Happy talk line of the day

Hey, the Dawgnation’s fretted over every negative third-party-removed observation about Isaiah Crowell that’s hit the Internet since his arrival in Athens, so it seems only fair to mention this:

DE DeAngelo Tyson said Isaiah Crowell so quick and shifty that nobody got a good shot on him today.

Quick and shifty – what a concept.

I like the part about Chase Vasser being an actor and a model. That’ll help us beat Florida.

Positive words about Crowell? By the end of the day, the Dawgvent will have this twisted around to how IC is afraid of contact and is running away from getting hit.

Also, let me just give an internet pat on the back to Branden Smith. I’m on record as being annoyed by the #1 situation possibly keeping him from being on the field at the same time as Crowell, but in this piece today he actually comes out and says that he’s willing to change jerseys if the coaches decide that they need them both on the field at the same time. Branden Smith, I was already excited about what I’ve been reading about the physical, aggressive way you’ve been playing in this preseason. Now I’m even more excited about the leadership you’re showing. That’s how a DGD acts, and I’m pumped to yell for you when you and your defense take the field.

to paraphrase Walter Johnson, you can’t hit what you can’t catch.

and +1 to GoDawgs for his observation on how the Panic-ocracy on the DawgVent will construe this as meaning IC is afraid of contact.

True, the negativity group ran me from there years ago. Like Steve a lot but the haters dominated all discussions. Became a group you were ridiculed for being a part of. Their reputation was really bad among Dawg fans. They had some really good posters but the antis made it unpleasant.

I’ve been in self-imposed exile from the Dawgvent ever since the end of last season. I went back for one day to try to get news on Caleb King when the rumor was swirling about him being ineligible, and I quickly remembered why I’d left. I didn’t even bother going over there the day after the Liberty Bowl. I think it’s fine if you’ve got a negative view of the program, but it’s all about how you express it. Hell, I have a bit of skepticism and pessimism about things myself. I think that a lot of those guys over there just get off on being miserable, though, and making others miserable as well. That’s not my bag. I don’t expect to go back until the next time Georgia is 5-0.

Heck I bet IC is running outside … think about it … It’s the 1’s vs 2’s so Big John Jenkins is lining up on David Andrews at the nose. There’s really no place for him to run but outside!

Just to keep everything in perspective…it is our D that he is running against. It’s not like our D has been able to stop ANYONE over the past few (few = 4 years) years.

Correction, the defense was fine after the Tenn. game in 2007. It was downright awful in Knoxville.

However, no one could stop Marcus Howard after that game. I bet Colt Brennan still has nightmares.

I hardly think it’s fair to draw any serious conclusions from 2010, as it was the first season with a new defensive scheme, new coordinator, new position coaches, etc. And the year before that, we had the 3rd best rush defense in the SEC.

Sometimes, being a skeptic makes you sound smart. Sometimes, it just makes you sound like an ass.

I should add, related to the new scheme in 2010: As was widely recognized and commented-upon last year, we didn’t have anything like the right kind of personnel for a 3-4 last season, especially up on the line. It may correct to say that we sucked against the run last season, but that doesn’t make it fair. Not in this case.

Maybe we should all just shut the hell up about the defense until we see what Grantham can do with the right pieces in place (for the most part).

Regardless of the DC, this team has been void of any type of defensive presence recently. Hearing that IC is running circles around this D comes as little shock. Who hasn’t? The proof will come Sept 3rd.

Does 2009 not count as “recently”? If 2010 does indeed deserve to have something of an asterisk next to it (in terms of the conclusions we draw from it about our defense), then 2009 is the most recent season on record from which we can reasonably draw conclusions about “defensive presence.” And in 2009, we gave up 3.42 ypc, and 126.15 ypg on the ground. Good enough for the 3rd best rush defense in the best conference in college football.

So either 2009 does not count as “recent” to you, or a team has to have the 1st- or 2nd-ranked rush defense in the SEC in order to count as having a “defensive presence” against the rush. Either way, it doesn’t sound like you’re thinking clearly.

The bottom line is that, whatever defense Crowell is up against in practice these days, it’s unlike anything this fanbase has seen to date — significantly different personnel, much more experience with the scheme, coming off a revamped S&C program, etc. So while you may be right to suggest that we shouldn’t get too excited about Crowell just yet, you’re clearly wrong to base that opinion upon anything from the past.

