The “Whoremasters” article is a great read. We are near a breaking point, I think. And I’m not sure what’s going to happen next. Can you imagine if college football players were treated like free agents? You’d get emails every day from the Athletic Association-“If everyone send us just $5 more each, we can get the next Herschel Walker here at UGA!! Click here to donate!!” Or would Title IX make us pay the best softball player the same amount as the QB?
Couldn’t we just triple the stipend across the board and be done with it? If you can’t afford to do it, you can’t, but set a ceiling and make it reasonable. Adjust for inflation or something. Then give the players all the NCAA revenue from selling those old game clips they’re talking about in the article.

I believe when it comes down to it, the people in charge will choose academics over athletics. I’m not saying they will leave bags of cash on the table. However, these people know the slippery slope that will emerge if they condone compensation for athletes.

One … sack. Granted, it’s only been two games, and against quality opponents, but I still can’t get over how small a difference the addition of two huge NTs has made to our pass rush.

Exactly. And wouldn’t it be great if those numbers were higher AGAINST the higher quality opponents instead of possibly padding them against CC this wkend? Sigh…

I think the sacks will come. Boise gave up 9 sacks in 2010. They’re really, really good at short passes, which take away sack opportunities.
South Carolina also used short passes (5.5 yards per pass), along with a mobile QB and we still got a sack and a few pressures.

Problem is, a 3-4 def is designed to create more sacks b/c the QB and Offensive line isn’t supposed to know where the extra defender(s) will be coming from… Maybe the issue lies w/ facing experienced QB’s so far, but it looks more likely like the Coach and or Personnel aren’t up to the challenge.

It’s not a question of scheme, it’s a question of timing. If it takes you 2 seconds to run to the QB, unimpeded, but the QB will throw the ball after 1 second, then it doesn’t matter whether you were blocked or not. You’re not getting a sack.

The Big 12 needs to take a deep breath and not panic. I wrote a post (a bit tongue-in-cheek) yesterday about how Baylor’s Ken Starr could save himself and his school by putting together a coalition of the old SWC schools. I don’t really think Starr can do that but the remaining Big 12 teams acting together through their Commissioner might be able to do just that. If Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State left the conference that would leave Kansas, K-State, Missouri, Baylor, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Baylor in the Big 12. Even if Mizzou went to the SEC there would still be 6 teams left. Add all the teams from Western Division of C-USA, reshuffle the sides a little and you would have a pretty attractive conference. Keep the name the same and the Big 12 still may be able to keep its TV contract and BCS affiliation both of which are very valuable commodities. I predict that if such a scenario came to pass that TCU (and possibly others–maybe BYU) would be clamoring to get in.

In the BSU game when they went to the bunch formation and threw the short passes Grantham went to more of a prevent defense. He usually rushed only three or four. I understand his tactics, force short passes, keep everything in front of you and stop the run. Then you hope they make a mistake. They didn’t. I do not like a prevent D. Against USCe it was more important to at least slow down their running game. I don’t think anybody stops that guy when he’s healthy. You have to stay at home in that situation. So I am not reday to pass judgement on UGA’s pass rush, or lack there of, yet.

The Gator writing about FInley says that players don’t get suspended for traffic violations. Hell, they don’t get suspended for discharging automatic weapons in nightclub parking lots down there do they? I believe Caleb King missed two games last year for his failure to pay a speeding ticket (and maybe a suspended license issue) maybe because he was, like HI McDonough, a habitual violator. But, I’ll agree with the Gator writer, Finley won’t miss any game time.
