Big Man

I was sorta kidding about this the other day, but I guess I was right after all:

Nose guard John Jenkins is practicing in jersey No. 66. Georgia says it does not have a No. 6 jersey that fits the 6-3, 351-pounder. It did when the team practiced without shoulder pads, but with them on he’s got to wear 66. A bigger No. 6 jersey is on the way.

Seriously, I’m more eager to see our D line in action than any other aspect of the team right now (perhaps because I just don’t want to think too much about OL depth and the RB mysteries).

Practice reports on how well the DB’s are looking, and my confidence that the combo of Kwame and Big John will handle the middle, I am getting a better feeling about the D. Still a nagging concern about the LBs, but overall, August is putting some fears away that the offenses in the first two games may be contained enough to allow the Dawgs to prevail….especially in the crucial one against SC at home.

I’m glad that he is getting used to the heat as well. That should help his and everyone else’s conditioning even more.

That said, let’s reserve some of this optimism till they actually strap on the pads and go full speed at one another. That will help us truly guage where we are on both sides of the ball.

Need an edge rusher. Boise will spread it out and we’ll be in 4-2-5. Which of the big guys can move to get a rush out without an OLB? Ray Drew? Tyson?

If Big John and Kwame are who we hope they are, then the pressure is very likely going to come up Boise’s gut (hopefully full-time) which should allow some discriminating use of edge rushing. I would think (that is, if Jenkins is Fairly is Mt. Cody) that our ends will be assigned a containment role (not that Moore is outside the pocket a lot – but Garcia certainly is).

Of course, I could be completely wrong.

Senator- Glad you brought this up. When reading it earlier today, it struck me. Think we can sneak a 3rd “6” on there?

I am very happy Big John chose UGA, and expect great things out of him, but many UGA fans are overlooking Kwame, imo. He looked much improved and athletic in the Spring Game. Having two monsters is exciting come goal line time, and will contribute to having someone healthy to rotate.

Competition is a wonderful thing. I expect both Big John and Kwame to have great seasons.

I do also. If they both stay healthy/fresh, our linebackers should be freed up to disrupt offenses all season. This position alone could be the game changer for our defense. Lord knows we need a smothering D again.
