Tommy Tuberville has a new theory on why his 2004 Auburn team should be awarded the national title which was just vacated: “Someone should be awarded (the) title. If not, the team that had to forfeit is not really punished.”
I could be wrong, but I suspect that Southern Cal begs to differ with Tubs on that. Still, it’s nice of him to care.

Am i the only one who thinks the aubiecanes would have gotten murdered had they played usc in 04 just like they did in 02 and 03 with more or less the same teams. not to mention how dominant usc was out of conference in the carrol years. their victims included auburn as mentioned above and eventual sec west champ arkansas in 06. We’ll never know cuz they never played but i have a hard time believing third time would’ve been the charm for tubbs against usc.

Far be it from me to defend Auburn, but your post misses the point, in my opinion. I agree with your supposition that USC (as illegally constituted in 2004) probably would have beaten Auburn. But would they have beaten Auburn without Reggie Bush? Would they have beaten Auburn if they had not broken whatever other rules they broke that year? Maybe not. Of course, that assumes Auburn wasn’t breaking any rules in 2004 – which may or may not be true.

for gosh sakes, Tubs lost twice (in two attempts) in three years to Reggie BaLLLL and Billy Bob Gailey. That alone should disqualify them from claiming the title in 2004. To use a term Barners seem not only to understand, but love to throw out there, “quit sounding all butthurt about 2004, Barners.” You cheating hicks really need to get over it.

I hope you’re enjoying Lubbock. I hear it’s lovely this time of year.
With regard to your request that someone be awarded the 2004 National Championship, I wonder if you’d give a damn if your team wasn’t one of the teams in line for the honor that season. I sincerely doubt it. However, since your team was one of the undefeated in 2004, please explain to me why it should be awarded to you and not to Oklahoma. After all, the fact that Southern Cal beat the stuffing out of the Sooners in no way says that you could have done better against the Trojans. A similar Trojan group came into your stadium and molested your Tigers on national television the year before. Since the 2004 USC Trojans apparently never existed, then the 2004 Oklahoma Sooners never lost a game. What makes you think you would have been an automatic lock to beat the Sooners when you barely managed to beat ACC Champion Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl? In case you’ve forgotten, the score was 16-13. Does such a narrow victory really guarantee that you would beat an Oklahoma team that humiliated every other opponent they faced, with the exception of two close games against Texas A&M and Oklahoma State?
No. Of course it doesn’t. The fact is, we’ll never know who would win if your team played Oklahoma. The fact that your team knew they had to make a rousing statement in the Sugar Bowl in order to get any AP votes and instead nearly lost to the Hokies tells me that, with a month to prepare, Oklahoma might have been ready for you.
However, the good news is that Auburn does have a national championship to celebrate (for now!), and you’ve got a nice, hot summer in Lubbock to enjoy. Everyone wins. Move on with your life.

I think that Tubbs might need to rethink his postion considering several of his players came forward on national television to claim they were paid. Just my opinion, but isnt that why USC had to vacate?

Um. USC is “really punished” inasmuch as they were forced to forfeit the game and lose the right to call themselves national champions. That is what is known as a punishment in most circles. Maybe not amongst river-based gambling vessel community, but in most circles.

Never understood why they called Tubs a riverboat gambler. On his wildest nights, Tubs was the kind of man who gingerly approached the nickel slots. And who did so only when the riverboat was firmly docked.

Much as the case is now with LSU, I think writers often misinterpreted the stupid things Tuberville did to be “gambles” instead of plain, old stupid things.

I dislike The aU worse than UF for all their cheating and lack of integrity, but I do not think USC was the better team in 2004. Either team was good enough to beat the other had they played but I felt Auburn was better than USC, and played a better schedule. If you take Reggie Bush’s talent off the USC side, Auburn might have been much better than the Trojans.
This is not to say either should claim a faux title, since no title exists in D1 CFB, but this is another example of a game we should have seen played that season. I really don’t understand Tubbs making another claim for this year since he already had a parade past Toomers to celebrate that team. Just shows how weird the system we have is: USC signs an agreement to be bound by the BCS silliness than claims a crown that LSU won in 2003. Now USC wins the system title they disavowed the year before, and has it stripped but no one has a right to make a case to claim it although only one major team was unbeaten. And some fans actually like this process. You get what you will tolerate and, for now, we seem to be stuck with this inconclusive mess.

What’s the difficulty here? Teams win the BCSNC all the time without beating the team that is really 2nd best that season and in reality was the best (See LSU and UGA 2007). Vacate USC’s BCSNC and give it to Auburn. Then vacate Auburn’s 2010 title and give that one to TCU.

What’s the difference between Bush getting all sorts of stuff from an outside agent, and Troy Reddick and Stanley McClover admitting to taking payments to play for Auburn.
The big difference is that Bush was being paid for his celebrity while the pair of Auburn players were being paid simply for playing football at Auburn. 2004 Auburn cheated just as much as Auburn did in ’57, ’83, ’93 and 2010. They are a joke, sham of a program, and we all know that they were also cheating in ’04, same as USC, except worse.
