s fault.

The irony here is that all three players were on campus for the A-Day game the day before they got locked up in Athens! I have a hard time believing that the news that they were suspects had not reached T-town by that time.

You’ve got to read Burton’s own comments to his “report.” He attacks every poster who dares question his theories.

The venom with which the guy goes after the commenters is remarkable. The guy writes a deliberately provocative, over-the-top article littered with easily refutable inaccuracies, then seems angry that he got the response he must’ve been looking for and goes after commenters with personal attacks. You rarely see that outside of message board chatter.

Indeed. Bleacher Report is slightly better organized message board chatter.

The problem with TBR is that pretends to be something more than message board chatter with a headline.

        • If Bleacher Report posted an article tomorrow about how giant boulders weren’t going to start falling from the sky the next morning, I would immediately go out and buy a helmet.

So in a way, a BR article casting aspersions on Richt’s continued stability in Athens is kind of reassuring.

Doug, I sadly removed the Hey Jenny Slater bookmark from my browser the other day due to inactivity–this was about the time of year where you turned political (that Ann Rand rant was epic). Your fall post game therapies were always top on my list.

Those computer thieves really jacked us over.

The silliest part is that the kids are from Columbus.

Who in the state of Alabama doesn’t know that Columbus is pretty well split as an Auburn/Georgia town?

If you’re going to make baseless and sensational accusations, why not twist the knife on your most hated rival and claim that the kids are Barners intent on tormenting the Dawgs?

    What?

No accusations of NCAA violations for Georgia paying off recuruits with improper gifts of iPODs, iPhones, and other electronic devices?

Mr. Burton, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent column were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on the internet is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Anybody notice how long he was at Alabama? I’m a sophomore and it’s not a guarantee I’ll graduate on time (please don’t tell my parents), but he was there from 1976-81. I’m sure that extra year helped. Not sayin, just sayin.

Senator, this would have been a nice place to insert a little warning not to give this jackass a blog hit. Perhaps, we can devise some kind of code word to put before or after a link for just such an instance. I hate that I gave that fool a credibility point simply by opening that page. What a maroon.

It’s a stupid premise to single out a program for recruiting the wrong athletes when typically every other school is recruiting those exact same athletes, but I guess the thought never occurred to him that his school recruited half the “bad apples” that are getting busted in Athens. For crying out loud, they offered Zach Mettenburger AFTER he was arrested and booted from our team.

In other hard hitting news Mark Richt was guilty of talking to a recruit that was given a speeding ticket in Walnut Grove overnight. It is clear that he has lost control of the program.

This guy’s blog post was awful, and it’s probably even below the not-so-lofty standards set by “Bleacher Report”. The sad thing is, though, his take on the event is actually much better reasoned and far better written than that of professional columnist and noted jackass Adam Krohn, who sadly works for an actual newspaper, the Gainesville (Georgia) Times.

WARNING: Do not read the linked column if you’ve got blood pressure issues or simply don’t want to have your mind raped by a simpleton.
