        Kudos to him if he does. However, that’s not really likely, and it shouldn’t be. If a change must be made, it should be the freshman, not the upperclassman.

    Except for that DJ Shockley guy. I guess he was pretty good. Turene’s going to wear #3 when he arrives.

    I’d take Branden and Isaiah and make them compete to wear #1 each week. Whoever has the best week of practice, best off-field discipline and best week in the classroom wears #1. Second place wears #4. Heck, have ’em switch at half-time.

    This situation worries me sick. If Branden switches, that kid will be my hero. He should take a long look at #4. There was another pretty good corner that wore that number between the hedges.

      +1 I hope he can be another Pollack. Except, who on the team did he used to play Pee Wee League with? How will Uncle Verne wax lyrical about him without a childhood buddy on the team?

      BTW, did y’all know that David Pollack and David Greene used to play Pee Wee ball together growing up?

        Clearly, Uncle Verne already has his angle for this season’s Dawgs…Did you know Aaron Murray and Orson Charles played high school ball together, and that they can communicate on routes in subtle ways because of it?

        Not that we’re playing on CBS this year…

    One of them needs to take number 4. If not Crowell, then Smith. It should be Crowell, but if both refuse then they are putting themselves before the team and that, from the many folks who have commented about the “cancers” being let go this past off season, should be cause for one or both of them to be shown the door.

    I know it won’t happen, but this kind of selfishness and me-first attitude (especially over a number of all things) is part of the reason why we have played so poorly these past few years. And who knows, maybe they have already figured this out and it’s a non-issue now.

    The coaches need to step up, tell these guys what number they’ll get (if both refuse to change numbers) and laugh if either whine about it.

      Heck, folks . They’re not even hitting yet. Stop the fretting. It’s like everyone went to the bakery and got some bad LSD bread today.
      “My face is melting!” “The sky is falling and it ain’t blue!” “The Dawgs are peeing on the numbers of their jerseys so no one else will wear them!” Isaiah hasn’t played a down and you want to kick him off the team for picking a number you don’t want him to pick? Get a grip!!

      And people think we need to honor “tradition” and not do stuff like the Pro Combat uniforms or blackout games.

      Kids these days are different, and have a different set of priorities. Isaiah Crowell’s “brand” if you will, is tied to the number 1.

      Adapt and move on. It’s 2011.

        And ordinarily, I’d say that’s fine. However, nobody knows his “brand” outside of Columbus right now. Now is when he starts making the brand. And if spreading your personal brand potentially hurts the ability of the team to score points, that’s a problem. Smith was here first and he’s proven something in college. Crowell hasn’t. His brand is gonna be whatever jersey he puts on, not his Carver High School jersey.

          Agreed. But telling that to a kid who has been fawned all over by these same coaches for the past 3 years is a little easier said than done.

          18 year old are really self absorbed people. Nerds, shitty football players, all of them.

          It’s taken to another level when you’re wanted like these kids are.

    That is not what CMR said today. His words were (I am paraphrasing but this is pretty close), “We will see how much Smith will play on offense. If we see that we need both guys on that side of the ball then we will make a change.” CMR also said that several players have already asked for those numbers and he thinks that he will hold #3 &#4 open until next years recruiting class. This was from his press conference today.

    Numbers matter. One of the reasons we got Andre Hastings was that Joey Hester had just graduated and left #1 open, while Notre Dame had an All-American safety, Todd Lyght, who wasn’t letting go of his #1.

    Plus, Goff promised Hastings that we’d switch to black shoes, which we did, so he could spat them up. Was Hastings a bad apple? I don’t know. I sure did enjoy that 10-2 ’92 season.

      I tutored Hastings and Hearst in ’91 and ’92. Both are really decent human beings; I never felt like they big-timed me.

    If Smith is even being considered to run any plays on offense, then someone has to change numbers. Our coaching staff already struggles with time management and personnel issues. I can see us now taking a TO because we have two #1s on the field at the same time. At a crucial moment in a game no less.
