I didn’t catch this at the game last night, thank Gawd:
Sophomore inside linebacker Alec Ogletree left the game in the second quarter with a right foot injury. Ogletree moved to the position after starting four games at safety as a freshman in 2010 and was expected to be a leading contributor this season.
The absence left the Bulldogs short on depth, with walk-on senior Jeremy Sulek receiving most of the snaps to fill in…
It’s obvious now why the coaches felt comfortable about moving Richard Samuel back to offense where his presence (seven carries for twelve yards) was so clearly needed.

Didn’t understand moving Samuel then, still don’t understand it now. I guess at the time they kinda had their eggs in one basket with Turene for ILB depth, and by the time they found out he wasn’t coming, it was too late to switch Samuel back. But yeah, Harton or Malcome could easily have contributed as much as Samuel did last night.

maybe Samuel is blocked as easy as he goes down while running? wouldn’t be very effective if he gets knocked down on D. Love his willingness to help the team but not certain he would be an answer at LB.

Also, Kenarious Gates left in the second quarter. Twenty minutes into the season, we already had to play a guy we wanted to redshirt.

Per Rivals Boise signed 100 players from 2007 through 2011. We signed 112.

It would be interesting to see many of the players we signed were not even recruited by other division one schools.
Boise State had limited scholarships due to probation. They only burned one scholarship on a walk-on this year.
We burned eight scholarships on walk-ons this year.

Actually, while I agree with you that rewarding a walk-on for his effort is a noble thing, isn’t it better to give a scholarship to someone who is an outstanding player to attract him to come to your school and play? I mean, isn’t that the entire purpose of athletic scholarships in the first place? When you don’t use up all your scholarships recruiting players of first rate ability and have 8 left over, what does that say about your recruiting? Just askin.’

Walk on Connor Norman got some plays at safety. If you watch those touchdown throws, our safeties were so out of position.
At least we have players closer (5 yards instead of 10 yards like last year)….right?

A walk-on with a scholly, no less. What did you see that his walk-on status as a full team member had to do with his play? As an individual, did he play badly? If you have data, then present it if you want anyone to see things the way that you do. Otherwise, being a walkon is no different than recruiting numbers of lesser players in order to stock up and weed out. Perhaps this walk-on had weeded someone out.

I thought Richt said he knew what he was doing. I think he is so full of himself that he doesn’t know how full of shit he really is. To move a player from a position of weakness to a position where the player was ineffective, only to leave a WALK-ON as the top reserve shows you have no idea what the hell you are doing. NO. IDEA.

No one here is saying that walk-ons are worse people, but by definition they aren’t players who were worthy of a scholarship. I’m not down on them at all, but we really should, as a huge flagship state institution, have more than enough depth at every position to never be in a position where we’re FORCED to play one. If a walkon earns a roll, fine. But, when it’s the middle of a game and some guy gets thrown in the fire, you don’t expect him to play as well as someone who was heavily recruited.

With the jerseys we wore, it was hard to read the numbers from our seats, but I swore we had another #1 on the kickoff team.

That’s pretty old news. It has been delved into by Richt, no less. Both players have said that they would give up the number if they are required to be on the field at the same time. There is no “right number” for a single player. Where have you been while this number business occupied the media for over two weeks? Outsiders have tried to start team dissention over this tempest in a teapot . Looks like they are trying again. Ho hum.

It was easy to tell Smith and Crowell apart. Crowell was the one whose helmet kept coming off, while Smith is the one whose shoes came off, right? Well, it looks like it falls upon me (someone who was not a Richt supporter before) to state the obvious. Don’t you guys think you are going a little overboard here? The sky is not falling. What really happened last night at the Dome? The Dawgs got beat by 2 tds by the #5 team in the country and Boise actually may be better than that–the Broncs may be the best team in the country. Bottom line–that’s all that happened. The Vegas bookmakers, a pretty dispassionate bunch, had Boise as the favorite in the game. If UGA won it would have been an upset. The likelihood was all along that UGA was going to lose this game. Now that it happened GET OVER IT. Did you all think that miraculously all things wrong with the team would be fixed? It took about 3 years of sliding to get to where the team is now so logically it will take some time to get back. UGA signed a really good class last year and with another good class of recruits this year will have the nucleus to build from to get back to the top. We still do not really know how good or bad the team is and won’t until the USCe game. The reality is that the Dawgs could also lose next week but still have a decent season. We need to circle the wagons and support this team. That’s what the team needs, not petty backbiting and fingerpointing.

Boise was good last night. They execute very well.
But I’ve seen lots of top five teams in person. If that team is truly a top five team, I weep for the strength of college football this season. A 2009 Florida or 2003 LSU (or early 2000s UGA, for that matter) would have ended that game before halftime last night.

Really, that same 2009 UF team that would’ve lost to Arky except for the SEC refs and the same 2003 LSU team that lost to a Zook coached UF team at home and nearly lost to Ole Miss. So, you are saying that Boise last night is not nearly as good as 2009 Arky, 2003 UF, or 2003 Ole Miss.
Wow. You saw a different team in white than I did. They may not be top 3 or top 5, but they are alot better than some of the teams the teams you referenced lost to and/or struggled with.
07 UGA, the number 2 team that year, would have taken a beating playing them early in the year.

