This Cecil Newton interview is about what you’d expect, but there’s one quote from him that really cracked me up.
… Asked whether he solicited money from Auburn, Newton said: “According to what the NCAA findings are, that’s what we’re going with.”
Boy, now there’s a rousing self-endorsement.

I dont know how anyone can defend this guy with a straight face. Does that sound like a statement an innocent guy would make? I understand there’s a difference between what you suspect and what you can prove. So far, there’s not proof, but boy oh boy, there’s plenty of reason to be suspicious.

I was actually asking if you still think Cecil’s innocent of soliciting anything from Auburn. That’s all it would take for him to be ineligible, even with the NCAA Cam loophole. Auburn wouldn’t even have to reach for its wallet.
If Cecil saw the error of his ways and directed Cam to go to Auburn just so he’d never have the taint of the MSU solicitation on his record, why not just say that?

Look, this whole “there’s an investigation and I can’t say much” garbage is a cop-out. What, an investigator is going to see you saying “I didn’t solicit money from Auburn” and all of a sudden try to trip you up on your words?

Seriously? You’re comparing someone daring to question your school based on a growing pile of anecdotal evidence to someone committing a heinous act of vandalism? Did you even go to Auburn, Ward? Because you’re giving Auburn grads a bad name with garbage like that. I know and respect many Auburn graduates, as I grew up in Columbus and many of my friends ended up matriculating on the Plains. To a man, they all admit that things around Cecil Newton smell fishy. And they deny tooth and nail that Auburn paid money, and that’s fine. The fact is, if Cecil asked anyone attached to Auburn for money, then Cam was ineligible to play there. Auburn would have knowingly played an ineligible player at that point (or they would have played a player that they should have known was ineligible due to not monitoring boosters or some NCAA crap). And there is certainly reason to suspect that he did. Cecil Newton clearly had his hand out where his son was concerned, by his own admission. That’s the problem. If Cecil asked for money from MSU, why wouldn’t he ask for money from Auburn? And when you have him passing up the opportunity to directly refute that allegation in a story like this, instead responding with lawyer speak for NO reason (no reason at all, really, because if he’s denied it to the NCAA, why wouldn’t he deny it to a reporter? There’s no possible way it blows back on him if he issues a one-line denial to a reporter in Charlotte).
Now, if that bothers you so much, then stop reading the comments here, because the logical high ground rests on this side of the argument. It’s not like poisoning a tree. It’s not vandalizing a college campus. It’s stating the very reasonable suspicion which many reasonable people have.

You would think that the guy would want to stand up and tell the truth if he did not in fact solicit money from Auburn. I guess if the NCAA makes a mistake in their investigation and determines he was banging those Tiger chicks that are on the payroll he will own up to it even if it isn’t true then.
My thoughts are that he knows what he did. He knows it will not come out until a year or so after the Feds case is wrapped up so the NCAA can nibble on those morsels. By that time his son will be a millionaire and that one year at Auburn will be a long way back in the rear view mirror.

Nothing bad will happen to Cecil until he meets his maker. The NCAA can’t do anything to him or Cam now. Auburn might get nailed 5 years from now but only if the Feds have wiretap evidence that proves Cam and Cecil either solicited or actually took money from Auburn. The chickenshit NCAA wouldn’t have done anything about USC and Bush except for the fact that the thing became public knowledge and they had to.

To Ward and the others, this is probably the most transparent and truthful statement made by Cecil. He did solicit MSU, probably didn’t get a deal with Auburn but protected Cammy from NCAA sanctions, and now will get “his” millions.
Karma would have Cam’s legal counsel shield his income from any access by the good Reverend.

The whole damned thing was one continuous lie. Remember when Auburn said that Cecil was being banned from the program and all that guff was made about how Cecil couldn’t go to the BCSNCG? Immediately after the game the TV people were showing Cecil sitting in a seat in one of the exclusive private boxes. Regular seats were going for $1,000 who knows what that box seat would cost–$5,000, $10,000, who knows? I wonder how ol’ Cecil got a private box seat since he was banned? Who paid for it since Cecil was supposed to be broke? Did Auburn give him the seat? One lie after another.
