Are you smarter than a Michigan athletic director?

Brian Cook takes Dave Brandon’s utterly inexplicable decision to schedule another game with Appalachian State as an opportunity to ponder what kind of mind is charged with running Michigan’s football program.

Read it, and be grateful for Greg McGarity.

What am I missing here? Seems like the AD scheduled App State again in order to give Michigan a chance to at least take some steps toward righting a terrible, terrible wrong. Obviously, no one’s ever going to forget when App State beat Michigan, but if Michigan puts a crazed, big bully beating on App State in their next go-around, that first game will look a bit more like a fluke.

If Coastal Carolina beats us this year, I will immediately want a re-match, and won’t be satisfied until (a) we have one, and (b) we destroy them. I’d want to make that team, those coaches, etc., actually regret beating us the first time.

Sure, it’s a bit of a gamble. God help Michigan if the next game is even close. But you can’t fault an AD for expressing confidence in the program, the new coaching staff, etc.

This is what I was thinking, too.

And a beating of epic proportions is likely given normal I-AA vs. I-A matchups, assuming Hoke is any kind of coach at all.

No. As Holly Anderson said, it’s a revenge game-against Appalachian State. Just the concept deepens the humiliation of the first loss, no matter what happens in second game.

I don’t think it’s a revenge game at all. Nor do I think there’s any need to see it that way. If my younger brother ever beat me in a game of H.O.R.S.E., we’d play again immediately. And not so I could exact revenge, but rather, so I could set the universe back in order.

If Michigan adopted some sort of policy to never play App State again, I’d see that as a sign of fear, and therefore weakness. Made all the more pathetic by the fact that it’s App State. This has to happen.

I second Turd. This is still my school is better than your school. If Michigan has the anger and the stones to want payback and lay it on the line, I give ’em a pat on the back.

That App State win against Michigan was a fluke. If they played each other 99 more times, Michigan would win every game.

But that was some epic shadenfreude. I could only imagine being an Ohio State or Michigan State fan after that game.

The closest parallel I can recall witnessing was the loss to Vandy at homecoming a few years back

That would be 2006. However, Vanderbilt is a D-IA team and SEC member that has beaten the Dawgs before (examples: 1994 and 1991) once in a while over an extended period. App State is a D-IAA team with a win against Michigan in its only attempt. Much, much worse than Vandy beating UGA. If Michigan totally stomps App State in a rematch that would expose the original win for what it was-a fluke-and tarnish what may be one of the greatest achievements in the history of App State football. If I were the App State AD I would turn the game down or, at minimum, make the Wolverines come to Boone for the rematch.

Or go back and kick Big Blue’s balls one more time. No matter what happens, I’ll bet they rerun the Michigan fans’s antics of pulling their Big M over their faces and trying to look away from the field over and over before the second game and who in hell would want that?

Guess Michigan blue this one, eh.

Can’t believe you guys! You can’t undo shit in life! Who could possibly get any satisfaction out of Goliath bashin David? Ok, I’ll give you crazed Hittonites, but is that how we would identify ? No return game or Republican advertising could defray the shame, as it would only exascerbate the pain of never being able to undo it.

UCF is not on the scale of Appalachian St., but I can feel your embarrassment from that game. Replaying it won’t unlock the deep thud in the stomach we all have. Give them their due. Michigan should do the same and give Appalachian St their blue. They earned it.

Make that Hitites. Only used it because Phillistines comes out like Phillistinos and didn’t want you to get any Tagalog hate notes.