They execute very well because Moore is the QB, legitimate Heisman trophy material with the inability to run it would seem and he has the quickest release I’ve ever seen. Add to it the disappointment we have for our players not playing to the standards we have witnessed before and you have a “bad” game for us. Who are we to argue whether Boise is ranked correctly? Hell, we could have played the #1 team in the country last night. We will find out later, but if you aren’t sportsman enough to congratulate the team that beat our ass, don’t watch the game. I held out hope of defeating them until their first score dampened it considerably, not because they scored, but because our D didn’t look like anything that we had been prepared for. Their 2nd and 3rd tds clinched it. No one could tackle and wrap up.YAC and YAT yards drowned my enthusiasm and hope as if waiting for someone to disappear over Niagra Falls.
The next game will be different in that I won’t be holding onto any silly D expectations until I see them. Geathers and Jenkins moving the line-get the fuck out of here. This D had best be told by their coach to play heroically like their lives and careers depend upon it. Oh! They do?

I support the players, just not the staff. Although disappointed, I thought we played some good, close winnable games last year — until the bowl. The bowl was pathetic. Yesterday was more of the same. I can understand not being jacked up to play the bargain basement bowl, but to come out so flat in the kickoff game?
These kids are just not being given the tools to compete. It’s just sad and a waste of their talent.

Like hell! They have demonstrated in other games that they do have the tools , but didn’t play even to the lower level you claimed for last year. Part of that is due to a great team they played last night. Another part is square on their heads for underperforming whether from nervousness or stepping on their dicks. That was not the courageous Murray we saw at Auburn last year. That goes for other team members as well . They should be called out, not the coaches failing in giving them “tools”. Think the coaches trained them to fall down on the first play together with two motion penalties? Get outta here with the “coaches giving tools” crap. Blame them all as a unit, not singly. Our scrimmages didn’t show such problems did they?

Seriously, they’re a very good team and they looked like it. And a lot of our opponents for later games weren’t looking much better against lesser opponents.

Good post. I noticed all the new posters as well. Good perspective in comparing first games of the season. We knew that some would come on here, no matter what. Expect more after next game, not because they will be right, its only that they go by the W/L score. And their agenda has and always will be targeting our coaches a la Ron Zook( and the sorry fair-weather fans at FU) because they are also interlopers hoping that we don’t get it all together before we play their sorry asses.
As a fan, I’m angry at Granthem , but in a constuctive way for him to know that we support anything he and other coaches want to do with some of these players to help them help themselves in becoming all that they aspire to be. Don’t tell us how good they are, make them show us how good they are. In all fairness as well, some media has pushed expectations beyond reality

The best thing about that game. $1.7 million for the Dawgs. That way we can keep paying this coaching staff for the same level of play we have seen for the past 2-3 years. Let’s see, we are 14-13. Now what is the pay level for the Boise staff and their record the past 2-3 years?
We are what we are because a HC can not get a full roster of players [ poor position recruits mainly on the line]; suspensions,and injuries [even though the HC put in a new S&C and nutrionist]; and not understanding how the high school game and college game has changed in the past 5 years re offense.
I have come to the conclusion this staff has to go. Bobo and staff should have gone at the end of 2009. Otherwise expect the same frustration and disappointment.

Oh, and by the way, our special teams suck ass. Our wall never blocks anyone on the kickoff return, and our punt coverage men do not break down to make the tackle.
It’s not going to get better this season, guys. There is a thin line between supporting the program, and allowing the cancer to continue to fester. If next week goes like I think it will, it will not be out of the question to go ahead and make the move next Monday.
I suspect that once the new coach is in place he is going to find so much behind-the-scenes buffoonery that we will be shocked if we ever hear about it. We are being run like a Jr. varsity high school program right now. The players deserve a helluva lot better than the leadership that they are currently being given. I encourage everyone to stop donating money until Richt is fired.

Whom, exactly, do you want to run the team for the rest of the season if Richt gets canned after next week? Bobo? Grantham? Some other assistant? Let’s be adults about this, wait ’til the end of the season and make a solid evaluation. Then we decide what to do going forward. I am not a Richt apologist. I just don’t want to do more damage to the program.

There is another Dream Team already living in Athens: Ray Goff, Jim Donnan, Joe T. 2, Old John Kasay, Vince Dooley and Ray Lamb could probably cobble together the same 4 or 5 wins we are looking at now. Maybe Herschel could lend some time as well.
May make for some awkward dinner conversations when Vince’s niece, her husband and their 37 children visit and Mike has to talk about not being able to find a job.

That is not a queston to be answered by fans. We know what this team has become. We all saw they same preformance last night. And it was not good, nor did it show signs of improvement from last season. I do not know what this staff worked on over the offseason, but it clearly was not the O-line nor the D-line. Maybe they all just eat less Burger King and more fruit. We also know that CMR will not be fired mid-season. Bobo, maybe. Grantham? Probably not due to his high salary.

There was one thing that excited me last night, and that was the thought that Chris Petersen (and hopefully his entire staff) might be willing to relocate to Athens next year. His staff clearly outthought and outcoached Coach Richt and his staff at every point and in every way. Can you imagine what Petersen’s staff would do with our talent?

Peterson has already turned down UT in ’09 and Stanford in ’10. Doubt he’d leave to come to Athens unless he sees the tremendous talent he’d have to work with and the departure of Moore playing a factor.

Some coaches need a little seasoning (Cleveland had Belichick before he became a future hall of famer with NE). BVG is a proven top DC. I’d at least consider, maybe interview, top football coaches before crossing them off the list. I wouldn’t fault McGarity for turning over every rock to get the best guy.

Just as an aside to the contrarians who come in her complaining about people overreacting to a loss, I want to point out that losing was by far the least of my concerns. What I cannot stand is the fact that once again our team looked underprepared, ill equipped, and uninterested. In short, we appeared poorly coached on national TV, yet again. How many more Dream Teams does coach Richt have in him? If we keep looking like that in big games, he won’t sign another.

I agree aside from the uninterested part. The team seem plenty interested. They just didn’t play well on defense in the second half and on offense period. I’ve defended Bobo here quite a few times, but his gameplan was baffling to me, assuming he had one.
