More Dawg porn

Per Gentry Estes:

To continue to illustrate the impact of Jenkins’ arrival and Geathers’ improvement, Richt told those in attendance later that “Last year we probably played as much four-down, three-linebacker as we did the 3-4 because we didn’t really have that nose guard. Now we can do it the way Coach Grantham wants to do it.”

Been hearing a lot about the possibility of Jenkins and Geathers being in the game at the same time in the nickel package but nothing about how that strategy operates. Anyone know of a team who has done this sort of thing before with two 340+ tackles on the line at the same time?

I’m all for it, and its obviously been thought of before, yet I’ve not really seen any “expert” commentary on how a system like that works or what the advantages/disadvantages are, or video of a team thats done it before. Do you keep your 3-4 ends in there on the outside or do the outside backers stay in with them and the ends sit out? If anyone can point me towards something like that I would appreciate it.

If Ray Drew can come in and have an impact I would think it would look like a 2-4-5 nickel package, but Drew would have his hand on the ground on the strong side and Jarvis will play the weak side either standing or with his hand on the ground (whatever he is more comfortable with). Christian and Ogletree in the middle. If Drew doesnt contribute immediately, it will be either Abry or Tyson. Either way it will be a 4-2 front but with 2-4 or 3-3 personnel.

I’m looking for something more technical or just a video of highlights of a defense thats done it before.

We saw lots of technical x’s and o’s stuff on these sorts of blogs during the transition to the 3-4 a year ago about the sorts of blitzes that come out of the 3-4, difference between a one and two gap 3-4 , how to beat a 3-4, ideal players for it, etc. I’m asking for something like one of those, specific to using two prototype nose tackles at the same time in a nickel or any other package.

But yeah, I’d love to see Drew turn out to be the real deal and rush the quarterback with the two monsters and Jarvis Jones.

How about alternating the big guys so they stay fresh particularly for the 4th quarter?

      +1.

If all the opposing team has is one stellar running back then I can see the logic behind putting your biggest boys on the line and stuffing it.

But most of the teams we will be playing have better than average QBs, for the most part, so getting the bigger bodies in there may actually hinder the pass rush more than help it. I’m no expert, but I’d alternate my big boys, like Mayor said, so we can still do damage by crunch time in the 4th.

I’d love to see them both be good enough to sub regularly without much drop off from starter to backup.

I heard some radio guy opine that Geathers was a little too tall to be a true nose, and he thought you might see Geathers at end some. A 3 man line that goes Tyson, Jenkins, Geathers would look lot like a four man line to a lot of teams. And yeah, I know it’s just talk but what else can you do this time of year?

I doubt it, I never listen to him; might have been the Chuck from Chuck and Chernoff, I guess. Not that that would be what you would call inside info, but it did make a little sense. I can see Jones and Tyson on the ends and Jenkins in the middle, and Geathers all over.

I think that had to contribute to a lot of the confusion we saw on the field last year. I’m hoping that guys will at least look like they know where they’re headed this season.
