Mark Richt dropped a pretty strong hint yesterday about the time for the South Carolina game.
… While the game time for the Georgia-South Carolina game has not been officially announced, Richt twice alluded to the game being at night and on ESPN.
If he’s not jumping the gun, that means the game is likely to be at 7:45 p.m.
As someone who would prefer not to melt in the midday September sun, all I can say is bless you to those involved in the game time decision.

So you think CBS is going with Auburn @ Miss St.?
I would think CBS would want a supposedly Top 10 ranked Gamecocks on the road in a key SEC East match up over a depleted defending National Champ on the road versus a solid Miss St. team. I am assuming CBS can’t get the Bama game because it is at Penn St. and ABC/ESPN has first rights to that game.
I hope CBS chooses Aub @ MSU. I would rather play in cooler temps than be on CBS.

I do not think CBS will start its SEC coverage until a week later. They usually are wrapping up the US Open.
I would expect the Bama/PSU game to be on ABC unless there is another marquee matchup that weekend featuring a Big 10 or Pac 12 participant.
There is pretty good chance that the game will be on ESPN or ESPN2 with kickoff somewhere in the 5:45 – 7:45 window.

Checking the USTA’s published US Open schedule, the Men’s semifinals start at 11:00 AM and the Women’s Final is not until 7:00 PM. I don’t follow tennis at all so I have no idea if they can play 2 semi’s and then switch to football @ 3:30. Plus still have enough time to switch back to tennis by 7:00.
Also, I believe that ND is playing Michigan at 7:00 PM that same night so expect that one to be televised by ABC or ESPN.

Wish UGA had the power/wisdom/gonads to tell all TV networks no game before late October will be played before sunset. Period. And all other southern based schools should stand with them.

I don’t know why they don’t have all night games for September. I sympathize with those driving home to South Georgia after the game, but Good Lord, it’s a slow lingering death during those midday games. Just walking to the stadium at the Arky game last year had me sweating like Ted Kennedy eating Thai food.

I am from South Georgia originally and I just don’t believe that is a valid issue any longer. Maybe when Vince and his old tight wads were running the show but now? With the cost of tickets/contributions, two tanks of gas, and parking, why would anyone want to get up at sunrise, rush to the stadium without savoring the atmosphere, sit in the broiling sun for 3+ hours, then rush home completed an 8-10 driving day just to avoid a $75 hotel bill? That is why Tom Bodet leaves the lights on.
Now contrast that with sleeping in Saturday morning, splitting the drive over two days, drinking up the atmosphere of a Saturday afternoon of fine scenery/comaraderie, a reasonable temperature at game time, fun after the game with no need to rush out and curse the traffic, a good night’s sleep (maybe, if the OL and defense shows up even partially), then a leisurely drive back home.
Pack your damn pillow if you need to. Cost of that just isn’t a factor relative to all other considerations. We used to sprint to the telephone when it was long distance too, time to move along folks. What percentage of the fans attending do you think really pull that marathon day any longer? Is the tail wagging the dawgs here? (That said, we have sold our souls to the WWL & CBS so what the fans want isn’t really relevant but the South Georgia excuse isn’t either.)

You raise valid points. I for one am still looking for these mythical persons who like to get up early, drive to the game, watch it and then go home and enjoy the rest of their day. It’s big time football Saturdays, not a minor league baseball game. The pre-game tailgating and atmosphere is as much a part of the day as the game itself, and I wish our administration would acknowledge that.

I live in south GA and I also prefer evening games. When I did the one day trip for Central Michigan ’08, both the drive and heat were awful. The only one day trips I’ve done since have all been WLOCPs in Jax. It was much more enjoyable watching Kentucky ’09 at night (despite the loss and “Party in the USA”) and not having to drive home after the game.

Amen, brother. My seats are in 301, and we absolutely bake in the sun during the early season noon kickoff games. Even though it means I don’t get home (Aiken, SC) until around 2-3 a.m., I prefer the night games in September.

CBS will not start SEC coverage until after the US Open. Some years (like when the season opener is on Aug. 30 or 31) we’ll get the South Carolina game on CBS to open the season.
Bama @ Penn St. will almost surely be a 3:30 ABC game or an 8 p.m. national game on ABC. We’ll most likely be on ESPN or ESPN2 at night. I’m hoping for a 7 p.m. kickoff. It’s still much cooler, but that gets us home 45 minutes sooner.
2 laaaaate Saturday nights to kick off the season, but Sanford will be rockin’ after we bust Boise in the mouth a week earlier.

My Penn State people are saying that College Gameday will be in Happy Valley for the Alabama game; and it’s looking like that will be a night game. So, that means ABC or ESPN will carry that game. The USCe/UGA game could be the ESPN/ESPN2 game at night. I’m hoping for 7:45. CBS never starts any SEC coverage until week 3; and it’s always the UT/UF game.

I heard yesterday that FSU doesn’t have a day time game all of september. I wish we could be they are too scared we will be too drunk to watch the game. A long day of tailgating….. puking before walking in the game…. IM DOWN

So the consensus here is that night games are a good time. Let’s get the word out that if we want to continue to enjoy them, let’s not leave the campus looking like the aftermath of a biker gang war.

Greg McGarity explicitly said that the South Carolina game would be a night game at the Athens Chamber of Commerce banquet a couple of months ago, fwiw. I’d say it’s a done deal.

Disagree … He will be coming back from his 6th or 7th suspension & if he is suspended for two games they’ll be ECU & the Citadel (Week 1 & Week 12)