So by giving up 30+ point in 5 games in 09, you qualify that as a defensive presence? 2009 was the final nail in Ole Willie’s coffin. Nice year to pull from. I am certain that you were sad to see Willie depart that year. Simply put, this program has been sorely lacking on the defensive side of the ball for multiple seasons now. CWM is gone due to subpar D’s. In his first season, CTG failed to impress. 2010 = 5 games of 30+ points or more yet again. Will CTG improve this D? I hope so, but I have not seen anything yet that says he will.

Hey, man! What part of DeAngelo-forced-to-playing-nose didn’t you get? Of course you haven’t seen anything because we haven’t played a game yet. Your remarks will be taken as humor from here on in because you can’t possibly be serious. You are sticking your chin out to be stubborn about something you have already shown to be incorrect about. You are running me out of convoluted statements that no longer are intended humor.

Incorrect? Are you saying that we did have solid D’s over the past few yeas? That explains why Willie is still here and why the Dawgs lost more than they won last year. What about this is hard for you to understand?

Maybe you forgot that this entire discussion was prompted by an observation about Crowell’s performance against the defense in practice. That being the case, the most relevant defensive numbers are the rush defense statistics, and not scoring defense. Against the rush, in the most recent season from which we can reasonably draw any conclusions, yes, I think we had a “defensive presence.” I think having the 3rd-best rush defense in the SEC counts as having a “defensive presence” against the rush. You, apparently, do not.

Have we been great overall lately? Definitely not. But we’re not talking about total defense, or scoring defense, or passing defense. We’re talking specifically about a defense’s ability to stop a rusher — in this case, Crowell. Hence, “rush defense.” And in that particular area, yes, we’ve had a “defensive presence.” And yes, “recently.” Unless, again, 2009 doesn’t count as recent. I think it does. You, apparently, do not.

Now’s the time for you to stop. You’ve already made an ass of yourself. You’ve already demonstrated a thorough misunderstanding of when it is (and isn’t) reasonable to draw conclusions about a football team’s performance. So just take your pathetic whining somewhere else. Like I said before, it doesn’t make you sound smart. Quite the opposite, in fact. Or better yet, just put a cork in it until we have any idea where this program really is.

We actually have a very clear picture of where this program is: Try entering 3 of the last 5 bowl games (I know, the Liberty and Independence “Bowl” barely count) unranked. How about a combined record of 23-17 over that same 5 year span? Want a more clear picture? What about 13-11 over the past 3 years. Sure, give me the 10 year number. I know that is what you will point to. Guess what, in the next 15 years you will still be pointing to the exact same 10 year span. Under this current staff (read CMR), our program (and you are barely apart of that our due to your unwillingness to see the forest thru tree) has fallen to Donnan like levels. The difference, Donnan actually had quality SEC quality talent on a yearly basis. Someting CMR clearly (a 3 year span of 13-11 only backs this up) is not capable of doing. Until “fans” like yourself remove your head from the sand, we will continue to see this program slide. How’s that for a clear picutre? Need me to use crayon next time?

You can’t help but like Smith’s headlining practices. I have a feeling he is setting the tone for harsh play early and dragging others in just due to self defense. It is “striking the match” to this tenderbox of young football passion.

One way or another we should be happy with the Boise game. If the ball bounces funny it’s not as hard to stomach when they are playing “Lights Out”! If this group sustains this peak there is no doubt in my military mind how the season will turn out. GO DAWGS!!

I missed the news that Crowell was “running circles around the D.” Did read that “Nobody got a good shot at him.” How did it go from “no good shot” to “running circles”? ’tis a wee bit of difference in the interpretation.
Could the “running circles ” interpretation come from a vampire?

It is good see the Boise leaders mull changes to the river policy. They want more input in reducing the penalties for being caught jumping off a city bridge or for surfing on a boogie board tied to trees. By chance is that an issue in the Athens area?

Nah! I used to walk the sewage feed line pipe that crosses the Oconee. No rails nor safety cables. Carried a 4′ iron pipe that was lowered into the river at feed pipe center and performed research in situ. Right out of the military and in great shape and it never occurred to me to make a misstep. Today, I wouldn’t crawl out on that pipe on hand and knees without a safety chain.

Oh, and the research was worth it, winning SE and national honors for UGA. Published in the basic textbook used natl in my field of endeavor. Also published in the basic textbook in France and Canada with credit given to UGA next to the micrographs. Although I worked at Richard B. Russell Water Research Lab, the support by our University is what made it all possible. Thus my undying love for our great UGA.

No one’s going to mess with these kid’s pleasure time and you can’t babysit them. They have full control of their bodies and our personal cautiousness should never loom over them. Not now, not this year. Let’er rip, Dawgs.
