Friend of the blog Bryant Denny has the same reaction to the one-game penalty imposed by the NCAA on the Miami players caught up in the Nevin Shapiro scandal that I have.

What a load of crap.

    I think you’re reading that article wrong. The players were not all suspended for one game. Rather, various players were suspended for up to 6 games based on the value of the improper benefits they received. This is how the NCAA does it – higher dollar improper benefits result in longer suspensions. If AJ had sold his jersey for less money, he would have been suspended for fewer games.

    Why do I feel like we got screwed again? Did the NCAA send out their apology letters yet to Da U or Da Ohio State?
    I guess I should be thankful we didn’t get the NCAA hammer for those drivers license violations. Or that middle name thing.
    Lesson, never sue the NCAA and win.

      Yep. Turns out to be around $250/game. For $3000/player, you can get the death penalty. Anyone want to drop approx half a mil on a team you want gone?

    Like how CBS Miami in the article refers to strip clubs the players went to as “gentlemen’s clubs.” As if everyone there is sitting around in smoking jackets talking about their squash game. Hey CBS Miami, it’s not 1965 anymore. You can say “strip club.”

    This is just another example of the NCAA expediting a finding so that ESPN will not lose one of it’s money teams. ESPN love them some U. ESPN is running college football and it’s the NCAA’s job to make sure the WWL’s favorite teams are not hurt too bad. Notice how OSU is not going to be hit with lack of institutional control since obviously “The Vest” was not an employee of OSU but a mere independent contractor. Nortre Dames negligence costs the life of a video student but get the old fast play from ESPN because we know a lot of people love ND even when they have sucked for years. The flagship of playing fast with the rules USC gets the hammer but is allowed to load up with recruits while they appeal so the next couple of years won’t hurt too bad. They signed 30+ players this year.

    The institutional punishment of the U itself is yet to come. This is just the direct ruling regarding the particular players who received benefits that can be reasonably monetized (black or gray market transactions–hos and abortions–can’t really be estimated for something like this, can they? Maybe so, what do I know). For those benefits, the individual players have to sit out, and the NCAA is trying to be quicker about ruling on things like that. As we saw a few weeks ago regarding Jarvis Jones. Nobody expects da U to stop playing football of its own accord, right? If they get “death penaltied”, or something not quite that bad, that will come later. In the meantime, particular players need to have their amateur status restored/adjusted/whatever’d.

    OK. The players’ suspensions vary depending on the value of what they received. Worst offender got six games. True, in contrast, A.J. Green didn’t do anything illegal. However, it don’t look good for the NCAA; they’d better come down hard on the school. With that lovely bowling alley photo, It’ll be hard for smiling Donna to deny institutional knowledge.

    Every time I hear the name Nevin Shapiro it reminds me of Navin Johnson. What a delectably nerdy name for a guy buying favor with athletes.

    From the perspective of the NCAA the thousand dollars that A.J. got for his jersey was THEIR money.

    The NCAA behaves exactly like a street pimp. If one they ho’s gets in trouble or gets arrested and she a good ho, then she get bailed out. But NCAA will whoop a bitch ass if she F wit his money.
