Coach Richt isn’t sure that Georgia will be much better off than Boise State with regard to the number of preseason practices his team gets in.
“Probably minimal,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said Wednesday night in Greenville, S.C. “It may keep them from getting somebody, hurt, you know? You get 29 practice opportunities. Historically, we have not gotten 29 every year. Some years we do and some years we don’t. It’s just based on the weather sometimes, it’s based on the injury report, based on if you think the team is just dog tired.”
Richt says this preseason the way the calendar falls with the summer exam schedules and the NCAA mandated acclimation period, Georgia may be a couple of practices short of 29 itself.
Well, at least the Broncos won’t have an advantage. Or, shades of Vince Dooley, is that a whiff of smoke being blown up my derriere I smell?

I have a feeling that there won’t be a trip to the pool in store for the guys this August. I wouldn’t be surprised if the full 29 practices aren’t in conditions just short of Hades.

that was my first thought – one of our 29 is spent at the pool every year. that was a neat trick the first couple of times he did it, but once the team came to expect it, it lost the desired effect.
hopefully this year we won’t abandon 2/days and go soft on contact like we did last year since that worked out so well for us…

+1. That had as much to do with the lack of conditioning we saw on last year’s team as anything. Galactically bad idea.

He took them to the pool last year coming off of his worst season as a HC. What will be different this year?

Well, he has changed things up quite a bit so far this offseason. There’s no reason to assume he’ll do the same-old, same-old during the preseason.

There’s a lot of things that go on in the off season I’m interested in. Whether or not the team goes swimming one day is not one of them.

I’d think they’ll still go to the pool, but I would think it will be more needed for the players this year due to the intense practices before and after. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

It’d be nice to blame the pool for our problems, but I think that’s a bit of a red herring. Improved S+C and hard ass practices (Which I think we did this Spring and anticipate this summer) are what is needed. I hope they earn a trip to the pool this fall.

If two or three practices were going to be the difference between Boise beating us or not beating us, then they really weren’t going to beat us anyway. Honestly, it’s not like their entire preseason isn’t going to be focused on this one game. If they can’t get enough worked out in the time they’ve still got, then they aren’t good enough to win the game. It’s that simple. Georgia does have the potential opportunity to have a few more practices, but you’ve got to consider that a lot of Georgia’s time is going to be spent on looking at South Carolina, too, because they mean a whole hell of a lot to our season than Boise does. If Georgia does beat the Broncos, it’s not going to be because they had some practices taken away. It’s going to be because Georgia’s better than they are.
Incidentally, they did this to themselves, so I don’t know why everyone’s so worried about poor ol’ Boise and their missed practices.

Forgot. The NCAA hasn’t spoken yet. This is their self-imposed punishment. They will probably demand that two of their players be hung by the neck and then report that OSU’s self-flagellation is over the top.
